My favourite book of 2023 was Dune. Nothing was close, it wiped the competition. I'll go so far to say that it is one of my favourite books of all time, it's just that good!

Okay, since we're citing our rules up front, my top reads of the year *does* include multiple books by the same author, and does include a complete trilogy. Seriously, The Edan Trilogy is a HUGE standout on a list I actually don't enumerate, either. I guess if I had to choose one, Return to Edan was my top for the year--by far the most powerful emotional punch of anything I read in 2023. I see I'm not alone, which is wonderful. Nice list. Happy New Year, my friend!

Wow, what an absolutely fantastic reading year you’ve had, Philip! You’ve covered a variety of styles even just within the fantasy genre, which I think it very interesting.
You’ve been singing Mark Lawrence’s praises too much for me to not add him to my TBR. I’ve got to get to some of his works.
And it sounds like being a judge for SPFBO was rewarding experience for you as well!
Can’t wait to continue on in Malazan and Realm of the Elderlings. Hope you have as amazing of a year in 2024 as it seems you did in 2023!

Great selection! Tempted by Wolfe as I’m interested in linguistics and the Sapir-Whorf theory, and that Beowulf translation (have never read it before).
As for me, lots of great reads this year even though it has been a trying one. My favourites have been Guns of the Dawn by Tchaikovsky, Dune, Lady Trent series by Brennan, Farseer (starting Liveship in Jan), Stoner, How Do You Live? by Yoshino, Busman’s Honeymoon by Dorothy L Sayers (read all her Peter Wimsey books this year), and The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord. Looking forward to more in 2024.

I also loved "The Book That Wouldn't Burn". 2023 was the year of Ken Liu and M. L. Wang, the Queen of Standalones, for me. "The Dandelion Dynasty" and "Blood Over Bright Haven" were my highlights of the year. One of my childhood dreams became true in 2023 with "The Adventures if Amina al-Sirafi". I fell in love with reading thanks to "1001 Arabian Nights" at the age of 8 and always wanted to see a female version of Simbad the Sailor.

I didn’t read much in 2023 due to busy work schedule. But my favourite reads were Thrawn Trilogy (Canon, not Legends) and Thrawn Ascendancy Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. I had already known Thrawn when I watched Star Wars Rebels. Though the show portrayed him as a villain, the books have portrayed him more as an anti hero. What I really liked about Thrawn was how carefully he studies every situation and how he is always one step ahead of his opponents. The books have portrayed him as a great leader who brings the best out of his people. Also the world building is amazing in both the trilogies.

I'm so glad to see Fool's Assassin as your favorite Realm of the Elderlings book that you read this year! It edged out Ship of Destiny for me when I read it last year, and I didn't think Hobb would be able to top it until I read Assassin's Fate, which happens to be my favorite book that I read in 2023! Assassin's Fate held the number one spot since I read it in January, amidst stiff competition (Don Quixote nearly toppled it!).
Other than Assassin's Fate, some of my other favorite fiction reads of the year (using your criteria of one book per author and no re-reads) were, in no particular order:
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes
House of Open Wounds by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Sacraments for the Unfit by Sarah Tolmie
Evil for Evil (the second book in the Engineer trilogy) by K. J. Parker
The Forest of Enchantments by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
The Veiled Throne (the third book in the Dandelion Dynasty series) by Ken Liu
The White Rose (the third book in the Chronicles of the Black Company/Books of the North) by Glen Cook
The Dreamthief's Daughter (the ninth book in the Elric novels) by Michael Moorcock
A Brightness Long Ago by Guy Gavriel Kay
Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology
Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez

