    Just a tip for anyone looking Into buying one of these toro self paced mowers….please note they are not like the regular front wheel drive self propelled mowers that pull you along. They are rear wheel drive, very hard to pull and annoying as heck to push it forward them pull back again ughhhh plus it ruts up the yard when doing that, you can’t just turn easily by putting ur front wheels up anymore cus back ones keep moving and drag u if u try, it DOES NOT pull you along at all, like a regular self propelled, it is basically a push mower. Some may love it but I absolutely HATE this mower!

    Excellent Tips n Tricks!
    I will be purchasing a 20373 model next week for use in a residential lawn mowing enterprise.
    I chose this model primarily for the blade stop function.
    My 30 year old silver deck JD has this and is great for navigating gravel areas.
    I was hesitant about the personal pace, but everyone seems to love it.
    I just visited my local dealer and shop tested it and it is much smoother than I thought it would be.
    Your adjustment tricks will aid in finding the sweet spot.
    Thanks for the information!
    Dave

      Picked it up yesterday!!!
      The fine tuning of the personal pace is spot on out of the box.
      I am also using the higher handle adjustment.
      Just walk into the handle....this thing is so cool!

    A couple of points is - Personal Pace is not a traditional 'self-propelled'; it is more push assisted . You just walk forward and press forward. If you're used to the mower going, and you following along, or you're used to the mower going the same speed up a slope as down a slope, then this will take some getting used to. Mine is new, and there is effort to get it come back even on a slight slope, when you think gravity would assist, it's still a pull back.

    • @jane1385
      @jane1385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! they should write this in the description because it feels like a push mower and not self propelled at all. I would have saved a ton of money and just bought a push mower if i wanted a push kind. This is the worst lawn mower I’ve ever owned. Even with the adjustments from this video. I want the regular kind that basically pulls me along! Lol but really

  • @Cragified
    @Cragified 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Personal Pace and self propelled is honestly a very situational thing. If you have nice flat even ground then I can see it being of value to someone that just wants to walk along without doing much work.
    But here in hilly ground the personal pace feature ends up just being annoying because you are in fact just pushing it yourself since it can't get enough traction which in turn tears up the lawn. The additional weight from the drive line also is a downside when having to maneuver it on slopes.
    If you have any channel of input with TORO I'd advise you to advise them to be more selective in their marketing and sales. Most of the time someone that would buy a personal pace in hilly terrain isn't going to be as satisfied as a lighter weight push along.
    P.S. The Super Recycler feature as silly as the name is, is a great mulching feature.

    Thank you for the great video. I’m planning to buy one of these this week. And this helped me understand more about the workings.
    My current mower is 19 years old! Still running, but I wanted a self propelled.
    Another tip, I’ve always winterized by running till empty.
    And also use stabil gas stabilizer.
    And each year, new spark plug and air filter.
    Happy lawn work.

      This mower' drive sucks .. dealer is right. There wasn't one 'customizing' tip, but if the drive cable is tight the drive motor won't travel as far ... releasing better & sooner.

    I had a Toro Personal Pace and was one of my favorite mowers. Such a time saver on regular cuts or when mowing is not heavy. Like how the handle bar is finally adjustable for height. Only reason I don't have it is I went with a 33 inch Troy Bilt with 12 hp engine in the fall in Cleveland OH. Nothing shuts down that bad boy.

      I'd think that's how it really should be. From what LCN says in this video it should be in line with your natural walking forward pace, so if you need 1 finger to get the mower to move forward, I'd think that is pretty dang good. What I notice is a lot of people shove that handle forward as fast and hard as they can...yep it'll leave burn out marks in the lawn HAHA!!! As a result the mower just kind of jumps forward, well duh, its like adding throttle and dumping the clutch on a vehicle with a manual transmission, its going to jump forward and probably do a little burnout in the process.
      I don't own a personal pace, and I had a Toro FWD for a while and hated it, it just didn't cut well at all so I gave it away to someone who didn't care about the mulching function and had a lawn large enough that they welcomed the self propel feature. I'm looking into getting a personal pace, but I think I want the super-recycler model, maybe that'll take care of the mulching woes the regular Toro had.

    Awesome video! Got my personal pace super Toro a year and a half ago, and could figure out why it was becoming less and less responsive... Pulled it out of the garage today to tune it up, and now with the adjustment to the tension wire, it's good as new! Maybe better.... Lol, thank you sir!

    i have the exact same mower. Very informative, especially about the wheels locking up... thanks for the info.
    Also what I've done to mine is somthing simple. When you're in the middle of mowing and need too let go of the mower and move something out the way, I just simply added a Velcro strap (tv/cmptr. cord organizer) around the gas handle in Personal Pace handle. so when I release the personal pace handle the lawnmower stays running, so I don't have to keep restarting it.

    To slow it down means you are slipping the belt.(think, belt wear) When mine broke it took hours to replace. Had to remove everything except the engine and front wheels. My old Honda had two speeds, it was and still is a MACHINE!

