Thanks for all your awesomeness. I love how you show some issues and how you find a way to work around them, which is realistic. As you may know a lot of tutorials just so the products working properly and most of the time that is not the case. I have learned more from you vids then I did reading the manual twice.
Wow! What an incredible compliment. That's actually the inspiration for my channel: to share things that I wish I'd known before buying :) You're right regarding expectations: out of all my devices, only my iConnect Midi 4+ does exactly what I expected it to without any funny limitations.
Cool! I'm really happy it helped. Keep it mind that OctaEdit software allegedly can do a proper MIDI file import. Haven't checked that yet, but hopefully I will soon.
Just to clarify; At present OctaEdit can not import/export Midi to/from the Octatrack. It is something that I have already built a "Proof of Concept" for, however there is a lot of different scenarios to work through before it is something that could be released publicly. So on the "maybe" list, but no guarentees at the moment.
Hey mate, thanks for the video. Im trying this with my MK 2. I have USB from my computer to the TM-1 into my Octatrack. all my settings are set as the video instructs. The Octatrack is in EXT mode when I press play on Ableton. When I press the record and play button my Octatrackit seems to start triggering the sequencer, then when I play this midi clip on Ableton it does not record any midi triggers to my Octatrack. Do you have any idea if its still possible with the MK2?
nice, hmmm how about recording midi from an other maschine ? like the(Döpfer) MAQ16/3 that I like for random stuff otherwise it looks not so hard to print those few notes in OT by hand when you know what you want.
i cannot make my MK2 to be armed for recording and wait for signal from ableton to start (as seen in this tutorial) when i press record and play together for LIVE RECORDING the sequencer starts to run. does anybody know how to avoid it? and thanks a lot for this tutorial-ace!!!:)
Hey! I have a big problem and don t know where to reach out, so I am asking here. I want ableton to send midi transfer stop/start signal to my octatrack mk1. I can t get it to ''play'', but when I play with the button on the OT and stop in ableton, it registers the ''stop''. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
I don’t have my ot anymore but I remember that if you’re synced to external clock and transport (sync) you might need to press play on the ot first. If all is set up properly the ot won’t play but will arm to „listen” for midi sync. Then when you press play on ableton, your ot might sync. Try this, but I won’t guarantee it working as my memory is not what it used to be 😎😎😎
Thanks a lot for such a quick reply! I finally figured it out, the process was weird as hell... Basically the ot did what it wanted :)) Ty again for the help and awesome vids, learned a lot from you. Keep it up!
Hi, do you have to be in Chromatic mode for this to work ? i managed get the midi notes from the computer to go thru the Octa track and then into the synth, but when i record into the OT, it transposes the notes weirdly and it also quantises the notes wrong. I'm aware this thread is from 2 years ago but some of us are still trying to work this out, :) maybe there are better implementations out there in the mean time ? thanks a lot for the insight! this should not be that hard ...
No need to be in chromatic, but you have to make sure that the trigs are not overlapping (no pedal notes). When it comes to quantization, I don't remember what I did to get it right. If you're using Ableton experiment with "track delay" (the D icon in the sidebar) and turning Octatrack quantization on and off. And I agree; it shouldn't be that difficult.
Great tutorial) But I cant record in realtime from ableton in proper way. I set clock and transport in "recieve" mode, but octa still shows internal tempo and switches to EXT only when I pres play in ableton. When I push rec+play, octatrack starts its own seq. I have 1.25H os
It can be an issue with your midi setup. Make sure "SYNC" is active for your midi interface output, then press stop and first press rec+ play and then hit play on Ableton. Should do the trick.
9:40 Chain patterns? Maybe record on separate tracks with pattern scaling mode set to per track? I haven't found a way to merge tracks so maybe this would just be a waste of a track.
Great video! However, if you press the Record and Play buttons simultaneously Playback starts and it is difficult to record the MIDI message at the correct timing. Your OT is not recorded when you press both recording and playback It seems to be recorded when you press play button on Ableton. What settings should I set?
Maybe this changed with a recent OS update, but at the time of recording this video, with transport sync set to external MIDI the OT wouldn't start until I pressed play in Ableton. I'll check if that's still the case now.
The only thing I can't have properly setup is the ext sync so that when I hit play in abelton it plays the octatrack. If I hit Rec and Play in the octa, it just starts. hahaa sheeit
Do you have transport activated on the OT and sync ticked on Ableton. You will know that it's set up correctly if the first trig lights up but the sequencer doesn't start after you press play on the OT.
Yup, did all of that. I'm actually receiving chaining from the daw -> OT -> Jd-xi. And if I play what's on abelton I get sound on the JD Xi. If I hit play and rec on the OT I get recording in the OT. The thing is that I can't get it to get into realtime rec mode so that everything is in sync from the start. I've tried everything and this is a deal breaker :( I've seen like 3 people with the same problem and 2 of them fixed with without knowing how.
Nice one. Cheers for this. I've hit issues relating to resolution when altering the pattern length to accommodate longer phrases.. You seen to quickly lose the ability to record 32 / 16ths
For live it's only hardware for music and a MacBook for visuals. Hoping to sync them up via midi in the future (probably Resolume) for a full audio-video sync.
I don't own one yet, so it's hard to tell with 100% certainty, but I don't believe there's sample polyphony on the DIGITAKT either. It stems from one sample per trig philosophy. For polyphonic sampling you have to go with the MPC Live (for new devices) or just buy an oldschool sampler like a Yamaha A3000.

thank you for this, excellent work around the limitation of importing MIDI files directly.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
been searching for the solution for months, this really helpful, Cheer!

Thanks for the clarification. I reckon that it must be an extremely hard functionality to implement due to OT's trig architecture.
How can I know it is really night?
You really can't. You're doomed to live in uncertainty for the rest of your life!
at night there is a blanket covering the sun. during the day the birds sing a sweet song.

Same here!
@@vehemintMojito it doesn't work with mk2. you have to start both things together.it needs a bit of practice, but nothing hard,i work like that;)

@@caroelia good question
If only the OT would record multiple midi tracks at the same time… the digis do it.
This is exactly what I needed.

Interesting. I'm assuming the issue is with the DAW rather than the OT. What USB-Midi interface do you use?
When I record this, there is a latency of 3-4 steps in the midi
how do you fix this?
You can try messing with the delay compensation on tracks and also, be sure to have the quantization on.
Nice one. Cheers for this. I've hit issues relating to resolution when altering the pattern length to accommodate longer phrases.. You seen to quickly lose the ability to record 32 / 16ths
You're totally correct. That's one of the limitations of the step architecture. Analog RYTM manages to mitigate that by using conditional trigs.
Thanks. I thought that was the case good to check I hadn't lost it ! Great set of vids btw. Keep me entertained anyway !
HI, thanks for all tutorials, can you make a video explain the Function Qrec and Qpl, please.
Thanks!
I'm actually working on a pickup machine tutorial right now. Already have the Qrec figured out. Still can't figure out the Qpl :)

Thanks! This one was hard to record :)

For live it's only hardware for music and a MacBook for visuals. Hoping to sync them up via midi in the future (probably Resolume) for a full audio-video sync.
just in this process now with Rytm, Octatrack, Avalon & Resolume.. How did you get on?
Awesome!
Is that fixed in mk2 ?
Haven't tried it, but I don't believe it has.
Hi! Great Tips!!! Can a plug a Midi keyboard to Play/Record chromatic samples? What about polyphony? Thanks my man!!!
Yes, you can with a 2-octave limitation, though. Sadly, no polyphony :(
