      @@fishden365 alot of times the jointed jitterbug is difficult to find off the rack...... I usually fish a black one.....I like a stop and go retrieve.
      I have gotten alot of bites using a frog as well but I find the hook arrangements difficult to set......or it's possible that the fish hit the legs or skirt more than the body..... possibly striking behind it.....I don't know.

    PS, I have some of the heddons but I really like the jitter bug, I have 36 of them and caught my PB at night on the black one, also, fish hit black at night because they don't see color as well as dark colors at night.

    • @fishden365
      @fishden365  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the black jitterbug is a killer at night and black contrasts very well against the night sky. You can also modify the hook hangers on the jitterbugs. I do.

    Every single one of those baits catch bass, big bass, in the south. A couple of baits not mentioned, but still can be obtained on ebay, that was used in years past in these parts, is the Lazy Ike and Helin Flatfish. For myself, the frog pattern #4 Lazy Ike was the heavyweight champ then in the numbers of strikes versus catches. For ponds, creeks, and smooth waters the M2 Flatfish in frog or perch pattern was an absolute killer! That side-to-side motion of the flatfish coming through the water slowly was maddening to big bass. I wasn't a great fisherman but these two lures made me one when I presented them properly in the water. I used the older wooden Ikes and Flatfish then, they seem to get better action. Now my baits are all retired as I am and sitting in my three tackle boxes. I used most of the baits shown in this video at one time or another and am very fortunate to have been able to purchase many of my time (50's, 60,s, and 70's). In the 80's and 90's I did not purchase the new fab lures out at that time. Hell, my old baits still caught fish! Honorable mention for me is a pre-60's wooden Bomber. Used that one for deep water fishing off steep banks with plenty cover over-hang to shade holding bass, A brown scale or black color Bomber worked best for me. Thank you for this video as it brought back many great fishing adventures I had early in my life. I have too many to mention here from early years. Many of them I got thru trades with other fishermen and the famous "swap-a-lure" board at a local well known bait shop, where all local fishermen hung out and swap big fish tales. We also kicked around what bait was the best and local politics while sitting on boxes and the couple of folding chairs in the store. All of that is gone now, including most of the club members that were regulars. Just a couple of us left, and so far I have managed to keep my fishing tackle, even though fishing is in my past. Heddon, Helin, South Bend, and Shakespeare were common names and well known. To think, the 50-cents I gave for like new lures off the board, are worth some money nowadays with collectors. Thanks again sir! David Abney

  • @joed3786

    A simple reasoning. Based upon what has been observed on this video. As most of the lures shown, have plain white undersides.
    It can be reasoned that fish are color blind and react to light, shadow, movement, and scent.
    My question is why the artful paint on the top of the top water lures? As the fish shall see the lures from the bottom side.

    Real nice presentation .
    I think to have read somewhere before , that this certain hook attachement with limited hook play is to prevent too much hook rashes on the early lure models first made out of wood.
    They probably just took it over into the plastic age , though hook rash would not lead to water sepage on modern plastic lures , only the paint jobs would become ruined both ways , anyway .
    I'm located in northern Germany , no bass around here , but to me the Spook has proven to be the best topwater lure for local northern pike , at least regarding the lure models in this presentation .

      Sorry to say , but it is not just an easy affair for non-citizen to fish legally over here.
      To obtain the essential Federal Fishing License it requires schooling and afterwards passing an exam , a visitor or a tourist would simply not have the time for it .
      A few of the German states do issue so-called Tourist Fishing Licenses though(in particular the northern states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein), as there is a great deal of tourism and they have a lot of fishing waters) , these do not require schooling and have a limited value of 28 days , I think.
      BUT , apart from that Federal Fishing License(or the Tourist License accordingly) it almost always requires a permission , that allows for fishing particular waters , and many owners of such fishing waters do not issue allowances on Tourist Licenses , because they say , that the holders of these did not pass the exams.
      Also almost all of the German states demand an extra , annual fishery fee to cover fishing-related costs , in the USA such is done by the excise tax on fishing-related items , I guess .
      There are only very few waters , that can be fished without special allowances , but paying the annual fishing fee and holding the Federal Fishing License(or the tourist license , but which ist only valuable in the state of issue) is still essential.
      Maybe the easiest way for someone like you to fish around here would be to go to a so-called "put-and-take" trout pond and buy a days license there(around 25 Euros per two rods). Strictly seen the Federal Fishing License or a tourist license ist still essential there , but the owners usually don't ask for it , as they want to make business .
      But if you are in a state , that issues the Tourist License , this one would be completly legal for such "put-and-take" ponds.
      Or you just make friends with a local fisherman that would take you along using one of his allowed number of rods(most likely 3 but sometimes 2) , not quite legal , though , but who cares , controls are very few?
      Sorry , but Germany is the home of bureaucracy and restrictions .
      And the most remarkable thing is , that the Federal Fishing License(Bundesfischereischein)was first created by the Nazis during the mid-1930s , called "Reichsfischereischein" back then(without the requirement of schooling , though , that one was introduced under pressure of the Green Party during the early 1980's).
      The Nazis created this administrative instrument to be able to better exclude racially and politically unwanted persons from the sport of angling and to better organise the distribution of the angler's catches amongst needy people .
      Today the Federal Fishing License is an instrument of control and also generates money for the single German states by means of the fishery fee .
      Political systems change , but bureaucracy remains the same or even gets worse .
      If you are interested in lures , a couple of years ago I've made a lure picture compilation of international lures , that I owned back then(some I have sold or swapped by now , but most I still have), also many homemade lures amongst these:
      th-cam.com/video/DNumoguTH7E/w-d-xo.html
      "Tight lines" from Schleswig-Holstein , northern Germany , Dieter

    • @fishden365
      @fishden365  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dieter, thank you as I found this to be valuable information. In the US we also have "put and take" trout waters that are privately owned but are quite expensive to fish. Also there is no need as the country is large with many large public lakes and rivers available to fish. I am very interested in your lure compilation and will be watching the video directly. Take care and be well.

    I have one that looks like the Smithwick its green on top, yellow with green speckles on the sides , white on the bottom with red eyes and a red spot near the front of the lure on the bottom. It has a propeller in the front and back and the two screws" bracket with a trebble hook on each one. I caught three small mouth bass on the Salt River in the daytime with an a half an hour. I got the lure and some other ones from my dead Step Grandfathers tackle box while helping with an estate sale. The lure is made out of metal, wood, and paint. It is 4 1/2 inches long and a inch wide most of length of lure.

    And don't forget the one and only Banjo Minnow LOL. My youngest daughter actually bought them for me at a yard sale and as a Daddy we all know it's impossible to say NO to your little girl so I fished with them and I did catch two rock bass and a couple of blue gills and luckily after that she forgot about them and they went to that great tackle box in the sky. What a TV Scam those were.

    I don't agree with your mod using screw EYES because a twisting fish can unscrew the hook, even a few turns will weaken the bait and the hook will pull free, I have considered doing that in the past but opted to abort the idea. Good luck if you go through with the mod, maybe you'll be lucky.

    • @fishden365
      @fishden365  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Raymond. I have never had that happen on dozens of modified spooks. However, I do add epoxy glue to the screw eye when I screw it in. It holds forever that way.

      Thanks for watching Steve. Looks like the meadow mouse and dying flutter are no longer in production. However, that does not mean that you won't find one at an old tackle shop. Other than ebay the best way to go is at fishing flea markets and maybe some on-line sources.

      I change them out with strong I bolts that I also glue in the lure. They are fairly strong out of the package but they cannot swing freely and fish can "wedge" themselves off.
