This is amazing, this system can be used for such a wide variety of things Just imagine finding a blueprint for a hot air balloon in a dungeon or building a functioning portcullis gate Heck, horse/elk drawn carts are gonna be OP for long distance hauling
Developers mentioned somewhere that they want to move away from minecraft-ish 3x3 grid crafting, I wonder if they meant completely or it was specifically about boat construction.
I suspect there will be multiple in game crafting methods, so will use this building system, others may be more pixel based games like pottery, smithing.
My understanding is that the dev doesn't even like the concept of an inventory or even the concept of storage grids, but for gameplay reasons it makes sense to keep it implemented until he develops a system that works _better_ What I have actually heard straight from the dev's mouth was that the crafting grid "is" a place holder, as in it's useful for quickly adding ways to craft things in the game now and worry about how to make it into a _better_ mechanic later. The problem with a lot of the things crafted in the grid (especially early game) is that a "weaving" mechanic for your first baskets turns a simple one click craft into a couple of in game hours of work. (I'm deliberately making it an extreme example) the problem is such changes modify the balance of the game thus kind of keeping us "stuck" with the grid for now. Much like how the dev was interested in making the sailing mechanic a bit more of a simulation, which was not about caring as much about wind speed (as implied in the video) but more importantly making the wind direction a factor, with basic halyard and sheet lines to control the sail, but finding a balance of usability and realism and balance is a tough line to walk.
Fun fact: you pilot from the right hand seat because that’s the starboard side. The starboard is actually the “steer board side” but the word was changed throughout English history. For some reason sailors only docked on the non steering side so that’s port board side. Idk why, I just row as a sport so I just know all the nautical directions lol
The boats are a pretty neat novelty right now. There's not many big bodies of water, so it seems like they would mostly serve to be a neat role-playing feature right now.
here are my ideas for the anchor (note have not played this game but will be taking a look) the anchor would do two things one it would anchor the ship allowing you to stand on it and do things in the middle of the ocean like net fishing if that would be implemented two it would drop a rope to the bottom of the ocean (if your rope is long enough) this if combined with a proper dark ocean (not sure how dark it is now), resources like clams only showing up at the bottom of the ocean and sea monsters would make the anchor crucial for knowing where you are when you can only se like 5-10 blocks
Would be fun to customize the boat even more by choosing specific colored wood for each construction step. I hope Tyron removes the restriction to use the same wood type for all step and implements boats to have different colored sections ... eventually. 🙂
so i have my world gens very exagerated landcover is 60% landform scale as 400% landform something as 300% upheaveal rate 0% and these setting make a really wonderful world and am very satisfied what setting are you using?
The only option is to buy Vintage Story as it requires a active login to the game servers to run, so even having the installer would not help without a license. The pruchase price is very reasonable given the amount of hour you will get out of the game - www.vintagestory.at/store/category/1-game-account-game-servers
I like it and i don't. I do like it's something, and customizable. However, we are going from basic shoddy raft, to full on viking ship. Where's canoes, where's kayaks? Skiffs? Once again , Devs went from low end, to high end, with no middle ground. Then we also again have a fixed sail boat , not a custom build ship. Its a predefined ship, you can somewhat customize. Thats not the same thing. It isn't like world gen really supports mass travel across generated oceans by default. And also even tweaking settings it's impossible to have a true to form islands and archipelagos that'd be significantly akin to say Norse lands, or even Bahamas/Caribbean . As how it seems to generate ocean world islands, is just to have elevation mountain tops, sticking out of water to act as islands. yeah, it's nice to have and great strides in the right direction , but there's just so much that surrounds the concept of larger vessel travel across large bodies of water, that just aren't there or supportive of it either. So in my eyes, it's nice, just ... not as nice as I hoped, currently.
I agree that more small boats are needed like a canoe, but you can change the terrain gen to make boas a viable prospect. We have found that 70% waer cover, with a 160% landform scale works very well and forms island and larger continents.

Yep I can see a whole load of structures and devices getting this treatment. Tents.campsites, wagons, canoes all are in the offing now :)

they meant it as constructing directly on the overworld and replacing recipes with minigames such as the pottery one

I keep forgetting this game exists, I really need to try it sometime.
It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Download it asap.
Its actually not a good idea for its extremely addictive
It is a great game and I have hundreds of hour of play out of that initial 18 euro investment.
This is one of three games I regularly play.
51 year old gamer here. I’ve played nearly every console/PC game ever, and this is my favorite so far.
Fish swims across the bottom of the sailboat. Cid’s quiet astonishment: “Oh, hallo.” (me: at least it wasn’t a shark, Cid.😉)
It;s only polite ;)
The boats are a pretty neat novelty right now. There's not many big bodies of water, so it seems like they would mostly serve to be a neat role-playing feature right now.
If you change the terrain gen to be 70% water (earth like), and the landform to %160 you will get oceans big enough to sail for days :)

U should take a look! It's a fun game.
This stuff is great. I'm very intrigued at what kind of stuff these systems will allow modders to do in the future.
14:00 The fish ! xD
Just cos he is a fish, is not reason not to be polite ;)

It is possible that may happen, but this step is a significant step in the right direction :)
That would be cool but might require a lot of calculating power.
Ctrl right click to put stuff in the boat. Just like placing a water source from a Bucket
I always fudge my CTRL or Shift key requirement ;)
This game is my family now.
so i have my world gens very exagerated
landcover is 60%
landform scale as 400%
landform something as 300%
upheaveal rate 0%
and these setting make a really wonderful world and am very satisfied
what setting are you using?
For this I can't remember, on the server we use 70% , and 160% for landform.
Me with my landcover at 30% before they actually added an actual ocean and boats.

Oooooh me plumbs!
Starboard is "steering board".. so yeh you steer from the right.
Ah you can tell I am not a nautical person :)
I hope I cant get from 'wood to diamond' in 15 mins like the other game by using a boat and sunken loot/treasures in oceans et al..
absolutely not in this game hahaha
From wooden handle to diamond necklace in 15 minutes ey?
Diamonds aren't tools in VS
Considering how much linen this takes, you need several hours just to make the boat 🤣
@@titaniumvulpes yep, its a journey, I make sure to plant every flax and plant i find as soon as possible.
a shame you can't stand in it.
Gente alguém me ajuda a ter esse jogo, eu não consigo baixar, eu queria muito um link Mediafire 😢😭😭😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
