I read Flawless last Summer (not a romance reader really, but a friend got it for me in in a cute Taylor Swift themed 'blind date with a book' sort of thing) and I had a TERRIBLE time omg. Not only did I have issues with all the stuff you mentioned, but the running thread of Rhett CONSTANTLY commenting on how cute and small and teeny tiny and petite and teacup sized Summer is and how he's just so big and broad and manly in comparison was just so egregious to me haha. Maybe it's just because I'm a tall gal myself and have always hated the misogynistic perception that men must be MASSIVE and their female partners must be MINIATURE, but it just absolutely riled me up. But I feel like that's the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this book haha! Also, as a straight woman, I can categorically say that for me, beard burn, or any kind of beard friction or texture is horrendous. Sensory nightmare. Painful, uncomfortable, a skincare nightmare lol.

I am actually writing a lesbian romance novel where they have a fake Honeymoon in Cancun LOL. It happens in an all inclusive hotel named Xcaret, I went there 2 years ago, amazing experience, the food is great, the staff is kind and helpful, the beach is beautiful, it has parks if you like activities, but also spas and pottery classes if you want to chill. The Hotel itself has great architecture, it has a child-free zone if that’s what you’re looking for. Not me doing so much promo, but I do want to go back so bad. Love your content ❤

Love this so much! Every time I read a straight romance, even when I enjoy it, I just feel so much gayer at the end. Like even the best straight couples in fiction are just so sad to me lol. What you were saying about the lesbian couple in Happy Place is so real! Being the only lesbian couple in a group of friends IS a different experience but straight writers don't understand that. I recently reading The Wedding People, which is kind of a literary coming of age romance, and I was so surprised that the lesbian character kind of acknowledges that, just fully calls her straight friends out on the fact that the thing they're whining about and acting like is a universal experience is very much a STRAIGHT experience. More of that in books, please!

As a lapsed straight woman (bi-enby) who loves beards (see:husband), BEARD BURN? Has to be a kink. Also, the whole "_____ bunny" (buckle bunny, chuckle bunny, snow bunny, etc) thing is somewhat common (maybe only USA wise), yet imo only misogynistic people really use it. 😅
Emily Henry's writing style usually works for me, idk y ppl get mad at someone saying it doesn't for you. That being said, Happy Place is my least favorite by far (miscommunication trope *doesn't work* on an 8yr marriage, signed smn in an 8yr marriage).

As an Emily Henry fan, I totally understand that her writing is not for everyone, I think it tends to verge on melodramatic. And Happy Place was one of the few romances where I wanted the couple to not get back together :D Also, beard rash is a thing, as a few people have already pointed out, and no it is not pleasant and when it happens I definitely don't feel like I'm "branded", lol

I don't read a lot of romance, straight or otherwise, I recently got The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern by Linda Cohen Loigman as a BOTM selection, and found it adorable. It's a generational romance, going between 1920s Brooklyn and 1980s Florida with a couple who couldn't get it together when they were teenagers but have a second chance in their 80s. Well worth the read.

If you want a good straight romance fantasy book, I remember enjoying Graceling by Kristin Cashore. It's been quite a few years since I read it and I have been meaning to reread it, but I remember it handling the characters and their chemistry really well as well as the fantasy world they live in and the plot being interesting. The only other straight romances I have read that I genuinely enjoyed have been manga. If you ever want to try that, my top recommendation is Snow White with the Red Hair. I genuinely love that series.
Also I learned about beard rash from this video and I would like to go back to before that.

I wholeheartedly agree with you about Emily Henry. I read Book Lovers and Beach Read (which I always confuse in my head because they sound the same and tbh they kind of are…except one is an editor and agent, and the other is authors LOL).
I just kept wondering…AM I READING THE SAME BOOKS AS EVERYONE? They’re so wildly forgettable and they’re needlessly long with pointless and distracting subplots.
Tried listening to Funny Story just for something to entertain my brain while walking my dogs and it just DRAGGED. Didn’t give a flying shit about anyone or anything. Ended up DNF-ing out of self-respect lol.
I really don’t get it. The banter isn’t terrible and the writing is competent but the characters and plots are little more than empty husks 😂😭

SOOOO TRUE re: Emily Henry and honestly idk what everyone loves about her books!! They are not cute or whimsical or happy romcoms they way they’re pitched, at least I don’t find them to be so. I gave her books two tries and both times I noped out of there lol. The first one I just was not enjoying at all, but the second one I actually did find had some rly annoying and also even problematic stuff in it 😅 but fr it sometimes rly feels controversial to say I don’t like her books in book spaces.
