People are friendly, they fly American flags on the freeway overpasses (not homeless tents like LA), no graffiti, lots of open spaces, minimal crime, and a live and let live attitude.
I lived behind enemy lines for 53 years, having loved Southern California (Southern Los Angeles) growing up. Retiring to Northern Idaho has been the best thing I have done for my soul. If you live in town, the Winter is pretty easy. If you live on acreage in the forest, you will definitely need a tractor to maintain your property. However, I only had to plow four times last Winter so Winters have been pretty mild the last four years I have been here.

I visited Coeur D'Alene two weeks ago. I've been there at least a half dozen times now. I'm shocked how built up the surrounding communities are getting. But there's still a lot of open space. There's also a ton of great tasting food there. I love that park you shot your video from. Great memories with friends visiting and spending time there. The dam was finally flowing two weeks ago. When I was there in early November it was barely a trickle, but then again it was only 29 degrees that day. I recommended a friend look into that area for retirement and let him know there's a lot of properties with room for horses, which would be perfect for him.
Trent, You didn’t mention the retired military benefits in Idaho as well. About $60K of your income isn’t taxed for disabled vets and other benefits as well. Having lived in CA, CO, AL, FL, NE, AK I chose Idaho to retire to after driving through Sandpoint during a summer trip. We’ve lived in Hope for 7+ years and love it. Winter snow is beautiful if you don’t have to drive in it every day!
We have a modest house on 4 acres a mile inside the WA/ID state line and it works for us. We do our business in Idaho and save on gas and sales tax. We buy most of our food in WA since there is no tax on food. We really appreciate that there are no water issues here. The fact we have no state income tax keeps this as our primary residence as we have a pretty decent passive income. I recently read that Idaho is in the top 10 worst states for overall income taxes, so a move to Idaho will not be in the picture. We have a winter home in St. George, Utah, so we avoid the cold weather and get a nice change in scenery twice a year.
We also have a home in St. George, looking for a cooler area for summer months. Would you mind sharing which city/town on the border you chose? Thank you!

After living my whole life in Southern California, I retired to North Idaho seven years ago and even spent four years as a member of the City Council in the town where I settled. Most of what Trent says is spot on. Only thing that I take exception with is that I have found prices at the super market a bit more expensive. However, with everything else being much less, it is all good. I have to give a warning for those from the southern tier of the union who move here that even though I have not found the winters to be too bad, the length of the daylight hours in winter and the constant cloud cover in winter affected me greatly that first winter. The next summer, someone at church asked me if I took Vitamin D. "Huh? What's that?" They said, "Try it. You will see." And I did. Even though I still don't like the short days and constant cloud cover, at least the winters are tolerable now.

Not a retiree, but leaving the military and looking at moving there. Grew up in TN and TX, as conservative as they come except a little more anti-government than most in TX. I had a gas station owner and a cop (who was getting coffee there) tell me people like me are the reason they can't afford rent, Idaho is full, to tell everyone to stop coming here. On another note, Idaho sounds great, I have never lived in snow, I am worried about getting to work on time because of it.
ID taxes are lower than CA, but not that much lower for middle class folks. Where ID really pulls ahead is lower crime, fewer addicts, and red state politics.
North Idaho looks like a perfect place for a well-heeled retiree, who can travel south for the winter season, and can easily travel for better medical services whenever needed. You could easily fly down to Los Angeles for a day of appointments and be back by dinner, or take an easy night in Malibu to catch some waves before heading back the next day.
I’m closing in on retirement, and I'd love to move from Minnesota to a warmer climate, but home prices are ridiculous now, and mortgage price skyrocketing on a roll... do I wait for a crash, or go ahead and buy house anyways?
It’s important to remember that crashes almost never happen when people are predicting a crash is coming. Similar to a car crash, if you can see you’re going to crash you will make course corrections and avoid crashing. You may go in to a ditch but you can get out of that much easier than a collision. In order for prices to fall you need to have more supply than demand and we are millions of homes away from that right now. Sure, they can crush the economy so much that people can’t afford homes but that also means they probably can’t afford rent either so they really can’t do that unless they want to repeat the Great Depression. Hard to know what the future holds but I don’t know anyone that bought property when they could afford to buy property and regrets it 10 years later. Sure there were those that bought at the peak of 08 but even those that held on and either rented it out or lived in it made out okay. Short term gains, I wouldn’t gamble on that. I’m a young adult living in TX and am considering Idaho since there’s no public land here to shoot on and not enough parks. I’m quite conservative socially and I really like government work so does anyone know if Idaho’s government is well funded and a good public sector work place?
Conservatives typically don't like government and want as little of it as possible. That means that there isn't likely to be a lot of public sector jobs there and public sector jobs aren't held in high regard.
The public sector jobs in Idaho don’t pay as well as other states. I worked in public water sector (treatment plant operator, fresh water) where I came from I made six figures, In Idaho I made middle five figures. However, that is good money here…
So let me get this tax thing straight…. In Idaho there is (currently) a 5.8% state income tax, on retirees’ income too, I imagine. And on top of that there is a 6% state sales tax and local governments are able to tax up to an additional 3% on top of that?! So that brings me to Western Washington with its 9.2% sales tax, but at least here there is no income tax.
You’re missing some pretty big factors. Vehicle tabs are more expensive, property tax is significantly more expensive, and Washington now has a disability tax that comes out of your income, but they said it’s not an income tax so we know it’s definitely not that….
Okay. My ‘01 Silverado 2500HD tabs are $105 a year. How much (roughly) would annual registration be there? Property taxes for me in Kitsap County, on a single family home on a 5-acre parcel are $4871 annually on an appraised value of $572,760. My previous research of Idaho property taxes didn’t show much difference. Am I wrong? I’d be looking at a place between CdA and Sandpoint.
