    I was so close on pulling the trigger here. I love the look of this guitar. The only thing that stopped me is that I already have 3 LPs and my wife was gonna kill me if I bought another guitar. Great review man. Very in depth.

      Do what I do, tell the Mrs you've been looking at B and C stocks for months and found a great deal on a return so you got it for dirt cheap. I can't eat solid food since my oral surgery, and I don't give her attitude for buying expensive delivery, so, our little system works, I get the guitars I want, she eats the food she likes and my little white lies keeps a fight from starting. I'm not talking about a 5K Gibson mind you, but 2-6 hundreds bucks a year pales in comparison to what the delivery drivers get (we're both good tippers), so screw them all! I suspect she knows, but we both don't talk about it, her parents are still alive at 93 y/o and live below our apartment and her children are grown living monsters, so we don't sweat the small stuff. I'd tell her the truth, but she doesn't want to hear it, so much other garbage to cope with, we let each other indulge. Keep it in perspective I guess, you don't have to fib if you don't want to. But find a common ground. On those rare occasions when you have to reveal the truth, if for no other reason than you want to, just bring up a senseless purchase she "needed" but not argumentatively. I'm going to buy a stone for my late daughter when I sell an old car, my plan is for the stone and 2 to 3 Harley Benton's, an CST-24T Ocean Flame, an HB-35 CH Vintage Series and just maybe an DC-Custom Cherry (though I have numerous examples of that body style, including a Gibson, but I''d like one I can strip down to do a Cherry Sunburst on that's made better than the crap version of the Epi VE, the Cherry Sunburst on a good one isn't available without selling a kidney these days)

      Tell her the only other option is for you to kill her and string her bones up like a guitar to play for her family. That worked for me. Haven't seen my wife since though. 🤔

    I have a lutist friend so I dont have problems with spend a lot of money in upgrades(lucky me),Im planning to buy this guitar for fun and modify it in this way:
    -Di marzio 500k pots,rewring in 50's style with orange drop capacitors.
    -Prs Mark Tremonti Signature PU
    -Tone Pros bridge system
    -Remove 80% of gloss (I hate shiny guitars xD)
    Cant wait to see the results ;)

    Hey Cory! Thanks for making these videos. Your explanations and demos were a big part of why I picked one up originally. A few mods later and I have 3 more on the way. So thank you for sharing your knowledge. Also whatever you're playing at around the 32 minute mark is absolutely sublime! That needs to be a song! Cheers!

    • @jaroroytapel

      Yeah but the money you give on the upgrade you could of just invented in a better known and more reliable Brand.

    • @CoryMura
      @CoryMura  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are right with the upgrades... some people would be better with getting an epiphone directly with no need to upgrade.
      but some people are very satisfied with their stock HBs

    • @MobileDecay
      @MobileDecay 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jarek Roitapfel But if you have a very specific sound you want and would inevitably upgrade it would be cheaper to buy this guitar and upgrade it as opposed to upgrading a epiphone.

    I use those Marvel strap locks on my HB35+. They're the lowest profile ones that I could find for a guitar with the strap button position on the back. They don't rattle when the weight of the guitar is on them... ;^)
    I have those Wilkinson pickups on two guitars now, my HB35+ and my DC-Custom Cherry. I like the sound better when the pickups are lowered a bit and the the pole pieces raised. Brighter, livelier sounding.

  • @Twirlyhead
    @Twirlyhead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is likely that the body of the vintage black is not of quite such nice wood as the ocean flame (or the other transparent schemes for that matter). As the head of HB told Cory in an interview, the all black finish can/does hide less select cuts of wood.

    I bought a sc-custom ocean flame a couple weeks ago and noticed right out of the box wearing marks and some stains on the back of the guitar, reached out to Thomann and got a: for the price tag You should expect this "cosmetic issues" answer. I think I´ll get BS answers unless I become a TH-camr. Still the guitar sounds great, the customer services needs to do better.

