Used to stay in the Ban Sabai bungalows before the Inthira hotel was built and watched the cows walking back and fore on the other side. Nice info video, good update on Vang Vieng. At least your bars with drinks are open. In Thailand even restaurants that can open cannot sell alcohol. Bars are still shut so Laos is better for staying open during this virus.

      Yep, the alcohol rule in restaurants here in Thailand is bizarre. Half the people who go to a restaurant, go to relax and have a beer or glass of wine...it’s the only rule that makes no sense to me.

    Hey guys,, i loved this vid ,because it was love and life. You guys were SO happy getting out of town for a little roadie to V.V. and then to have the rug jerked out from under you when you got there. It was damn near a tear jerker! That road has deep and unbelievable suck factor. Those mountains are as gorgeous as ever,, but progress does not improve the looks of the mtns. At the very most,,maybe an improved walking path ,, but a road? Did the chinese have something to do with it? Maybe they are building a giant mega resort on that side of the river. I hope not! Yeah this one was an emotional roller coaster. From the happy departure ,, to the pandemic changes in V.V. I could feel your pain,, becase i do the same when my fave places change. I think we need to do a t-shirt with a giant chinese branded vacuum sucking up old Lao style wood building and those gorgeous mountains. With the words,,,"progress sucks the beauty and life out of EVERYTHING" now in lao and mtnman say so! Thank you all for the trip and the imformation. Hang in there my friends. Quick virus update,, in the last week weve had 23 new cases in this county, most active cases in Montana. What can i say ,,people are stupid,, the same as view ruining ,building changing ruiner are. That is how you destroy a character of a small town. There is literally nothing on these side of the river what would need a proper street.... probably they build it as a fast track to north vang vieng.... they better build a second lane at the namsong bridge... would be much more useful.

    Question ❔ is will the railway bring Chinese tourists in, or will they go past vv at 200 mph. Like the road they built between Thailand 🇹🇭 and Vietnam 🇻🇳 it brought only traffic passing thru. Another place in Asia spoilt by development.

    • @NowinLao
      @NowinLao  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter. Yes. Vang Vieng is a designated stopping point for the high speed rail with a large platform being built. Along with a huge dual carriage way from Vientiane under construction also to be opened at around the same time (end 2021). With the new road coming from the south, why could they have not put a new river crossing on the southern end also and left the river front alone... Doesn't make sense driving past the town to cross the river on the northern side only to drive back down along the river front.. 🤔
      I'm afraid you're right mate... destroyed 😐

    Hi Todd local people living in the villages on the opposite of the Nam Song River from Vang Vieng Town have suffered for many years due to the hiked up prices to cross the wooden bridge which is privately owned local people simply cannot afford 15,000 Kip to cross the river each time for many years local people have been up in arms demanded government intervention hence the reason for the new road the government funded the cost of a new bridge a little further uptown which is free to cross for everyone hence the reason for the new road it’s also allowed other business to set along the road side giving additional opportunities to locals I’ve lived in Vang Vieng for quite some time and too be honest I’ve witnessed a lot of happy local people if the private bridge owners lowered there prices nothing would have changed as your aware the new railway will also be finished late 2021 that’s another story however it will hopefully bring much needed additional business into Laos let’s see mate...!!!

    • @NowinLao
      @NowinLao  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So putting the bridge 2km upstream and building a road right along the river front destroying one of the most scenic views in Laos was the only option..? I don't think so. The majority of people coming into Vang Vieng by car will be from the south (Vientiane). Just like the new road entering the township of Vang Vieng is. Why not build the new bridge on the southern side near the new road and leave the river front as is.
      You want the tourists to travel there to help the local economy? ...then don't destroy the reason they are drawn there in the first place.

    • @colmhaughey7001
      @colmhaughey7001 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes agree the new road is an eye sore and yes we both know there’s far better options in terms of a location for a bridge I was simply pointing out the demands of the local people needing free access across the Nam Song can’t say too much about why & who decided on what’s been finally constructed there is another across before you reach Vang Vieng but it’s quite a drag on a bad road okay with a 4x4 or motorcycle but difficult in a standard saloon car
      Cheers...!!!’

    I have been VV 6 times. Whenever I went there, I was disappointed on something new. Yeah they built new road across Namsong river, destroyed my favorite view. Ugly overpass high-speed railroads? I bet Chinese did that. Sakura is closed(hope not gone), the good old Thavonsouk hotel is gone, I heard. Well, what can I say? Nothing last forever. I don't blame Lao people.

    • @NowinLao
      @NowinLao  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, exactly how I feel. Everytime it was something else disappointing, never something positive. Such a beautiful place and each time i visited was something that ruined that beauty a little more. Besides the road, my biggest gripe about the place was building that big ugly Amari hotel right on the river front shading most of the town from the magnificent view. Like yourself, no, i don't blame the Lao people. Most that we have spoken to do not like these changes either, but somebody is to blame for such poor decision making. Yes, new access was needed across the river but destroy one of the best views on Laos in the process....really. As one subscriber said...VV is quickly becoming a fly over city. Losing its appeal 😔
      Thanks for your input 🙏
