This is SO helpful! After years of being told what to to and how to do it (aka working 😅) I really struggled at first to "just be creative" and "just put stuff together". Videos like this can be exactly what is needed to overcome this feeling of being overwhelmed. Thank you!!!

I’m retiring in a year from full time work & after raising 4 kids, volunteer work schooling & paid work (not necessarily at the same time) I’m ready to do what I want so I get the “being told what to do & how to do it” 😂. My creativity has always been a important part of my life but junque journals etc. are a new thing for me. I make “junque journal” birthday & holiday cards & this video has really given me ideas on different ways to do it…just want the time to be able to do it for hours on end!

For beginners, your video gives a starting point, which is often an intimidating stumbling block. You video is almost guarantees a piece the person can be happy with, & is just the boost for creativity to happen. Not everyone starts out being able to 'go with the flow', & the confidence building exercise you've given is perfect!!

Thank you for these guidelines which will help me. As a rebuttal to the "messy time consuming comment", I find doing these (mine so far are about 3" big) to be really artistic and creative albeit a tiny frustrating at times. But then I think we all start with a certain "teacher" and copy until we evolve on our own or find another teacher and change how we do things. I wonder if your education or previous career had anything to do with diplomacy, therapy, counseling. May I say that one of the lovely things about you is this: you don't say "should, must, have to" and if you say like here (was it?) "you need to..." then immediately you said "i don't mean you Need To, but it just works better..." I've been watching more videos from other scrapbook people and appreciate your calm demeanor, organization and notes! You may not know this, but you are unique in the world of DIY scrapbooking.

This was one of the BEST tutorials that anyone has ever done! I too felt colleges were messy and confusing. And not everyone who does them, do them well. Some look like a 5 year old pasted everything that was in the trash basket with no purpose and they put so much stuff on it that many items were covered up. There was no theme, too many colors and patterns, just a mess. So I ne we even tried. Now with your tutorial, I’m confident that I can make some nice colleges. Thanks Natasha for this amazing formula.

This was a great video and so helpful! I will definitely use this formula. I can see using it in my scrapbooks too. Here's a tip be for that pretty paper that's hard to rip. If you use a wet paintbrush and draw a line with clean water where you want your edge, you can then just pull it apart along that line. It leaves a beautiful feathery edge on both pieces.

Natasha’s ideas are wonderful and right on! I would probably add that the best way to do collage is without too much thinking and scrutiny. Honestly, the faster you move, grab and place, the better your collage will come out. Often people’s downfall with collage is wrestling with each piece and attempting to match too much. The freer you get, the better your collage will turn out :)

I'm actually using collaging as a theraputic journey to decrease my overthinking. I take some time and some consideration and then I put it away and go back to it knowing I did my best sand I'm almost always very pleasant with it. If my piece needs a little bit here/there I do it. Then it's ready to share. I don't take as long wallowing in self criticism as I did prior to my experiences with instructions and guidance from a master. It's been beautiful. 💝

I love to collage; it's very relaxing to collage a page. I have each page a theme---maybe a color, or a bird, or an ethnic page, or a thought such as wishes, dreams, prayers. Collage is very rewarding as a sort of self-therapy or just a quiet time. Sometimes I play music, and sometimes I listen to audio books. I encourage everyone to try a few pages.

Years ago in photog class, we were assigned to use a whole roll of film on any subject we wanted. Outside, inside, anywhere and anything. We returned the next day, developed our 8x10’s, picked our favorite one and displayed on the blackboard. Our teacher walked back and forth, back and forth. It was quite clear he was thinking about something. Then he said, “These pictures are all different BUT there is one thing in common in each photo.” No one could figure it out. It was quite the puzzle to us. And the answer was….
We all centered our subjects in the pictures. Every single one of us. It sure taught us a big lesson that day. Your beautiful video today explained it so well. You don’t need to put everything smack dab in the middle😁👍 I learn so much from you. Thank you, I can’t wait to give this a try!

The comment you mentioned about someone saying collage is messy and unnecessary has nothing better to do than be critical just to be critical...collage is a hobby. All hobbies do not appeal to everyone. So if you don't like it, don't do it. Find something you like and pursue it!!! We don't have to be critical, condescending, or just plain rude if our interests don't aligned with someone else's. That being said, I love that you have a formula!!! It helps us to get a starting point!!! I love the written plans you have as a base for your projects. Once we have the basics you are providing, we can flourish with our own projects!!! I think it suits certain personality types, for those who don't like perfect and even, but eclectic and uneven balance. My most favorite collage artist/author is Eric Carle. Super fun…collage is so flexible & versatile to anyone’s personal artistic tastes. Some of mine look better than others & that’s ok. It’s a process that can’t be forced. I thought it was remarkable that someone would bother to message you to say that collage is messy and such a waste of time!! My first thought to that comment is, "then don't collage--do something else". In other words, not everyone likes blue, so if you hate blue, then use green or purple. We all need to work in a way that feels good to us. I can't imagine writing to a quilter and saying it's too time consuming or too messy. Thank you! This is helpful. It's annoying someone said that about collage. The same thing could be said for ANY art. Just because it doesn't move or inspire that person doesn't mean it won't inspire others. Not only that, but for the person doing it, it is fun and expressive for them and others opinions don't really matter. Not everyone wants to do fine art and sell their work. Some of us are busy but want to create, and collage is attainable for us as opposed to fine art drawing or painting.

