- Episode 2 of Shelters of Britain sees me sleep in a log cabin hidden in the Dorset countryside, with its own private lake. I go hunting for 140 million year old fossils by the coast, and go fishing in the lake. I spend the night in this log cabin, cook good food and chill with my dog Jaxx.

More info on the Cabin (For those that are interested):
The timber was sourced from a local forest in Oakhampton. The Cabin features 8 large panels of glass each tailor cut to fit perfectly into the frames. The mezzanine floor and staircase were a unique challenge. A complete t ree trunk was used for the staircase, with a half moon shape at the top so that it would fit flush against the floor. The steps are made from solid oak, and African Hardwood was incorporated inot the handrail and mezzanine beams. Much of the oak that was used in the cabin was salvaged from one of the great storms years ago. The floorboards on the mezzanine were reclaimed timber. The woodstove was installed on a Welsh slate hearth. And the sliding door to the bathroom is handmade from Oak in Poland. The cabin overlooks a natural lake that has been fished very little, allowing the fish to thrive and grow to a decent size. Years ago, Canadian goslings were introduced to the lake and now each spring they return to raise their chicks.

Great watching this. We lost our Russel Thursday last week at 15 1/4. Love to see Jax doing what a Russel does best. The three lurchers are missing him as well.
I'm from Dorset, currently in the USA, but was over for Christmas and stayed around Corfe Castle in a small house with a wood burner. It makes such a difference! There's nothing like a cold night and watching a hot fire! If you get a chance to stay anywhere near Kimmeridge, Dorset (also good for fossils) Check out the great new Pliosaur exhibition at the Edges collection. Amazing stuff! Thanks for showing more of my home county. It's gorgeous place!
My surname is Dorset. From the USA and have visited Dorset and stayed in a thatched roof inn in Lyme Regis. Such a beautiful area. Never thought I'd see a log cabin in the south of England.
Great show, great idea, wonderful to see what Britain has, been to so many here in the states, keep up the good work, give your dad a hug from all of us here in Michigan
🤗 🤗🤗 to Michigan.
@@Sally-nse2thank you for being so kind to take the time to comment ❤
@@timgovan1 your comment was lovely so it was my pleasure, wishing you safe and well always.
Second one in and I know I'm gonna love this series
Plus, I'm sure it's nice for you to get to explore other people's creations
Although I do love yours. I can't wait to see what you take along with you in line of technique, craftsmanship, and new styles.
What a fantastic location and cabin. It's great to see your knife skills include a chef knife. Also, it's good to see you afford yourself some luxury for a change. The hatchet looks incredible and I look forward its release. Great video, Mike.
Love fossil hunting been awhile since i have done it
That thumbnail is glorious, 10/10
Awesome, awesome place!
What a beautiful place Dorset is just on your doorstep 😂
by the way, i learn English by your videos, thanks a lot!❤
Well done👍✨
Thank you for sharing your youth with us. Please continue though your maturity.

Another fabulous looking cabin, amazing to have the pond on the doorstep, and some impressive fossils on the beach.

I never comment here. I have to say i like the new content. The rustic air bnb and unusual accommodations in Britain is interesting. Please continue.
How lovely.

Another great episode. I think this series will be a good one.
That cabin is my idea of heaven. Prices are nice too for a family of four for a couple of nights. I wish it was closer to me!

