    Beautiful. You can harvest the amaranth seed heads too, to cook and eat. Preferably before the seeds harden, but since the seeds are edible, it works at any time.

      Use a nail clipper to pinch the hard shell of the non pointy side of the seed. They will germinate easily.

    I looked for ivy gourd seeds online and the pictures showed a red variety. Is this the color yours turn when mature, or is this a different fruit/variety? I also live very near Orange County and could purchase locally, if they are available. Do you have a suggestion for sourcing the seeds?
    Thank you for your excellent videos. You have a lovely garden.

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ivy gourd propagation from seeds doesn't yield fruits. I do have plants around spring and summer (propagated vegitatively) which fruit the same year. Next availability is spring 2023. Send me a message to connect and pickup this and other plants from Irvine

    My tomatoes barely came in and it seems year after year the aphids and spider mites get worse. My Swiss chard and kale were covered in aphids. Do you treat your vegetable plants for aphids and / or cabbage worms daily?

    • @CaliforniaGardening
      @CaliforniaGardening  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes aphids are a problem. I generally don't spray anything, just hose them down with water, but insecticidal soap and neem oil work well for aphid control

      plant calendula as a “host” plant

    • @valleychatter2195
      @valleychatter2195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might need to plant something else for the aphids to feast on. They will leave your food alone in that case. Aphids also attract ants so watch out for them as well. I saw some video using boric acid and sugar paste to kill the ants.

    How much is your monthly water bill?

    • @Arcanhael
      @Arcanhael 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly 1/2 to 2/3 cheaper than what you would pay if you grew grass. I pay about $275 for almost 1/2 acre of grass, flower and various fruit tree beds and a big orchard of exotic tropical fruit trees. I am planning to transform my backyard into an urban farm. I am tired of paying high water bill and get nothing out of it.
