The screen is stunning and beautiful. I am so delighted that King Charles has chosen Julian of Nowrich's words, 'All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well'. I can't wait to see it used on Saturday.
This is an excellent idea. There was some speculation as to whether the anointing would be televised. I am glad that is will not; it is good for a society to have a sense of the sacred. As soon as I saw this it reminded me of an Orthodox iconostasis!
This reimagining of traditions to fit the modern times is something that most people should take note of I think. Nowadays, it feels as if tradition has no place in this world but I think the coronation will show that this can be done.
Wow, Allan! I almost can't believe how fast you are putting out videos, especially since you are so fastidious about the copious amount of research you put into your content. Each posting has been informative, entertaining, and exactly the kind of video I have been hoping to come across in the lead up to the coronation. Thank you so much for posting! I had been wondering about this particular topic, as it is rumored that King Charles III will be wearing his naval uniform for the ceremony. If this is the case, he will need almost complete privacy to remove his garments for the anointing, so it makes sense that his screen will basically be an entire enclosure. I am also not surprised to see that he is including elements from other veins of the Faith and personnel from outside the nobility and gentry. Personally, I am pleased on both these accounts.
Does anyone think that, if indeed in full dress uniform, King Charles might be anointed only on his head? It would not be possible to see this change to the centuries-old ceremony behind the three-sided screen and perhaps this could be the true reason for its enveloping design.
It is beautiful, I like it more than the one used by Queen Elizabeth. I agree that it being over 100 years old it could be very fragile. Love the symbolism and nod to tradition. I will be watching the coronation from Texas next Saturday, already have my alarm set for it. Here it will be around 4am. Thank you for all your videos on the coronation, after so many years we need a refresher course on. God Bless King Charles III.
Thank you very for this. All your videos on the coronation have been very interesting and I've liked them, but mostly the things you talk about are old ones which I've seen pictures of elsewhere. But this the first time I've seen any picture of the new anointing screen (or even known that there was going to be one), so I was very pleased to find out about it (and to learn the Cosmati pavement will be 'in use' or visible at a coronation for the first time in centuries).
What a beautiful screen! Imagine the many hours and love that went into designing and making it. Everyone who was involved in making and decorating this screen will be able to know that their contributions were a vital aspect of the overall experience. In time to come they’ll be able to tell others that they worked on the team that made the screen. Those are some serious bragging rights! I’m thrilled that Dame Julian of Norwich’s wonderful, hopeful saying is embroidered on the bottom of the screen for all to see. That way a female mystic (my favorite one) can participate through her words in an otherwise nearly all male coronation ceremony. Here in the Western US my friends and I are preparing to stay up all night to watch the coronation which will be 7 hours ahead of us. With so many English ancestors on both sides of my family this will be a vicarious familial experience for me. I thought that the now retired coronation canopy had four embroidered dragons on each side and the angels are on the top. It is an embroidery masterpiece. This new screen, though pretty, is almost gaudy to my eyes. I appreciate the inclusion of all of the nations of the Commonwealth. The use of New Zealand and Australian wool is a nice touch, but what about the wool collected around the UK? The repurposing of the downed tree to make the supports is grand so the tree will be remembered. I apologize if I have offended anyone with my opinion.
Four heraldic eagles on each sides, I can see how they might be seen as dragons. The new screen would not be my choice, but its the best we are going to get, and the imagery is sound.
@@allanbarton It is. I can't imagine how much it would cost in today's economy to recreate it. Beautiful presentation. But the historical Julian of Norwich (1342-c.1416) citation is written not "things" as spoken here. Thankfully, the textile artist got it right. (I double checked.)
As an American I am not much on royalty. But I am a lover of history and much about the coronation is very very old. I am interested in this video as it is extremely informative. It looks like some very good changes as to who holds what and who is in the processions.
