Darn, I got held up at 1:26 where you say “once you have a mask created” and you click on the layer called “s” and then it says “mask underneath. How do I do that?
Thank you so much! Also reminder for everyone to place the mask on the thing you actually want to mask! I was driving myself nuts having created a mask of basically nothing lol
Hi, answer is not really but if you want straight edges, you should consider using masks. I have another video doing this th-cam.com/video/-ePJZvcb6Lw/w-d-xo.html
Still relevant! Didn't quite work for me because I want a straight edge reveal - not round like the brush shape - but still good info. Extra bonus points for sounding like a normal person.
@@PhillipdoyleMTU hey, tnx for the answer, I had scaled down the element. It did not help. I've then made mask on that same layer and applied Stroke effect. It worked. Must be a glitch.
@@PhillipdoyleMTU but I thought the idea was that the stroke creates the mask, I didn't see you close the mask by drawing back onto the first point. thanks
@@PhillipdoyleMTU Thanks, so back to the original question. If I use a pen tool on top of a shape object, I'm not seeing any kind of mask option. All I have is 'shape 1' under the contents in the timeline. And when I add the stroke effect, nothing happens. Also, I don't see any response to the brush thickness when I add the stroke effect. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong..
Possible but unfortunately it's not as easy. You need to create your 'S' on its own layer, then create your animated path on a separate shape layer. The choose add > add path from the layer's submenu. Draw your path tracing over the 'S' below. The shape layer allows you to choose butt, round or projecting cap. You then add a 'trim path' from the same shape layer's 'add' dropdown menu. Animate it. Set the shape layer as a trackmatte for the 'S' layer directly below. Tricky if you're not comfortable with shape layers and tracjmattes!
Hi Philip, I have a different question. My image is WAY bigger than the brush and I can't reveal the entire image. How can I do it? Because the size is 1200x600px. Is not very big and the brush can only be until 200.. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi. Just hit the 'M' key with the layer selected. Brings up all masks attached to the layer.
Thanks! Does anyone know if there's a way to have a rectangular brush tip rather than a round one? Thanks!
helped me a fuck ton, thank you
Excellent! Very simple, the best tutorial about this topic.
Came for the content, stayed for the Irish accent

Is there any way to make the end of the brush a straight edge instead of a rounded edge? Nice tutorial!
I need the same thing!! Have you already figure it out?

Thanks a bunch !
Thank you so much!!! This is really helpful!

I love your accent ☘
Anything new in AF 2019 for animated mask reveal?
thanks for the video, but this effect is too slow when i play ram preview and everything else is fast. can anyone solve this?
THANKS!
I have a problem, when I increase brush size nothing happens
I think there is a maximum brush width on the stroke effect. You may have maxed it out.

hi phillip , how do i able the workspace?
I don't understand how you made the mask? You just traced the shape with the pen tool, and then what? How was it suddenly just a mask?
@@PhillipdoyleMTU Oh! Thanks!

Maybe the strokes need to be drawn on an adjustment layer?
Thanks man...
Hi, May I know if you can change the stroke cap? not a rounded one. but the Butt Cap or Projecting. I found nothing to change that. Thank you!

@@PhillipdoyleMTU THANK YOU! I GOT IT NOW. YOU'RE A BIG HELP!
Does this work with other things too? Not just text? Like for example revealing a rainbow
Hi. Absolutely. Any visible shape can be revealed with an animated mask.
To create a mask on a text: right click: create-> create mask on text....
Muito obrigado! Me salvou!

Hi, I'm not sur. I would suggest using a masks instead. The results are very similar if not identical.
