  • Tired of church fights and divisions? Tired of the lack of platforms that promote church unity? Well, this podcast is for you. Pastor Haig shares the vision and mission for the Christ and Coffee Podcast by sharing key passages of Scripture on church unity as well as his own personal testimony of growing up in three very different church traditions.

Haig, I agree with the broad strokes of everything you say. And I too am upset by empty divisions.
But I have a point of pushback. Of course, there are essentials and non-essentials. But there is a temptation to minimize the number of essentials in order to maintain unity. The councils of the church define the dogma (essentials), but these councils only arose when the lack of clarity on essentials prompted the possibility of division in the first place. Dogma is a double edged sword in that way.
And even in non-essentials, there is an interval in which disagreement must exist without causing further division. The use of icons might be deemed a non-essential to call another a Christian. I agree. Christians are not commanded to use images to venerate Christ or the Saints. But an iconoclast might actually be accusing other Christians of committing the sin of idolatry. So you can say the use of icons is non-essential but the opinions must remain within certain extremities to be stable.
    Let's catch up soon.
Disclaimer: Since we last talked I got chrismated in the Eastern Orthodox Church. So that might clarify my attitude and commitments.
