That's actually a traditional saying in a slight variation. But in internal kung fu styles, the idea is to move to a position where you can't be reached, not necessarily to get out of there. It's about sharp reflexes, instincts and quick movement to avoid being hit. Miyagi is a cartoonish film sensei sometimes speaking traditional wisdom as if it's a cliche.