    Thanks for this video. Yesterday my new super rec. came from a box store with that cable not hooked up. I loosened that cable bracket and with enough slack was able to hook up the cable. Now the machine does have a slight lurch when taking off. I pretty much figured i had to back that cable off and you confirmed that for me. thanks. Now if I can get it to go as slow as my old Snapper I'll be very happy. It gave me a work out today and these old legs sure feel it.

      How are you adjust the Personal Pace on the Timemaster? I was excited to see this video and went out to see if i can slow down the reaction time as I am learning the personal pace and am not very smooth at it or thrilled with the system. My previous mower system is is similar to the lever on the Turfmaster and was easier to regulate but don't have that mower now. To my surprise there is no thumb knob with legend as Alan demonstrated on my 2019 Timemaster. Thinking there is no adjustment because we have the blue assist handle or can the nut and clamp holding down the cable accomplish the same thing as what Alan mentions. Thanks to Both Alan and Ryan for their Timemaster video.

    The knob would be a great retrofit for older Personal Pace mowers. Would make adjustment much easier. The cable seems to stretch after a few uses and then you lose your immediate responsiveness of the personal pace system until you adjust the tension again.

    The problem is that you have to adjust the cable so that the spring connected to the belt pulley is tight, and also so that the cable at the handle will move when you push the handle. It’s hard to get the cable tight up top, and have the right tension on the belt. The belt either is spinning the wheels with the handle not pushed in. Or it won’t spin the wheels at all.

    glad I found this.. I will need to try some of these adjustments. a neighbor borrowed mine and broke the traction cable/parts so I had to replace it. now to engage the traction, I have to pull the pace bar completely back, which is opposite of the intended function. also to pull the mower back, I have to depress the bar so it is not all the back towards to handlebar... also backwards... ugh

      I have a 2009 model with rear drive and the plastic gears in the wheels would wear out and cause uneven movements and a grinding noise. I did find an “upgraded” wheel kit online that has metal gears inside the wheels and replacement axle gears to match up. Works much better now. I’m not sure if the newer models have gone to metal or not.

    What is the actual advantage of the Person Pace? With the other self propelled mowers on the lower models, the bar works fine for me and my preference. If you want to go faster or slower is just a matter of how much you pull up on the bar. I can do that with one finger. I'm trying to like the Personal pace and will make some of the adjustments as you suggested.

    So you've had your personal pace mower for long enough now to know of any issues with the system. Has your mower given you any trouble with the personal pace system at all? Looks pretty dummy proof in operation other than possibly having some cable issues or a transmission failure, have you experienced anything the homeowner should do to lubricate or otherwise maintain on the system?

    So sorry I bought a Toro Personal Pace. First, learned I hate rear-propelled walk behinds. A front propelled walk behind is much easier to maneuver, especially when pulling back, lifting up and sliding around obstacles, etc. Second, the Personal Pace is garbage, I should have listened to my Spidey Sense when the Toro dealer was describing it. A traditional full self-propel is the best (with front propel) and with larger rear wheels. Third, the adjustment for the Personal Pace is a terrible design, plain stupid. And it never really has an ideal setting or adjustment, it either jerks too fast off the start or it never really propels...you end up pushing 99%. Forth, when backing up, pulling back...as you've probably heard, the rear wheels are almost always locked...they say the trick is to quite a bit before you actually need to stop and pull back is you need to fully stop, fully pull the Personal Pace handle up, stop, maybe push it forward again a little to loosen or disengage the propel mechanism, then try to pull back. What a bunch of garbage.

    LCN,
    Long time subscriber here. Love the channel buddy. I went ahead and bought a Toro recycler 22 inch smart Stow with the personal pace because of your reviews. The one thing I thought it had that it actually doesn't is the little blue lever on the right hand side that allows you to walk away from the lawn mower and leave it running although you no longer have it engaged.
    My question is why does mine not have that? Is this some sort of aftermarket part that you buy and then put on? If so where can I get it?
    Love the channel, hope you get back to me, keep up the good work!

    I was mowing the other day and noticed there was a broken spring on the right of the personal pace handle. Is there a way to replace that spring? I'm going to take a guess that it's some kind of a return spring.

    Do you like the Columbia shirts bc of their built in SPF? I was checking them out today at my local outlet store. I may pick up a few once the weather gets a little warmer here.

    My personal pase mower runs well for a few mins. But stalls out after its hot when I try to go fast. It I push on the slider it stalls. If I pull the slide up to the top it runs fine. Anyone else have this problem

    The more I see these vids on the new Toro models, it's tempting to retire my 10 year old Honda mower, and replace it with one of these.

    Hey Allen I really have learned a bunch from you over this year that I have been watching the channel so thank you for that. So I got a question for you. I know you are a Toro guy but what do you think of the Honda with the plastic decks and why did you choose the Toro?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used a Honda mower since I was a kid. Back then I remember it was a great mower and I liked the blade stop feature. Other than that, I have always used Toro since then and am just a brand loyal buyer. Toro has always made very good quality homeowner mowers and I think the Super Recycler is the best "high end" homeowner mower you can get.

    You get nothing like this in the UK. You get a main brand dominating which would be Mountfield. We also have Honda too but they are insanely expensive over here. Ive only ever seen 1 Toro push mower here which the guy imported into the UK, however you will find the larger Toro machines which are made for Golf Course cutting.