I do like the look of that belt hatchet. 👍
Looked like loads of fun!! And I love my axe!
Great series Mike!
The fossil hunting on the beach looks like a lot of fun!
Spent the Lyme Regis section checking for Atomic Shrimp wandering in the background 😂
I know a place just like this in East Sussex! Bit expensive, though...one of those 'I wish I'd bought it first places'.
Nice looking cabin and very picturest setting.
Love it
Bulunduğunuz ortam harika bilgiler için çok teşekkür ederim 😊
Nice!😊😊
A great cabin for a long vacation! Too bad I'm across the pond! Thanks for sharing.
Since my wife and I got married in 1989, we had a dream of owning a log cabin home. We even went as far as to have an architect friend design and do a full set of construction blueprints for us. It's still our dream. Maybe some day....
Thanks for the video, looks a cracking lodge
Now THIS is what you need to build on your land.
You can find lots of fossils in Arizona and around Florida
I really enjoy the longer videos where you and a friend or two go camping. Any plans to one soon?
What a beautiful place. Perhaps my beatufl bride of forty five years can stay there with me.
Lovely place mate.
This is a good series 👍🏻👍🏻
This might be the third lime of watching this 😂
Hi Mike it would have been nice to take the Family along the kids would gave loved it 😊
Thanks. Looks like a great place. I’ve been to Europe, but hope to get to England some day. Half of my ancestors came from there. 🎸🔪
Jax approved. 😀👍
Watch you channel for a while now and every time you remind me of Kelvin Fletcher
Hi Mike
That was a lovely cabin.
Can you say when the axes will be up for sale please and the price.
Will you have them at the bushcraft show?
Kind regards
Paul
Great 👍 video I 2 could also live there!! Woz it expensive might check it out if not 4 next year's camp I'm all booked up this year tent April July and camping pod new year's eve with a bushcraft course in May!!
Like most places, it’s a lot cheaper to go this time of year outside of peak season. Sounds like you having a cracking year ahead!
@TAOutdoors true my camping pod new year's is costing me £169 paid £70 but I go 4 4 days 2 vanish I'm the English version of the midweek escape artist just wish I could do videos!!
thats getting fished on later .. 👊
Now I know wherefrom to get my next hatchet!!!
Wow. Great cabin. I didn't think you could top the hobbit but but this is close.
You caught that fish on a tesco sandwich so you could say that every little helps
Interesting, never knew there were log cabins like this over in Britain, they are fairly common up here in Alaska, hopefully I'll be able to get over and see Britain some day.
That’s a cabin and a half. My mum thinks there should be a TA OUTDOORS COOK BOOK!, sounds tasty Mike. Hopefully the T-Rex 🦖 is asleep 💤💯🤙.
Yes, with a chapter on “sea foodie”
Maybe there should be a cookbook.
@Johnphil that's a great idea
👍👍. If it hadn't mentions Britain. As it reminds me of 🇨🇦. Especially with place to 🎣🎣 a couple, of ft away from your home
Does the cabin have any Danish connection? Because Dyrehaven means The Animal Garden in Danish, and is/was a name used by the Danish kings for their private hunting grounds.
Good point! Not sure but I will ask 👍🏻
Bournemouth and studland beach, august bank holidays. Great memories. Far too much lsd... lol
The real heaven
I live in TN USA. I want to go to England to stay at this cabin.
I really hope to catch the damn axe!!! They always sell out so fast
You know what they say, red sky at night sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.
you plannin on moving on up yorkshire on your mission bro 😎
All over the country! So hopefully yes!
@@TAOutdoors yess 👍
Haven't seen the whole video yet, but I'd thought some of you would like to know.
The name of the cabin, "Dyrehaven", means Zoo, or directly translated animal garden (Dyr = animal, haven=garden), in Danish and Norwegian
Sedimentary rocks are where they are found.
😁👍🏼
thanks for a cool video❤, I wanted to ask: what happened to the fish, did you grill it or release? it was really big one!
Released
What is the name of the cabin and how do you book can u let me know please looks stunning great video mate
Loving the new series on cabins around Britain, but Dear God, man- WHY the Pointing Wojack Meme for the cover image?
👍😊
It might be too far of a drive but… there’s an AirB&B in a WWII Submarine in Manitowoc, Wisconsin USA. 😂😂😂
When are the axes available?
End of January/Early Feb, will let people know via the email newsletter on the website
Could you build a 100% wooden wheelbarrow
Excellent Cabin, think everyone could definitely live there,..just wondering,. Is it a dogs coat or dogs body temperature that keeps them warmer than us? Thanks
How did your woods fair in storm earlier this month.
Hi Mike always love your films and this one is no exception- just a thought for when you are back in the woods - I know you have your own that you manage but could you n Andy n Simon n mark n the like when you are out n about would it do any good or indeed harm to plant a couple of trees -not needed to be on film but would be nice. I know that you all use dead trees for firewood n building stuff there’s just so very many dead trees n I don’t see a replanting plan anywhere I’ve even contacted the forestry commission because of the acres of trees that have been taken I asked if they had plans to replant but they were at best vague and what I took away was mind your own business so with that in mind do you fancy starting a trend that could potentially spread across the world - just a thought xx
Prons..... Im guessing shrimp..... thought you were talking about some sort of plant in other videos lol
👍
👍
Are you allowed to pick any of those ammonites up and take them home?
Love to own and build something like this but.....
brown ta trekkers please mate
Hi everyone ! I recently started a TH-cam channel and I’m about to post my first video. I would greatly appreciate your support on my journey ! I’m awake this will take a long time but Rome wasn’t build in a day, hope you all have a great morning !
🐕🐈⬛🦫🦔🐿🪓🔨🗝⚒️🪚🥾🥾🛖🪵⛺️👣👣🚣♂️
Hey Mike can you ship the axes over to the US???
Yes we do 👍🏻
How can you tell you’re in the U.K.? When you have a body of water no bigger than a pond, and you call it a lake.
And then, of course, anywhere in the US with more than 10 houses is called a City 😂
Are the owners danish ??? Cause that name off the cabin, the name is a place in denmark 😉