Dear sir, yes this is excellently explained. It gives also a completely different unexpected positive few of the new King. Thrust worthy, with great hope and expectation, coming with him and his wife. I'm absolutely not a fan of monarchy, but have to commit, the way how England is handling its relationships with its monarchy is absolutely fantastic and respectfully. It has got my deepest respect and made me a fan of your country. Beside your King, specially because his mother Queen Elizabeth, who laid a great foundation in our relationship between your and our nation, surely also for the whole of the EU, has been a main foundation, where his Majesty King Charles will build on and continuing on.
Thank you for this speedily produced and informative video. Whilst I can appreciate the great skill of the artist designer and of the embroiderers and other craftsmen I must be the odd man out amongst your viewers and say that I very much regret this departure from the traditional form of the canopy. If the one made in 1902 was fragile a replacement could have been made. I think the screen , however attractive, is a significant and unnecessary change. I agree Coronations evolve and adapt their form and ceremonial but this is a change that does not appear to be rooted in historic precedent and is, in my opinion, one that is to be regretted.
I saw a couple of pictures of the screen and I hoped you’d do a video about it. Thanks for the research and detail. I think this coronation will be surprisingly relevant to modern life!
The anointing has always been the most sacred part of the ceremony, but has there always been this emphasis on shielding it from view? Do we know how ii was done in medieval times?
One reason I ask this is because I have seen medieval depictions of the anointing of European kings that show it being done in front of witnesses without any sign of canopies or screens. Also, the Biblical account of the anointing of Solomon from which the rite derives seems to indicate it was done before a large congregation of witnesses. To tell the truth, I was wondering if this emphasis on privacy doesn't have more to do with a post-medieval sense of fastidiousness about having oil (even if it is consecrated and pleasantly aromatic) poured on them in public that's akin to the monarchs no longer washing the feet of poor people in imitation of Christ on Maundy Thursday and distributing money instead. Even though, as Allen Barton the Antiquary as pointed out in his excellent video on the topic, servants from the royal household washed the feet of the poor people before the monarch ritually re-washed them.
This actually feels very down to earth... of course I'm sure it was very costly, but many local churches have handmade banners and panels hung up on their walls just like this, though more crudely made. It doesn't feel gaudy and ostentatious, but very modest and unfussy, despite the beauty of the craftsmanship.
As far as I have ever been aware, processional canopies, baldacchinos and the like are not primarily intended to obscure the view of the object covered but are instead intended to convey the holiness or solemnity of the thing covered. Therefore, a canopy makes perfect sense for the anointing whereas an anointing screen seems to be a modern obsession with shielding the sovereign from view completely. Does something like that have any precedent?
I wonder, what happens to retired pieces of coronation ritual? Are they stored away or held in a museum? I'd hate to think of them destroyed or some other such thing.
Aidan Hart (then Brother Aidan) was commissioned to 'write' (i.e., paint) 12 icons of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church for St John's C of E Parish Church, Clevedon, N Somerset, where they may be seen.
Note: the roses are white and red for the houses of York and Lancaster. They are the same as the ones on a necklace found in a field several years back.

Thank you so much for the outstandingly clear explanation, I might ask your permission to quote your video and words in my upcoming PhD graduation essay about embroidered liturgical works of art.
Interesting. I was reading the Coronation Order of Service earlier after the Church of England inadvertently released it a few hours in advance of the embargoed time of 10pm (it's now been pulled again!) - and the whole service looks as if it follows the traditional Coronation rite quite closely (with some minor updating), despite some of the crazy over the top speculation that has appeared in certain organs of the press in recent weeks.
I still don’t love the design but the idea was a bigger success than I anticipated. Especially with such a dramatic musical accompaniment, the screens focused attention on the transformative aspect of the ritual. Charles Windsor replaced by Carolus Rex.
I guess with this screen, Charles could wear his uniform. I have seen costumes made that are very easy to slip off and on. I wonder if he'll have his naval uniform modified.
The original canopy is from Catholic symbolism. When the Eucharist, being the body of Jesus, is moved off an altar to another location, a canopy is over it at all times. Similar canopies were also used for the Pope and other high ranking nobles when they moved about. You could think of this as being similar to Victorian women with their umbrellas. Quite simply, these cultural symbols are lost on modern people, so I am not surprised they'd go with a novel innovation of screens with iconography.
