Thanks for taking me fabric shopping. I’ve never been to LA or heard of a “fashion district” before this video. This is awesome, just like a dream! Thank you so much! 💕🌈✨ I’m excited to see what you make!! 🌺🐝
I remember watching Project Runway and I was always so fascinated by the fabric stores. Most fabrics stores I have been to have a lot curtain and interior fabrics but when it comes to fashion fabrics it's very little too choose from.
I love your channel April. This video was a short walk down memory lane. I went to Eagle Rock High School back in the 1980's. I also went to the fashion district to buy fabric for my prom dresses. I live in New Mexico now so I don't have access to all that yummy fabric but thanks for the blast from my past. I can't wait to see the bathing suits.
I love the fabric stores! I would spend $$$ if I had that option. I think the pineapple fabric and the cactus green fabric would look great as a color block bathing suit!
omg I'm contemplating flying to LA just to go fabric shopping 😱, I would just go crazy for all that $1 a yard fabric, april what have you done to meeeeeeee
Wow! I’m amazed you have an entire street of fabric stores on both sides. In our town we don’t have a real fabric store. We have craft stores that sell some fabrics. You live in a seamstress dream area with all them fabric stores. I like you fabric choices for your bathing suits. Looking forward to the swim suit tutorial. Thanks for sharing your shopping experience!
You are so inspiring! Your videos me a reason to finally bring my sewing machine away for repair (1h drive away) and now that I got it back, I sat down and finally fixed 3 shirts, a dress and a skirt that were waiting for me for over a year. You taught me to look at my old clothes in a different way, so there are a lot more projects coming up for me :D keep up the good work!
Looks like you had a great time choosing just the right fabrics. A reversible swimsuit sounds like a brilliant idea and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
please share specifically how to make a "strong" lining so nothing underneath shows or how to create a shelf bra kinda thing in a swimsuit, many thanksssss
bum7201 Joanns has a fabric called Casa Ember Collection Lining and it's 100% polyester fabric made specifically for lining. They have a gorgeous emerald green color that I highly recommend under sheer mint-colored fabrics or sheer light-colored fabrics! It's item #16062598 (they only have it in "Botanical Garden" which is the emerald green color). There is also the Casa Collection Solid Lining fabric which is also 100% polyester lining fabric and that line comes in more colors.
Yes! I love the start to finish (and everything in between) videos. They're really informative and for someone (me) who has no CLUE where to even start on a project, these really help. 😊 Can't wait to see the pinstripe and the cactus colored sites. They're my favorite!
I LOVE the lavendar and "cactus" green. I have a lot of it that is more towards teal. I would LOVE a reversible piece with those two colors. I am not a pink person usually, but the pineapple fabric is SOo cute too!
Love the fabric haul! It would be interesting to see the different notion stores you have. I find that’s where I get a lot of inspiration when I’m shopping in Queen Street West in Toronto.
I honestly keep rewatching this! I love fabric shopping ( I’ve done it online recently though). I started posting because of you! I love sewing and posted a sewing video 🥰🥰
Thank you for sharing!! Would love to see more fabric/notion places that you shop in downtown LA. The fashion district is a MUST for me whenever I'm in LA 😄
Okay this is like fabric heaven for me !! In mytown we only have two very small shops and for more I have to go to Amsterdam but even there are just a few fabric stores!! You are so blessed in the US with all your shops.
April I know you have made swimsuit before. Don t know what type of elastic you used before, but swimwear elastic makes the fit so much better. If you have never used it before try it you will love the difference.
I looooooove how you said "it's $10/yd but i got it for $9! $7/yd but i got it for $6" LOLOLLLL. Every dollar counts! Anyways, i'm so excited for your tutorial!
My cousins wedding is coming up and I’m struggling to find a dress that fits with the color that I want. Mostly since I’m plus sized. Watching your videos makes me want to just make a dress from scratch but I have no experience when it comes to sewing. I’ve been watching you since my college days and I love all the dresses you have made !
I love going there! I wish there was one closer to me here in Anaheim (or OC in general). But I'm super glad you posted this video today because this weekend I'm going to the Fashion District with my bf to find some fabric for a romper.
I recently find your channel and love your content! Not trying to be a downer with this comment, but it's the first thing I noticed when you sat down to show us your fabric finds...plastic bags! Maybe you could even do a reusable bag tutorial or something...?? Again, love your stuff!!
Cool video- I like seeing her you find ideas by looking through fabrics. I was wondering if shops like those you visited in LA are able to provide info about whether the fabrics are environmentally and ethically sourced? Maybe you could do a "green" transformation, using all deadbolt fabrics (those are waste materials from clothing companies that usually end up in landfills), and/or eco-friendly fabrics?
Super interesting to see what the LA Fashion District is like! I am also planning on making a swimsuit soon (yay!) but don't have that many fabric shop options locally so I purchased online 😊 My fav is the green stripes!🥰
Hi April. I love your Chanel for the amazing creativity. May I request 1 thing to you. M sure you go fabric shopping so often, could you please carry tour own fabric bag for purchase and avoid taking plastic bags from shops.
Man I wish we had more fabric shops where I live 😭 it’s so limited and the fabrics they sale aren’t even that great. And buying online ain’t great cause of shipping plus I want to be able to feel the fabric. Can’t wait to see what swimsuits you’ll make 😍
I'd definitely love to see more shopping videos, so I know where to go if any of those stores are international ❤️ and I can't wait for the tutorial video ❤️❤️❤️
Actually I don't think it was good advice for that salesman to tell people you can make a swimsuit out of almost any stretch fabric these days. Two very important factors to consider in buying swimsuit fabrics: will the fabric sag when it gets wet? And will the fabric become see-through when it gets wet? Unless the person is definitely putting in an opaque lining, (which not all swimsuits have), or is just going to lounge in the swimsuit, but not get wet or actually swim in it, those two factors are pretty important. It would be a shame to spend hours making a custom swimsuit and then not be able to swim in it because of choosing the wrong fabric. I always buy actual swimwear fabric.
Elle Zee I feel like a lot of people don’t even swim in their suits nowadays...I’ve seen many bikinis made from literally anything lol. But yes, if you do want to swim then don’t get like denim.......
Love the fabrics! haha i got excited when you pulled the pink pineapple out of the bag!! Though lining the light pinstripe fabric with white lining might be pretty see-through when wet hehe
I don’t know if you’ve heard of the TH-camr Micarah Tewers but as soon as you said some of the stores are strictly for upholstery I laughed because I thought about one of her older videos! She’s also very good at diying and sowing things! She came across an old couch one day and inspiration struck, she took all the fabric off it (she found in the trash on the side of the road) and cut it up and turned it into a dress! If you want a good laugh she’s great! It would be cool to see you two do a collaboration! 😊
your fashion district is AMAZING... makes me want to jump on a plane and come to the states just to go fabric shopping 😃 We only have two fabric store chains here, and they can get a bit exy...😐
I’d love to see a video of shopping overstock/salvage fabrics :) not many people think about that. It’s so much more eco friendly to source material that would have otherwise been wasted 🌱
If the stores would let you film it, it would be cool to see how you bargain with them to get a better price! 'Haggling' used to be a common practice between merchants and buyers back in 'ye olden days' but now it seems there aren't many places left in the U.S. where you can do that (except maybe yard sales and flea markets).
I think a solid orange would be a good lining for the pineapple fabric! And if you made the bottoms out of the purple the top could be reversible. So you could do orange and purple or pinapples and purple
Yess definitely more fabric/thrifting hauls, I had mentioned the reversible purple and pink pineapple fabric also lol. I know you said you were gonna use the pin stripped green as it’s own separate suit but what if you made it reversible with the pink pineapple fabric too? 🤷🏾♀️ and the purple with the white lining simple Ik but those first 4 could pair any which way. 🙂
Stay tuned to see what I create from these! Swimsuit tutorial next week!
coolirpa 😃😃 Awesome, I’m excited!
I'd use the pink pineapple fabric with the green 'cactus' fabric
coolirpa love the material, will you be able to tell me the street you bought the fabric:? thank you
coolirpa love it can't wait

