My son and I went there a few years back. We drove a little further and discovered large red chunks of host rock with massive geode clusters. The material, in small pieces, was all over in the road. When my son found a specimen containing the host rock we headed into the sagebrush turning over every large stone we could find. We found a few ant colonies but we found very large specimens.

We live in Idaho and have driven highway 93 often, but never stopped at Rabbit Springs. We decided to stop and check it out on our last trip. I'm very aware that we have rattlesnakes in Idaho, and every time we go out I'm very careful where I step ect. Heard my husband yell a loud oh. He ran into a baby one. He didn't get bit! Of all the places and years we've lived here, this is the 1st one we've seen! I'm very frightened of snakes, so ran and got in the car and we left. We're going down that way again soon, but gotta think on it if I want to stop there or not! Love all your videos!!

Rabbit springs was my first rockhounding location, many memories. I used to live thirty minutes north, great times.
It's a good location, I would love to spend some more time in the area driving around the hills.

Those dust storms are no joke out in this part of the country, along eastern Nevada and western Utah, the wind can get to 70 miles plus along the I80 corridor. I am excited to see what other locations you hit up from your trip.
Oh I know that now, we had to deal with so much wind in Utah.

@@CurrentlyRockhounding when you turn off the road if you go to the right and then go left up the hill there is a decent little spot on the right by the gravel pile> Dont remember if it above or below the pile. Looked like there is a spring back in there.

lol those thunder eggs look like the alien egg pods off the movie alien. i would love to have one. and when i was at lake superior on the beach ready to yooper hunt a storm moved in right at dusk and omg we got sand blasted. we left too with not a single yooper. drove 10 hr for that . ill have to drive through there on my way to washington tho so def stopping to camp there

UV reactive stones and natural resins fascinate the heck out of me. Maybe it's a holdover from my youth and black lights and posters. LOL
I have a small UV for handheld rocks and jewelry, but....Alexa, add UVBeast to wishlist. ;-)
They fascinate me as well, there's really something about them that draws a person in.
I have a beast myself, made a difference in finding UPPER lights or just walking over them.
What a fun hunt. So much material out there too. Been there many times on packing up in the middle of the night. Lots of coffee!

Boy, do those greens react to UV. I'd be collecting a jar of green and a jar of yellows too! Oh my, those winds. Love that you corect yourself. We all learn when you share!!! UV colors??? Are these colors specific to the minerals in each?
The exact location is between mile marker 4 and 5. There's a cut in the road on 93 and the Geodes are right in the lava flow. The basalt is very crumbly so you can just pop out the geodes.

Hi Jared, that is quite some spot you stopped at, those geodes are amazing the wAy they light up under UV light. Some of those should be quite a sight in a UV display. Keep Safe & Keep Rockin.

Oh man I had no idea you could go that far in and damn they get big. When I was there we stuck a bit closer to the road. I spent about an hour and a half there as a detour on my trip to yellowstone. The book I had says not to even try to get the whole ones out of the rock because they break so easy, which there's a bit of truth to since they're a bit fragile. None of ours glow under UV either , although the UV we have is fairly weak so maybe it'll glow under a shortwave?

They seem to be able to be extracted but it's a ton of work.
These don't really react under my weak shortwave light but they seem to react really well under my 365NM light.

Camping in that area really sucks, lost a tent there for sure. Ugly material but some of it tumbles up awesome!

It just blows your mind….What a wonderful corner of the world we live an play in. I did some arch survey work down by Bruneau Dunes….probably a stones throw. I might have missed it…is it opal or just agate in these thunder eggs-formed in basalt seams. I’ve got to get me a light.
It is a brutal and beautiful landscape.
All of what I have found there was agate filled.

The area seems beautifully clean of trash, just strewn with nice agate! I’m thinking of a picture with Picture Rock with a moon of the agate that lights ups under UV light. Some looks like waterfalls and glaciers. There seemed to be a small bit in one picture that flourished bright red?
It's a lovely area. Often the bright reds that are seen outside when using the UV its just moss or other plant material.

Hi, This is Arthur of Four Wheeling for Gems, I love your channel. I think those little balls that have druzy or crystals and a void inside are geodes right? Thunder eggs have a filled in center of agate, jasper or a mix of both, is that correct?
Hello! So that is a good question that a lot of people have. The name geode and thunderegg doesn't actually refer to the cavity or lack of but rather the host rock they come from.
All thundereggs come from rhyolite flows and can be solid or have cavities inside them where as geodes and nodules come from other types of igneous extrusive flows such as basalt.
An interesting example of this is the Dugway Geode beds which I'm sure you are aware of, well those are actually thundereggs technically but people have called them geodes for so long that the name has stuck.
I'm not trying to be stickler here for spelling but thunderegg is one word and now two. Thunderegg being the common name for lithophysae, whereas when its two words its like there is thunder and an egg.
There is a great book which I would highly recommend trying to locate a copy of called The Formation of Thundereggs (Lithophysae) by Robert Colburn which is without a doubt the best resource on the subject.

I'm not exactly sure what the mineral is here that is causing it.
I found something similar in a few pieces of petrified wood recently. Clear botryoidal quartz that fluoresces green. I ID'ed it as hyalite opal which gets its fluorescence from trace amounts of uranium. I'm open to considering that it might be something else.

Put coordinates in from video to go to Rabbit Springs which is only 57 miles and it takes me 171 miles from Boise ID. To an unknown destination past Twin Falls.

What does the UV light do for you? Tell you how much agate is in it?
That's not really that way to look at it. It shows what material is UV reactive.
Do you like the 365 for viewing the UV reactive minerals? I’m trying to choose a UV light.
The 365NM filtered light from UVbeast is really good and at $80 is considered a cheap entry level light. The skys the limit with price and wave lengths, it really depends on what you want to do with the light.

I'm new to your site and maybe you don't give specific details.

I thought UV light was short waved, not long waved
The UV spectrum goes from short to long.
uv is shorter in wavelength than visible light but there are different wavelengths in the uv spectrum
what chemicals make the agates fluoresce?