    Beautiful guitar. But big problem for LP style guitars as always crooked tuners 1:20 . I don't understand, is it so difficult to install it accurate? Also you can see this problem on original Gibson Les Paul guitars.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Our Job Maybe they are trying for the authentic look? < tongue in cheek>
      I just received a current HB SC Custom in a different colour from a recent production batch (ordered June 2018), and in an otherwise truly flawless finish, the tuners are all *very slightly* misaligned, though none individually so obviously as the example seen in this vid. Viewing the headstock from the front, it's not readily apparent at a glance - but you will know. : )
      Mine was Made in Vietnam, and they now come supplied with Roswell pickups and coil split. No manual included, so given double humbuckers, unsure if coil split is wired bridge or neck only or both given a single tone knob. Its "Roseacer" fretboard finish is almost as smooth as my Rosewoods, any visible 'cracks' truly minuscule.

    How does it compare to the SC Custom Vintage Black? Without the maple top, my Custom VB sounds very dark. And is a very heavy guitar. I am guessing this one is brighter and must have more mids compared to the VB?

  • @Watzline
    @Watzline 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will believe it when I have one in my hand, which I ordered a HB and is taking a LONG time getting here. I am beginning to think, well they look nice, but will need to upgrade, which defeats the purpose of a low cost guitar or return, because you certainly could not resale. Cory still enjoy your videos.

    • @TheBsavage
      @TheBsavage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you want to upgrade? The machine heads are awesome. The P/Us sound pretty good & are hot enough, plus they have built-in coil split, so I think that'd be a waste. The hard-tail bridge is fine. IMO, the only thing that needs upgrading are the strings, which are completely awful. No, this is a good guitar stock. Change strings, done.

    Hallo Cory! Good, good review as always! You're great! Please, give me an advice. I'm gonna to buy (late this year) HB 35+ for clean and less driven sound and an LP style Harley Benton guitar for more hi-gain sound (mostly for oldschool hardrock and classic Heavy Metal like Judas Priest). But I can't decide which one I have to buy: SC550, SC-Custom Black or this one Ocean Flame? I really like the design of this ocean flame, but issues you enumerated here stop me from getting it. What do you recommend? Thank you!

You have really sold me on these guitars with well detailed, honest, entertaining vlogs, im going to take the plunge but im mulling over the SC custom lemon drop or the sc 550 afd, the custom looks nicer but the pups on the afd sound great from what ive heard in demos. Tuners are awesome. Way TOO nice for the money. PIckups are really good. There are hotter, but they're still pretty hot. They sound good & have built-in coil split. I don't like the single-coils, though. They're okay, but they don't really add much IMO. Overall experience with the guitar is very pleasant. Beautiful to behold, plays well, except mine needs a warranty replacement because both volume pots are bad. Experience with Thomann has been mixed so far. I'm in U.S. The folks are nice enough,, but 1st there was issue with payment, then they told me something wrong on shipping, they eventually came through for me, but it took some bargaining. Ordered 2 things at the same time. Both shipped at the same time, one got here in a week, one took almost 4. They aren't open on Sundays, nor late, so expect communication delays.

I guess the nuts are made of a compound (graphite + resin ?) but seeing the color of the nuts of your picture maybe there's only few % of graphite inside ? I understand they can't be 100% graphite as it is very fragile. Here is a presentation of different nut material. The graphite type is dark : www.frudua.com/guitar_nut_material.htm. The question is : do some sellers pretend their nut are made of graphite but they are 99% plastic ??

      dont overthink this topic. even Frudua did not mention that a graphite nut has to be black. there is also artificial graphite.

    You Said in another that you have no money for Gibson, but if you didn't buy 3 bentons you can have a Gibson studio so please learn to save money...

      Cory Mura I see a lot of other reviewers say the same thing about the Gibson studios. Was there anything in particular that you didn't like about them?

      its just an overpriced old design. i mean even this cheap Harley Benton got a volute and wont break as easy as a $$$$ Gibson.
      the biggest plus point on a gibson is the aesthetics and the studio doesnt even have that. no neck and body Binding and no nice top. for around 1000Euro thats a pretty bad choice.
      I am a luthier and i had 2 studios here with twisted necks also for repair and the one i had here without a twisted neck had a bad fretjob and bad slotted nut. soundwise they are pretty okay