OMG I'm do jealous, I wish there were fabric stores where I lived
Exactly what I was thinking! I can't imagine having all those fabric stores.

Ooh. Mix and match pieces! I like the idea of a little skirt for one piece. Even just a short wrap/tie on side asymetrical cover up skirt.
Yes I think it would Look even better that lavander one!!
Can't wait to see the final swimsuits!
I bought that same green striped fabric to make a summer dress
omg I'm contemplating flying to LA just to go fabric shopping 😱, I would just go crazy for all that $1 a yard fabric, april what have you done to meeeeeeee

Reversible? Oooh...

It was cool seeing all of the fabric all together and what you were drawn to.
I love the pink fabric with the pineapples. That reminds me of the tropics
Me too! That's my favorite one. And that green solid color is so pretty too!

Every time you mentioned the fashion district i was imagining a very different place. Full of people and noise. Not a ghost town.

Antique bathing suits used to be made from wool- can't get much saggier than that when wet!
@@slavetobloodcomic and no one wears them today because - progress - we have swimsuit fabric now.

Not to mention, holding up to chlorine and salt water!
But then, there’s no logic in fashion 😆
Thank you during this time of isolation.

Though lining the light pinstripe fabric with white lining might be pretty see-through when wet hehe
I really enjoyed this video. I would like to see more of this type of video.
Absolutely LOVE the pineapple fabric! 😍😍😍
I love you and your creations you're mostly my inspiration when I'm sewing😍

can you please list the stores you purchased at other than Michael Levine? Great Haul :)
I have fabric envy lol! In the town I live in, in the UK, there are no fabric stores! There used to be a big one but it closed 😥😥😥
Would you consider making the top green and the bottoms the pink/pineapple as it had green in the design??
it would be nice if you showed more of the decision making process in the store and what fabrics you liked but didn't end up buying
I’d love to see a video of shopping overstock/salvage fabrics :) not many people think about that. It’s so much more eco friendly to source material that would have otherwise been wasted 🌱
