I have struggled with OAS since I was a kid, but only figured it out now what it is. No one would ever take me serious when I said certain fruits made me itchy as a kid. They thought I just didn’t want to eat my fruits and veggies. I always had seasonal allergies as well. Fruits or some veggies would bother me sometimes and other times they didn’t so I started to think I was allergic to pesticides.. I recently had an anaphylactic attack, still unsure to what exactly it was, but the doctor diagnosed me with OAS. This is a very tricky situation.. because something I ate did almost kill me, if I didn’t get medical help when I did, I would have died. I have to carry an epipen now and I’m scared to eat. Found this video while looking for more information. I hope I can figure this all out and get to the bottom of this. It is sooo strange that we can be allergic to these healthy things that we’re meant to eat.

I have suffered from OAS since I was a child. My understanding is that it was not discovered until about the mid 1990's. I did not see any info on the web until about 10 years ago. A lot more information is out there now, but I find that few people have heard of it. It is great to have this video as a resource. Thank you for posting this!

This is great info. My oral allergy syndrome progressed into systemic symptoms in my mid 20s and I went through years of stress trying to figure out what it was. It seemed like everything I was eating caused rashes, flushing, and itchiness that lasted for days. I saw an allergist who said that it is rarely systemic and it was in my head. He told me to have someone else cook my food so I wouldn't know what was in it and to keep basically keep eating everything because it wasn't a real allergy. I actually believed him but low and behold the symptoms kept happening, I saw a dermatologist, a functional medicine doctor, etc. I tried cutting out gluten, dairy, low fodmaps, local honey lol, etc. Spent 1000's of dollars. No luck with any of that. 10 years later and I saw another allergist who diagnosed me with pollen food syndrome and said it can be systemic. I am now a year into allergy shots. I avoid my biggest triggers (nuts, seeds and soy), all fruit and avocados. I can tolerate symptoms from vegetables which aren't that bad. I miss the days of eating whatever I wanted but the worst part is not knowing what's wrong with you. I'm hoping the shots eventually help and I can incorporate more foods into my diet. 🤞

do you get reactions to everything with soy? like listed on packaged foods etc.
and with your rashes, are they just around your mouth? I get rashes, itchy and dry skin on my hands and scalp. I'm trying to figure out if this is cause from my birch pollen allergy or something else.
      thanks so much

@@jessstewart1556 Yes! Especially soy milk and soy sauce but I'll notice it if I eat something with small amounts of soy, like a protein bar. Also it will happen right away, even when I just have the food in my mouth I'll feel little pops on my skin. It does affect my mouth and throat but I feel the itchiness and rashes all over, and quantity does matter. So if I eat small amounts of these foods I won't notice much problem but if I start eating a handful of almonds everyday it would become unbearable. I'm not sure about your rashes. Are they limited to your hands and scalp? Is it just when you eat soy? Have you been to an allergist or other MD? I think if you're only reacting to soy, you might just be allergic to that in particular. It's not common to have systemic reactions to birch pollen, but if you have consistent symptoms that pop up in correlation to those particular foods it could be possible.

@@katieg7679 Thanks fr such a quick response! I'm still trying to figure it all out. I get instant reaction to soy sauce (tingling lips, tiny little bubbles inside my lips, lips swell which then turns into really dry cracked lips for days) but soy milk I don't seem to react to. Small amount of almonds okay, handfuls I'll get reactions to. Can't eat raw apples as same reaction as soy sauce. Carrots seem to be okay but then the other week I had a reaction almost instantly. I seem to get reactions to other foods on the list too. It's an extremely frustrating journey and I'm keen to find answers. I plan to go to an allergist when I move back to the city (living in a very small town at the moment, so trying to find as much information as I can at the moment.)
      Thanks again for your reply!!

This is great. I was recently diagnoised with OAS via birch allergy. Just a heads up, the 2nd Moderna shot put me into Anaphylaxis.

I’m 46 and had this since a kid. Mine is an extreme itchy pallet. I know watermelon is a trigger but the symptoms don’t seem to come on until I’m laying in bed at night. When the do I get no sleep from the itching. Weird thing is I get the same symptoms from cold temperature change. Lost so much sleep over the years which makes it hard to function. Still not sure exactly what it’s coming from as the cold temperature thing seems to show it’s not just food related

My throat itches a lot when I eat something I don't know yet, where I still have to undergo blood test to determine which type of food or protein I am allergic too. I came across this blog when I surf some info when I ate a Kiwi fruit earlier and my throat starts to itch again.
Now I know a little bit that my blood test can confirm soon. Thanks a lot this blog helps us.

I'm quite surprised that soymilk wasn't mentioned in this discussion, it's to be avoided at all costs with OAS patients, I'm one of them.

Certain foods make me itch and develop hives but not always. The issue I have is that it isn't always triggered. Sometimes i can eat tomatoes, muscadines with no issues, other times i'll just itch all over, and in rare instances I develop hives and tongue itching. Ugh!

Hi! I have many allergies and some OAS triggers but I'm wondering why I still get discomfort from drinking apple juice (I can't eat raw apples but fine with cooked). Is juice considered processed and if so, what else could I be reacting too?

Cooked fruits denature the protein responsible for the allergic reaction that are found in raw fruits.