The Red Pony by John Steinbeck

Thank you so much for the kind mention, I’m so pleased that A Gamble Of Gods left you with a lasting impression. I’m actually reading Murder At Spindle Manor at the moment (only just started and about 10% in), but I’m enjoying the writing a lot. I also read Jade War and Jade Legacy this year and I feel the same way as you did. Jade Legacy was a fantastic conclusion to the series, but Jade War felt slightly stronger for me, too. It’s one of my favourite trilogies now, regardless. I’m very excited for Fonda Lee’s upcoming collaboration with Bruce Lee’s daughter (The Guardian Of The Scroll duology.)
I was, of course, delighted to see The Book That Wouldn’t Burn there, too. It’s such a mind-blowing trilogy. Amongst other things, such as the intriguing and sometimes heart-breaking inclusion of powerful themes, high-stakes plot, wonderful imagination, and trademark prose, it happens to feature my favourite fantasy couple. Surprisingly both of them are side characters, and if I remember correctly their romance kicks off in the second book. I'll be curious to see the reviews once they start rolling in next year. Looks like a great year, Philip! We have no overlap, as we didn’t really read any of the same stuff this year haha.
My favorites were Ishiguro’s ‘Never Let Me Go,’ Dick’s ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,’ and Clarke’s ‘Piranesi.’ And also one nonfiction called ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.’
I don’t think you read much nonfiction outside of your profession, but I highly recommend ‘Sapiens’ for you. Part of it details what’s deemed the Cognitive Revolution: around 70,000 years ago humans gained the ability to abstract, and we subsequently developed myths and stories. This is THE thing that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom: myths allowed us to work in enormous numbers, leading to our “conquering” of the world. I really think you’d enjoy it, Philip!
Happy reading-and since you reply to all comments, apologies for this one being so long!

Glad to see you enjoyed The Fall of Babel. It didn't work for me and I gave it a 3 stars, but overall it's still my 2nd favourite fantasy series of all time because I just love those first 3 books and the world Bancroft created -- so I'm happy you enjoyed the series!
I also had a fantastic reading year in 2023, my top 5 would be:
    1. Ship of Magic. I put it above Destiny because I was so pulled into the story right from the beginning, no one does it like Hobb when it comes to make you connect with new characters. And the politics in Bingtown, chef's kiss.
    2. Thunderhead. Absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend you read the Scythe series, I'm sure you'll love it.
    3. Storm of Swords, a reread, but I have to put it in the top 5 nonetheless, the only reason it's not n°1 is because I already knew the big moments were coming.
    4. The Grace of Kings. I wasn't sure about this one initially because it is incredibly fast paced, but by the end of the book I was so invested with the characters and this fantastic world.
    5. Theft of Swords. Same reasoning as with Ship of Magic, Heir of Novron is amazing, but Sullivan created an incredible world in book 1, very immersive, and a love letter to Tolkien. I'm not sure if you've read Riyria, but highly recommend if you haven't.
Other honorable mentions: Dune Messiah, The Tyrant's Law, Black Prism and Wisdom of Crowds.

Wow Philip, what a fantastic year you've had! 😍 I just looked it up again, and my local library finally has The Book That Wouldn't Burn! I really want to pick it up soon, but have so many books set in Ancient Greece (or about that time period) I need to get to for a writing project close to my heart. Ah the dilemma! Other authors you mentioned on my list: Janny Wurts (I read 2/3 books in the Riftwar saga this year and really enjoyed them for the most part - I recently bought Curse of a Miswraith!), Josiah Bancroft (none of my libraries have his books so I'll buy them when I can, but as a fan of Alice in Wonderland, I'm so intrigued!), Gene Wolfe (my libraries only have French translations which, from what I've heard, must have been a wild ride to translate 🤯) and now you've encouraged me to add pretty much all the self-pub works you mentioned, especially Murder at Spindle Manor (I'm a huge fan of Agatha Christie) and Drowning Kingdom (love The Iliad & The Odyssey, though I've yet to read The Aeneid). 👌

That’s a respectable and mighty list! Glad that New Sun made the cut. I agree it’s not an especially emotionally-oriented read. One thing I like about Wolfe (and also Faulkner and a couple other modernists) is how they are good examples of how intellectual engagement is a viable way of reading. I think that I get so used to the rewards of emotional engagement that I forget there are other legitimate reading methods, even if that’s something we probably don’t want too often :)
I’ve had a bit of a fallow year in terms of reading. Some of my favorites were non-fiction, which similarly happened when some friends were in the final stages of their dissertations. But for fiction, I just finished Midnight’s Children by Rushdie, which was maybe more intellectually engaging than emotional, but ultimately impressive. Lord of Light was a standout! I’m halfway through Once and Future King and it may be my favorite fiction read of the year!
But 2024 looks promising, with Urth of the New Sun and Book of the Long Sun; Tender (Sofia Samatar’s short story collection); likely some Le Guin; gonna read some GGK and Declare by Tim Powers; and I’m finally gonna bloody read Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, something I’ve deferred several years in a row.

