    the M1 IMac has 2 thunderbolt 3 that reaches up to 40Gb/s = 5000MB/s, and 2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 that reaches up to 10Gb/s = 1250MB/s. SanDisk Extreme Pro v2 uses usb and not thunderbolt so this is why on an iMac M1 it can be attached only to the USB 3.1 Gen 2 port that limits its speed.

      Does this go for the M2 MacBook pros as well? Debating over the extreme or extreme pro as well!

      @@fabianj6008 Both the M1 and M2 technical specs call out that they have USB 4 support (up to 40Gb/s). However, I saw another video where the M1 MBP got about 800mb/s I'm assuming the M2 will as well. But maybe I'm wrong. Keep us posted.

      And the results show the bottleneck are the cheap SSD drives in all these external enclosures - lower bitrate data manages with caching, higher bitrates get transfer speeds similar to HDD drives, so not the interface is the limit. It's just that all these garbage videos are made by people who can't even read the results, they just focus on those 2 average speed dials. Aaand SanDisk is among the worst in this regard (SD cards are the other way around, ofc).

    So if you use the new thunderbolt dock from owc and connect that way, would that reach the advertised speeds?

  • @samirachiko
    @samirachiko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    But if you use thunderbolt 4 you can't use the 2000 speed???

    Hi! i just want to ask on your imac 2021 is there an extra USB port on the side that you manage to connect your external hd?

    • @NumberDZ
      @NumberDZ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it has usb C ports on the back side only. You need an adapter to connect.

    And if we use a cable usb-c to thunderbolt 4?? (MacBook pro2021) Can we use the 2000mb speed??

    hello I have the same Sandisk, I use it for Windows but I had thought of passing it on an old Mac 2012 for a conversion on another program for Apple, will this Sandisk be slow on the Mac? So I would like to ask, is it useless that I try risking wasting time and files?
    Long story short, on Mac 2012 the speed stays as slow as I see in the video?

    • @NumberDZ
      @NumberDZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will be kinda slow, you will get similar speed as shown in the video.

    I have this sandisk extreme pro v2 1tb but it was not recognized by ipad pro m1 2021. So i dont know what is the problem. Should i format it? Like which type exFat?

    • @NumberDZ
      @NumberDZ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try formatting the drive to ExFat that should solve the problem.

    Hi to everybody! So I bought two SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD 1TB each for editing my photos from them. I have two MBP's, the M1 2020 and 2016 on Intel and a stationary PC.
    So when I work from my M1 mbp, those drives are getting really really hot, even when idling... But when I work from my other computers, they are warm, or a bit more than warm.
    Do I miss on something or I have a faulty M1 MPB ?
    My other external SSD's are fine, but they are SATA, not NVMe (like those SanDisk's are).

      Okay, so I've read but have been unable to verify that the Extreme Pro V2 runs cooler than slower version when attached to a Mac Studio. Can anyone out there verify this who has both versions?

  • @XeroHertz

    I 100% agree with you, as disappointing as it is for the M1 and other Intel Macs and PCs out there, For a few a dollars more i know i won't have to upgrade or replace this thing for like a decade or so...

      @@NumberDZ I dont understand why the new m1 imacs hardware would be restricting it? It has thunderbolt 3 which is 40Gb/s and the drive is advertised 16Gb/s so wouldnt thunderbolt 3 be able to handle it?

      I use exfat for better compatibility between windows and mac, if you are planning on using it with Mac only you can format apfs

    M1-chip MBP only supports USB 3.1 gen2 and USB 4......The fastest USB C drives are 3.2 gen 2x2 which All Apple products does not support!!!! So it throttles back speeds to USB3.1 gen2 to around max 500mb/s speeds...... You can get an increase of up to around 1000mb/s on and Extl SSD by getting the Sandisk Extreme PRO v2 (USB 3.2 2x2 gen version - must be the latest v2 PRO model - quotes 2000mb/s speeds on the specs) and then buying an Apple genuine branded thunderbolt 3 C-C cable 0.8m long £39 in the uk... must be this cable - It talks to m1 devices correctly and accepts the doubling of speeds (unless you'll only get around 500mb/s W/R speeds). Works on old 2012 iMac and latest M1 Macs - both I get fractionally under 1000mb/s - Hope this helps someone out there. The latest thunderbolt 3 Extl housings and an nvme 980 evo Samsung (build yourself) can get up to 2700mb/s R/W speeds - but this will cost double the outlay unfortunately (around £400 uk). Versus £180 Pro SSD + Apple cable option.
