  • Our visit to the Dugway Geode Beds was really enjoyable, and we found some excellent thundereggs.
    The one thing I would change about our visit would be the amount of time set aside for it, it's really a location you need a few days at to really grasp it.

      The world is good but the government makes it worse. There’s places I wanted to go metal detecting for fun and I found out recreation areas ban metal detecting. It’s a huge desert area and now you can just hike or drive a road. Idk why they did that except to close it down to potential mining etc without labeling it as wilderness.

    • @koltoncrane3099
      @koltoncrane3099 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was also upset cause there was a beautiful rock hound site I wanted to visit but it’s in that recreation area and it may now be illegal idk. The federal government and politicians term of recreation isn’t really recreational at all.

    • @koltoncrane3099
      @koltoncrane3099 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wish non profits existed or states would actually file rockhounding permits to keep areas open to rock hounders as environmentalists literally are closing down rock hounding sites in Utah. They’re also closing down camping sites to make a buffer zone to the wilderness area over by price. It’s crazy cause wilderness areas in states east of Colorado doesn’t have buffer zones.

    Hey Brother,I had watched this video earlier while I was moving Wind Blades from Vancouver to Montana, and this week when the job ended and while headed back to Texas I routed myself to the Dugway Geode site. After the long drive (62 miles) down the dirt road to get there, I spent the next five hours digging a hole on the East side of the pit you were in at the beginning of the video. The deeper I went the better, as I ended up with maybe 10 whole that are over 6-9 inches in diameter as well as too many to count that are smaller but whole. BIG THANKS for all of your videos that showcase what we can find in so many locations!!

    The big mounds you see out there were actually made from someone that had an old claim out there. You used to be able to pay a small fee and the backhoe would dig up new stuff all the time. There is a big long boring story of why the claim isn't out there anymore (if you want to know more, I can write up the explanation), but now its all under BLM control and a lot of the huge basket ball size geodes that used to be pretty common from there are almost impossible to find now that there isn't a backhoe out there.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there is some conflicting information out their on the subject.
      I'm aware of long store about the area and its claims also I agree the big mounds were created by the old claim owners, however a few times now BLM has gone to the from my understand and done work with a backhoe to make the pits safer and in turn make the mounds nicer. Doing so also make the dig site stay where its at.
      I still think its really nice place.

    • @bjurney85
      @bjurney85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CurrentlyRockhounding Its a great place. It looks like you hit it right after we had all the flash flooding (early to mid August). The roads are bad, but not normally as bad as you showed in your video. I was out there in June and it was pretty smooth, lots of people make it out there in their passenger cars and minivans. As far as the BLM going out there, its probably very rare, I have personally never heard of them going out there with a backhoe (the cost to transport one out there would be astronomically high). I would guess they probably did some work right after the old claim shut down but they don't do regular work out there at all (or the community is very secretive about when they do go). Glad you had a good time, I agree, a partial day out there is tough to find anything unless you know exactly where to look and dig, there are some people that do really well out there.

The road going into the pits at Dugway were washed out by 4 feet, ( meaning the road was 4 feet higher than the wash) And so we had to find alternate routes and washes to drive through. Does the GMC-300E Plus measure alpha radiation as well? As far as I know uranium minerals should emit alpha particles, which you need a Geiger counter that's specced to pick up on that kind of radiation. Their website doesn't mention anything about it picking up anything beyond beta and gamma particles so it may be worth getting a counter that can read Alpha radiation to completely rule out the presence of uranium minerals.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does not measure Alpha particles, that said Alpha particles can be stopped by a sheet of paper so even if there is Alpha particles coming of of this it really is harmless.
      The Geiger Counters that can pick up Alphas are well out of my current price range.

    If I remember right it doesn't take much uranium to make it glow, maybe a little phosphor. Also radium is in the decay chain and will be locked in. U is an alpha emitter, alpha can't penetrate 2" of air let alone the skin of the rock. So you might not see much on the outside. Also, U is water soluble, so a fresh break. I have some really nice Sard(?) a dark beer brown calcedony that I got over in Nv. from a vain. Some pieces that I have cut into cabs from it have a nice green glow others don"t. The ones that do measure just a little higher. I can't remember CPM. I have a little better meter(s), no offense meant. It's a side hobby that I don't wish on anyone.

Awesome place! im currently digging through some of the clay here, nothing i know of has ever been found here.. but not too far up the road is a clay mine. they have homer laughlin china company here, the ones that make fiesta ware everyone collects. well the clay mines for the china company are on the road between my house and my moms.. so i decided to go give it a look. they haven't been used in a very long time. but i did find some reports on minedat that they found quartz aluminum and some other minerals. Fingers crossed ill find something. My north carolina trip was cancelled due to my cousin running a fever.. dunno if its the vid.. but not chancing it. so ive been trapped in the land of sediment for a few months. and snow is flying soon.. boy id sure love to win that. i have very little from the western half of the states. ill get there someday. have a great weekend jared, n sarah. looking forward to more videos of your trip!

      also bud i can defiantly not identify that material. i know very little about Utah in general. here we do have a similar looking rock, in only small areas where it got exposed, mainly in the eastern panhandle. but it is very very old gneiss (i know west and east coast have similar tectonic history but not much else) the gneiss here was re heated by volcanic activity and became a more glass like rock with the gneiss striping intact. thing is under the microscope you can clearly see your specimen was a very silicate rich magma, causing the bubbles to form in between more stable less silica rich veins. it is not the same as the gneiss here. the only thing here I've seen that looks even relatively similar is slag glass from iron smelting. We can be pretty sure it isn't that. very interesting! if you figure it out please let us know in another vid. awesome, ttyl guys. ,glenna

      @@CurrentlyRockhounding I loved your video road trip portion, we must of crossed paths. We started at Topaz first, didn’t do the pay to dig, so didn’t find much on our own. Still a nice hike up the mountain, found a very small topaz and small amethyst crystals. Very hard rock to dig in! Anyways your video brought back my day trip through there. We took the same road pass that pony express building and then a very obscure road straight north to Dugway, til we ran into a fence lol 😂 finally found a paved road and made it back to the 80…. Definitely out in the middle of nowhere. Quite the day, but loved the adventure. Sorry for the long reply 🤪

    You mentioned @19:33 calcite as a possibility, but I'm guessing you tested it with acid by now. I'd agree it looks more glassy than crystalline anyway. Perhaps pitchstone (which I know next to nothing about)? No clue on the inclusions!

    It blows my mind how many people take the pony express trail to get to dugway geode beds! If you come in from the Delta side you can find sunstones, topaz, apache tears, garnet, fluorite, amethyst, and beryl. It's 60+ miles less dirt road, gets you there in the same amount of time from salt lake, and you can find lots of cool stuff along the way!

    Great video! I hope you get a chance to go back and dig again, because believe me when I say: you've only just scratched the surface of Dugway! My wife and I live in Utah, and have been there twice. From our experience, the truly good stuff is in that pink clay layer. You can get some gorgeous whole geodes with very sparkly quartz inside...but you have to dig. You won't usually find those high quality specimens on the surface. It can be a lot of work, but totally worth it!