    • @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy
      @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Midnight's Children is an excellent example of an intellectually engaging read -- lots of brain cells get a workout from that one! The humor is great too, but I also did not find it to be an emotional read. Nothing wrong with that! My very best to you for that dissertation, Paul -- I can't wait to hear when you've successfully defended it!

    • @paulwilliams6913
      @paulwilliams6913 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I was split on the humor in Midnight's Children. I'm all for overly dramatic narrators and the games of perspective and time slippage and such. But I honestly think body humor is just plain stupid, and clearly Rushdie thinks that so long as you find a way to make it dramatic it can work, and so that's just a matter of taste. But yeah, overall a remarkable text.
Thanks for the good vibes on the dissertation. I hope to submit to the committee--and maybe even defend--before ICFA. We'll see.

My favorite read this year was A Master of Djinn. (And the short story prequel, A Dead Djinn in Cairo.)
Early jazz age alternate-history Cairo with a bit of steampunk and a lot of Arabic, Egyptian, and North African culture, magic, and religion. A main character who is a woman detective that dresses like an English dandy. A murder mystery. An other-dimensional threat.
In lesser hands, all of these elements would be a mess, but P. Djèlí Clark makes it an engaging, fast-paced romp that fits together beautifully.

Such fantastic reads this year: I found "The Last Unicorn" to be wistful, witty, and a new favorite to read many many times over.
"The Adventures of Pinocchio" was layered in much more wisdom then I had expected, and if a little random, it was never neglectful about his arc.
"The Lies of Locke Lamora" was such unwholesome fun, reinventing the Robin Hood esq. heroes into the best of characters and setting.
"A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness is a healing, ugly, real, guiding light to the bereaved, and not at all long.
"The Invention of Hugo Cabret" and "Wonderstruck" by Brian Selznick creates what I think is an entire new book medium, and it's thematic messages, in both cases, are perfectly suited for the art. _Perfect_ books for hesitant intermediate readers.
"Dr. Sleep" by Stephen King didn't hit me as hard as the Shining, but it's the perfect sequel the more I think about it. Thankfully King wasn't trying to match or repeat what the Shining does but rather makes the perfect companion piece, for a different sage of life, a counterpoint for those wanting a more hopeful exploration of addiction.
Oh, and there's those Edan books - from that poster, I'm guessing your a fan :) - book one was a really good read & world introduction, and book two was "transcendent", while also wonderfully/horribly draconian and a compelling love story on a few fronts. I couldn't fit in book three this year I'm afraid, I had Halloween and Christmas books to get to, but it'll be the first book of 2024.

Also enjoyable were literary works like "The Dead" by James Joyce (from the story collection 'Dubliners.') and the only fiction written by Rainer Maria Rilke (The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge)

As much as I would like to read TBTWB and High Mage, I might wait for more of the series to come out. The curse if having an extensive TBR which includes Return of Edan. Not everyone can put out three books in a year...
For favorite book would probably have to choose a Bakker. Warior Prophet or Judging Eye.

It was great that you got into manga, there are some stunning stories there! Regarding Janny Wurts, I got one of her standalones in audiobook for next year, because Wars... is not available as audiobook, unfortunately!

My Top Favorite Read of 2023, is a tie between «Under Heaven» by Guy Gavriel Kay & «The Veiled Throne» («Dandelion Dynasty #3) by Ken Liu: «Under Heaven» should be teached next to «War & Peace» and «Le Miserables» for GGK’s prose and Ken Liu’s Character Work has few if any rivals! A character that has only one scene in «TVT» (though a series veteran in «The Dandelion Dynasty»), earned with that scene alone my favorite character of 2023: Cogo Yelu!
Next is another tie between «The Retreat to Avalon» by Sean Poage & «The Winter King» by Bernard Cornwell: Poage has written my favorite take on «A Historical King Arthur» and the Seige of Yves Trebon/St. Michel in «TWK» shows why Cornwell might be the best at writing battles!
    The next are unsorted:
«The Way of Edan» by Philip Chase (You might have heard about him! 😄)
    «Bold Ascension» by Vaughn Roycroft
«The Winter Road» by Adrian Selby
    «Salammbo» by Gustave Flaubert
«The Farthest Shore» by Ursula K. Le Guin
«The Name of the Wind» by Patrick Rothfuss
    «Brigantia» by Adrian Goldsworthy
    «Tortilla Flat» by John Steinbeck
«The Little Emperors» by Alfred Duggan
    My Honorable Mentions
