Today I just learned that there are dog diapers! I have been washing the sheets almost daily for a while. She's slept with me for the last 14 years. Thank you for your easy to follow instructions. I don't know why it never occurred to me to use baby diapers.
I am not on facebook so thank you for the website in video at 1:06 I looked in files on that website and found Beverly's Diaper Instructions and Carrie's diaper notes. The Parksbird pattern link has a forward for where to buy the pattern now, at least it's not a dead end link. Thanks for making this video!

You just gave me an idea. My Chihuahua is very narrow through her chest and shoulder. She is about 6 lbs. I've bought baby onesies tried to sew the neck hole to her size. She manages to get through it and stuck half way down her chest. I tried the harness with suspender clips, worked for about a day til she figured out how to get the diaper off. So now I'm thinking a whole suit but elastic around the collar like a lease collar. Take the panties you made add a Tshirt top pattern adding an extra wide neck collar with elastic. Maybe she won't find her way out of it. She is freaking Houdini with clothes and diapers.
This is a fantastic tutorial. I just can't find the pattern anywhere! I searched for the group, but it doesn't seem to be the one that contains this pattern - it is a lot different. I even searched the name Beverly Kirkpatrick. Can anyone help? Thx.
My 14-year-old Aussie male now needs a diaper. Problem is, if pees during the night it soaks through the diaper pad I put in and all the way through the fabric. I have used two plastic shopping bags and cut them to the same shape as the diaper as plastic pants, but hate the way that looks. What would you recommend as a good fabric to make a rubberize outer diaper?
Hi Holly! Thanks for a great question. There are some really good products out there that can help. One that we have found to work well is called zorb. It's a little bit pricey but works great. A quote from amazon regarding this fabric says "A 2 1/2 inch by 10 inch strip of Zorb weighs 4g. Cotton fleece weighs 2g. They are of similar thickness, about 1/8 inch. One strip of Zorb soaked in water, no longer dripping, weighed 45g, holding 41g of water. The cotton was similarly soaked, dripped, and weighed, and found to be 10g, holding 8g of water." This might be exactly what you need. Let us know if you decide to try it and if it works. Good luck!
@@lindaw.2432 Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will look into Zorb! I also ordered a twin-sized mattress protector that I could use to make some "plastic pants." What I'll do is make them about the same size as your diaper pattern--maybe a smidge larger-- and put that on the outside of the cloth diaper that has the diaper pad on the inside. The mattress protector, obviously, will be large enough to make several pair of outer pants. And using your suggestion of the velcro will be a lot easier than trying to get Roland to stay still while I tape the tabs together! BTW...I'm sure you've discovered this, but yours is the best site I've found for this issue! Thank you!
I had a similar problem. So at night, I found that disposable human baby diapers -- in my toy poodle's relative size, with a tail slit/hole scissored out -- were dependably absorbent and never leaked overnight. 👍 When not overfilled with urine, they also hold up well during the day. So if a doggy parent is unable to make or buy reusable ones (we utilized both types), the baby diapers are a great option -- any basic type/brand that can be made to fit well. The diaper will need a hole or slit cut to accommodate the dog's tail, with the added possibility of securing excess material (to itself, not the dog) at the waistline with tape or a clip ...only if needed for an ideal, customized fit. For my girl, I simply cut an "X" at the appropriate level for her tail to extend out normally & comfortably. Because of her slender waist, I used a fairly flat metal clip, like the ones used for office documents or to close food bags, but very small for her size and safety/comfort -- it held excess material a bit like a belt buckle (material was folded over itself a couple inches), but on her upper back to the side of her spine..and it never bothered her. Anyway, I hope this additional diaper info is helpful to you or someone else who stumbles across it. ☺
An excellent, step by step , tutorial! The best one I have seen yet. I am going to attempt this ASAP. I have purchased three different brands of washable diapers, and they all irritate my dogs area surrounding her tail. If there are any tips on making that area less irritating, I would appreciate advice. I can’t find the pattern. The Parksbird Pattern link is a dead end. 😩😥
Thank you! You can find a pattern on our FB page at facebook.com/groups/artisanswithamission. Go to files and search for diaper. As for making the area around the tail less irritating, you can make the hole either a straight cut or make a circle opening. The circular opening might be less irritating. In addition, maybe use a soft flannel, prewashed and 100% cotton, for the inside of the diaper instead of a firmer non-brushed cotton fabric. We have several expert diaper makers in our group, so feel free to join us.
Hi I would so like to make your doggy diaper for my 15yr old dog, unfortunately I couldn't get the pattern? maybe my age has got something to do with it? 74. please help. Thanks
We make and adapt patterns as we need them for rescued dogs and cats. Come visit our special belly band and diaper page on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/295802950619995.
Both males and females are able to wear these, however, if the use is primarily for catching pee, for males we recommend a belly band which wraps only around the leaky boy bits. We have a video for that too. Some people have been known to use both a belly band and a diaper together. If a diaper is needed for a male dog and there is a worry about being able to catch all the pee, it can be helpful to 1) modify the pattern just a bit to make it a bit longer, and/or 2) add some elastic to the waist area so it fits more snugly without discomfort and therefore won't allow escaping pee to leak. Also, use in conjunction with human non-scented incontinence pads as a removable lining. They are very absorbent and the diaper (and belly band if used) will catch any leaks. Hope this helps!
You can order batting online, or you can use extra layers of absorbent fabric, such as cotton or a good quality flannel. The batting is great, but not mandatory. Use a female incontinence pad to line it when putting it on your pet and that will help catch all the leaks.
I was planning on buying some on Amazon today but thought about checking TH-cam to see how to make them . I actually have everything to make these . Now if I just get my mind to work . I could have do anything I put my mind to it until my husband past . 2 years ago . Know it's like my smart part went with him . I got a blocking now .
You have a couple of options. One is to put on a onesie type of outfit over the diaper. Another option is to look into doggy suspenders that attach to the diaper and then connect to the neck either to the collar or will have an elastic neck band. The suspenders seem to work very well. Hope this helps!