Some people have a knack for it. Some people struggle. And it shows. But it is the most forgiving art, I think. Very nice tutorial.

Using a formula is so much more useful than that willy-nilly collage so many seem so fond of. This is collaging with a PURPOSE and is so much more than just gluing bits of random paper to paper to get rid of scraps (which I loathe with the white-hot passion of a thousand suns). Thank you for your usual thoughtfulness and an artistic eye toward everything.

Since my husband died, I have really struggled getting back to my art room. I didn't realize how closely connected it was to his music playing.
I love all the paper arts and have a room full! I have spent much time going through supplies, sorting and reorganizing.
Thank you for this quick guide to get me jump started! Love your beautiful accent ; ) I do like the rounded corners, as it softens the look! I also use the photo corners ; )
There will always be naysayers, so ignore them. A thumb down counts equally as a thumb up in TH-cam land! ; )

I like the way you teach, whether it be collage or whatever you want to share. Don't be too concerned about the snarky people, because in reality - no matter how well you do something - there will always, always be someone who will complain. The way I look at viewing videos, if I don't like something, for whatever reason, I just stop video and go onto something else, no reason at all to be snarky or rude, none whatsoever. God bless you young lady. Becky B

You mentioned that the glue lumps show the lumpiness through the paper when placed down. I have been shown to either use your finger or a brush and spread the glue out it takes the lumps and bumps and smooths them out. But as you said, that gives it some life. Happy crafting!😊

I thought the little angel collage was my favorite, but as bits are added and completed it is the little bird that seemed so lonely that turned out to be my favorite. In the end I thought each collage had really nice outcomes. The washy tapes are gorgeous. Natasha; thanks for a more simplified way. I am glad this was the video I chose tonight. Quote: "See possibilities everywhere". The quote is for the lady who thinks collaging is messy and a waste of time.

These are gorgeous productions. Their beauty lies in their classic simplicity. Your presentation is done so well. Why, in this planet, in our global community, would ANYONE watch a video on collage techniques to leave such an asinine remark about ....wasted time and effort? What a pitiful life. Junk journal creations is an analogy of my life - taking bits and pieces, and scraps, and turning them into a work of art. I could NEVER found this expression of this beauty without the sharing of such skillful artists such as yourself on TH-cam. Y'all have increased the quality of my life in such an inspirational way during this Pandemic isolation/ quarantine era....God has blessed me with your collective presence presents...And if I ever HIT THE Money lottery.....I've already hit the heart/spiritual lottery and I am quite serious in regards to my affection for the people like you on TH-cam who I invite into my home quite often. Please take care of yourself and those you love.

You can call it a process instead of a formula. All of them are lovely, even the ones you don't like as much. Here's a suggestion for when something is too dark - use a white pen or marker or whatever you have to outline or highlight that object or area. Now that you have a process for collaging, you can be brave - try slanting the images and papers. Diagonals help to move the eye. As my friends tell me to encourage me - You got this! You are amazing!
Your work is wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing.

its my task to create layouts and make cards out of their paintings.
as they need to look good to sell them, i created lots of them in my style.
and now, after watching some of your videos, im SOOOO inspired! im lying on my couch and want to go to work tomorrow to start creating and preparing. omg 😍

This is so helpful and your collages all turned out beautifully. I don’t understand why somebody would make a negative comment about collage. After all if you really don’t enjoy doing it then just don’t bother but many people do like it and it is a very freeing way to express creativity. If you enjoy the process then it is not a waste of time. I find it helps me understand pattern and colour in my other craft projects such as knitting and patchwork.

I work with an autistic teenager and we do art about once a month. When I take paint, a few folders of colors of papers, glue, and a folder of focal points, he really enjoys painting his background and choosing his pieces of paper & a focal point and creating something of his own creation. I don't think collage is a waste of time at all. Creativity is enjoyment in itself, just like listening to music is enjoyable. It doesn't have to be anything more.

Everything looks so easy when I watch other crafters collage together their ephemera, etc. But, when I sit down to do it, I feel rather lost. I appreciate you sharing your struggle to find something that worked for you because it now works for me. Thanks! Also, I might say, collaging is not new to me. It is my favorite art form. However, it is done in a free form creative process that is totally different than the collaging done here in a page for a junk journal, done for a specific purpose and with limitations. You were very helpful for this. Thank you.

I've had a lot of success in my collages. They don't look anything like these; these collages are really beautiful. But what I've created in the passed has turned out VERY well considering there's no planning like you've demonstrated; I almost literally just cut stuff out and stick it down and hope (with a surprising amount of success tbh) it turns out balanced. I'm will most definitely be thinking about this layering formula next time I have my pages and glue out. This video was helpful!

I entirely understand the need for a formula, it's why I find it very difficult to do these kinds of artwork, to collage. I keep thinking there must be a way to do it but I never know how. So I just dont create anything despite having the supplies. I dont know if it has to do with being both artistic and logical at the same time, wanting to create but wanting what I create to make sense. This "formula" that you've provided helps so much in getting started with the basics of collage and mixed media, it feels less stressful and for me it feels like someone's holding my hand and giving me the courage to start creating! Thanks so so much, this exactly the inspiration I needed!❤❤❤