Atleast the old canopy allowed people to see the anointing. This new one completely shields the King. What is it that is been done in secret. Jesus lived and died in public. I am cautious of things done in secret.
So where did the rumour come from that the King was going to have a window cut in the canopy so the TV cameras could zoom in on the anointing from above? Having said that, now that the whole proceeding is open from above, what will stop the camera that will no doubt be up high?
Where else but the media?? They make it up and assume because they do not know - but they NEVER apologise when what they say is not right. 🤬 As for the cameras, everything is agreed by the King beforehand so there will be no 'sneaky pictures'.

Yea, definitely not a fan.
Beautiful 🙏🕊️
Absolutely beautiful
It worked well on the day, and answered my question whether this screening would be done as was previous.
Thank you for the information. It was good to see Canada on the screen.
I'll be watching from Canada, God save the King.
Marvellous!
It reminds me of American Catholic Churches in the 1970s. Only the guitar accompaniment is lacking.
this is certainly a beautiful example of English needle work
I saw a couple of pictures of the screen and I hoped you’d do a video about it. Thanks for the research and detail. I think this coronation will be surprisingly relevant to modern life!
I think so too- glad you appreciated the video!
Nice job!
@@michaelmontagu3979 They carry the flags, I think. The canopy was traditionally carried by knights of the order of the garter
God save the King and let every thing be well with the Coronation day! Let no weapon formed against the King and the Kingdom prosper.
This actually feels very down to earth... of course I'm sure it was very costly, but many local churches have handmade banners and panels hung up on their walls just like this, though more crudely made. It doesn't feel gaudy and ostentatious, but very modest and unfussy, despite the beauty of the craftsmanship.
I completely agree, you've hit the nail on the head.
Thank you,Allan
Aidan Hart (then Brother Aidan) was commissioned to 'write' (i.e., paint) 12 icons of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church for St John's C of E Parish Church, Clevedon, N Somerset, where they may be seen.
This is truly lovely, I hope I will be able to watch since I have no TV
Fantastically informative!
Note: the roses are white and red for the houses of York and Lancaster. They are the same as the ones on a necklace found in a field several years back.
It really was spectacular. I had no idea a new one had been made, and when they brought it out, it was captivating and worked so well.
King Charles has said that he respects all religions…. Christian’s, sec, Jewish Muslim….he has my respect
😉 respects all, believes in none 😂 ... supports new world order and religion, thus does not accept objective truth and reality.. only subjective... all for show and virtue signalling..🤷
For years he has sought out the benevolent common ground between people of different faiths or none. Acknowledging "All that is good is God" should be enough.
That is beautiful!
ALL SHALL BE WELL AND ALL MANNER OF THINGS SHALL BE WELL! THE HEAVENS ARE VERY PLEASED INDEED!!!
Many years to His Majesty The King and HM The Queen.
Beautiful! ❤️🇳🇿
Thank you so much for the outstandingly clear explanation, I might ask your permission to quote your video and words in my upcoming PhD graduation essay about embroidered liturgical works of art.
Of course, with pleasure.
Beauty
Everything will be in order after this is over.
Thanks!
My pleasure!
As long as Jesus Christ is central as He was with Elizabeth ii . Not a nod to the false religions.
There is no link in the description to pre-order the special coronation magazine. Will you add it, please?
I've added one now. www.antiquarystore.com/collections/the-antiquary-magazine/products/the-antiquary-coronation-special-2023
How beautiful it is.I expect a few backhanders and tax exemptions were involved,however.Maybe.
Atleast the old canopy allowed people to see the anointing. This new one completely shields the King. What is it that is been done in secret. Jesus lived and died in public. I am cautious of things done in secret.
How many workers and how many hours to complete them?
What about the look like 80 blue leaves on the ends, what does that represent?
I thought it was (really) ridiculous. A new canopy would have been more appropriate.
