    Good info and video! Vic Braden had the proper serve motion down almost 50 years ago. His work with high-speed cameras and looking at the physics of tennis was far ahead of the times. He was criticized a lot in those days, but we now know he was spot on!

    This makes total sense to me, and thank you! But a question... many slow motion video showing how pros serves - after the toss, they "step forward" aka the right foot take a small step to close the gap with the left foot (for right hander) before they "jump" to hit the ball. So if the weight is in the right (back) leg, how could this be possible?

    Thanks for the video Meike! I went down to the court this morning and gave it a try. The coiling that having more of your weight on the back foot combined with the hip movement definitely helped with the kinetic chain and seemed to make the arm speed come more naturally rather than being 'forced'. The main trouble I had was having weight on my back foot was causing ball tosses to go above my head rather than out into the court. 😂

    This is amazing help. Haven't played in 40 years and I've got joint problems from other sports. Can't stay sideways so I'm copying Steffi Graff now. Plus with upcoming left hand surgery I'm tossing up from racket throat.🎾

    I can definitely agree that lloading my back hip/leg makes a huge difference to power. I think the reason is that only through pushing off the back leg are you able to rotate your hips with any force.

    thanks for the no-nonsense approach Meike! sometimes i think just focusing on the throwing motion, ask the player: what would you do if you were trying to throw a ball/heavy ball VERY FAR AWAY? the position the player would get in is more or less the ideal back leg load with the shoulder over shoulder.

    I tried the right rear leg squat but it didn't work for me, but using the pinpoint stance focusing on more weight and coil on the right back foot (about 70/30) really helped. This especially helps to "stick the landing" at the end. Before I was landing off balance all over the place, but now more consistently landing on my left foot with right foot up and right knee bent, in balance.

  • @Better_Call_Raul
    @Better_Call_Raul ปีที่แล้ว

    _Definitely load the back leg_ 👍
    But it is still possible to load on the back leg *_AND_* have the hip stick out as shown in the Sampras clip.
    I employ a platform stance and imagine there is a bar-stool just inside the baseline and I am "sitting" on the stool. Picturing this stool will cause your hip to stick out. Got this tip from Coach Nate at PlayYourCourt.
    So I am not clear why sticking the hip out is wrong. 🤔

    Hello Meike, greetings from Germany!! This is a very interesting topic.
    I guess i did it „your“ way when i just started tennis. But i changed it due to online instruction.
    Why do you think Nic‘s instruction is wrong? Maybe both ways are possible depending on your body structure?! A zoom call between both of you would be nice.

    • @julianpenfold1638

      Surely one could settle this with some kind of pressure sensors in the shoes. Take a selection of pros and record the relative pressure on each foot in different phases of the serve.

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's exactly what Biomechanics do and have seen better results with loading down and back. I wasn't actually aware that Nick teaches it that way. I think he's a fantastic coach and I have to look at his videos before I comment on what he says. I'll check it out.

    The counter argument I have seen to this is the tricky thing about pushing off the back foot is you will be pushing up too much and not forward enough which is not great considering your ball toss is slightly in the court and you cannot push yourself forward into the court. Because I see conflicting arguments on You Tube I now push off both feet equally.

    Ich würde gerne mal die Diskussion dazu sehen, wenn du dich mit IntuitiveTennis unterhältst. Er sagt in seinen Videos stets, dass das vordere Bein die meiste Arbeit macht. Ich halte mich da persönlich an Dr. Kovacs 😁

    • @sergiosimbula
      @sergiosimbula ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Meike I find this also very fascinating, because I think you and Nick are the two best online coaches overall. But on this topic you are clearly in the Dr Kovac camp. Loading the back leg on the serve, in line with the Kinetic Chain. Yet according to Nick this whole Kinetic Chain is wrong. Namely it doesn't start from the ground up, but the other way around. I love Nick and think he is brilliant but I just don't get his view on this.

    • @user-oj7co5wm8g
      @user-oj7co5wm8g ปีที่แล้ว

      Nic has some excellent coaching but often neglects the technical components on certain strokes. He’ll say, he’s done the research but not provide any evidence. I think it’s more about his brand being “intuitive” but the game has evolved past that if you’re trying to advance.

    • @MeikeBabelTennis
      @MeikeBabelTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dr. Kovacs is not the only one having done the research on this and teaching it that way. I have seen better results with loading down and back in my own serve. But I do realize that some people might feel differently and then adapt in a different way that works for them. I'll go with science AND my own experience on this one. Maybe I trust it more because the level of sport science involvement was was never available to me and I really could have used better coaching on my serve to be honest. I was taught all 3 myths of the serve: push the hip out, the serve is like a pitch and scratch your back. 3 reasons why my serve was DEFINITELY NOT a weapon AND I had shoulder issues.

    Does the pin point method contribute to the pushing the hip towards the (or inside the court)? I want to say Boris Becker and Andy Roddick did this (hips inside the court). On the personal side, my beer belly prevents me from this bad method.

    I'm confused: You and Nick from Intuitive Tennis are my to-go-to coaching sources and I know that you both appreciate each other or are even friends and share a similar coaching philosophy. Nevertheless, in this case you seem to contradict each other. In his video th-cam.com/video/Lomfb5AcsK0/w-d-xo.html Nick says that one shouldn't load the back leg in the trophy phase, while you seem to say the opposite. Am I understanding something wrong?

    • @reuelray

      You took the words out of my mouth but I didn't want to say it. I watch Nik a lot too and they 'are' contradicting each other. It was almost like she wanted to spew out Nik's name when she was ranting in the beginning of the lesson. I think it's up to the individual, like the difference between a platform and pinpoint serve; the short take-back versus the long take back, and shooting the elbow back. Nik said he was her ball boy in one of his vids. Maybe she think that whippersnapper doesn't know what he's talkin about. 😯
