I am down under ....in Australia and ride an XR 650L .Have only just now caught up with your wonderful adventure. I used to be adventurous when I was in my twenties but never took it to this level. Watching your exploits makes me want to be there and do it. What are you riding? A ran into a couple of guy's here in Oregon that had done the TAT on Yamaha TW 200's. Not my choice, as I own one but to each his own. I'd take my Suzuki 650 and finish the eastern sections that I missed. Cheers.

Thats why I included the map at the beginning of each day. Shows my tracks for the day. 6:10 is the beginning of that day. I end in Castle Dale, and 12:21 was the last clip I recorded for the day.
Eric, totally rad series. I'm from Canada and a buddy and I want to do the TCAT (same sorta deal). I noticed you used a V-Strom in your last series but opted for the XRL here. Can you explain why? If you could do it again, would you stick with a more streetable bike or do it with this thing again? (I'm looking around for a new adv style bike and XRLs are on my list). Great content though! Very different trips require very different bikes! I think the XR was perfect for the TAT, and I think the V-strom was perfect for the Alaska trip. Alaska (95% highway) TAT (10% highway, 30% paved backroads, 60% dirt). If its 40% or more dirt a 21" front would be recommended. In my opinion.
Hell ya bro Utah has colorado walkin its lunch box,zion national park,,bryce canyon,thors hammer, the trails are so smooth with a hard pack clay and huge switch backs along with 14,000 ft climbs will leave you with your jaw wide open!.oregon is the cats ass to!.
Just found your series and plan to watch it all. I have a question about the carb jetting on your xr. What jet sizes are you using and have you ever run into an altitude that they didn't work with? I'm going to upgrade my exhaust to either a Lexx MXe or a DG V2 so I will probably have to rejet for that. My home elevation is 1000ft, does anyone have any recommendations for jetting for reliability and what jets would you run at those higher elevations in the rockies? We're planning on doing some western rides
I believe it's a 155 main jet. It is a FCR39mm carb I got off Ebay years ago. It was at 165 I believe, which was perfect for sea level, but I worried about 12,000ft. I had my mechanic lean it out, party for mileage, mostly for altitude buffer. My thought was even if its not perfect at sea level, it would be okay at high elevations. But it was too lean, so it wasn't great with cold starts or idling unless oil was 190+f. Worked great at the top, I think it is best at 8,000ft with its current jetting. The vast majority of the trail is under 3000ft however. So moral of the story, fuel injection.
Eric, great videos!! This summer I'm planning a TAT Ride from Trinidad to Port Orford on Sam's 2014 tracks heading west and heading back east on his 2017 tracks through Idaho. Looks like you are about where the tracks split going to Idaho. Wondering if you are using the 2017 tracks and what you plan on doing once you get to Port Orford? Eric, I'm thinking the ticking noise might be valve rockers worn out. See: V-Strom garage xr650l top end ticking. That should not be a real expensive repair since the engine does not have to come out of the bike.
Yes I did! I wished I had the paper maps when on the trip (or a pdf version) so I could have planned the day a little better. But otherwise just following the gps track worked great!
4.7 gallons, worst I ever got was 40mpg. Best was 52. Averaged around 48. Depends on the terrain and how aggressive I ride. So that's about 225 miles. I tried not to let it get over 200. I also had 2L of extra fuel.
California pass (in Colorado) 12,960ft. I had my mechanic adjust it so it was really lean in FL 0ft, it was perfect around 3-5k ft and still ran quite well at 12k ft!
Cool videos! My best in sight so far to Utah and Colorado portions of the TAT. The only problem is you keep talking about what gear is good for the temperature and conditions but you never mention what time of year you’re riding or how hot it is.

Anyway, you may remember I told you I was riding my Yamaha on the TAT in August 2019 when a deer ran directly in front of my bike and ended my trip. I broke my wrist and a finger. I was 4 miles from Mississippi when it happened. Anyway, I plan on taking my bike down there by Uhaul this year and starting from Mississippi to finish the trip. I will be riding my 2012 Honda XR650L this time. It looks like your bike is doing great on the trails. One more question Eric. I was using GPS Kevin's tracks. I was unhappy with the amount of roads I had to travel on in Tennessee. There were some nice dirt trails, but it just seemed like Kevin's tracks had me taking too many asphalt roads. How were Sam's tracks in Tennessee? Thanks for the info.

Depends on a lot of things. How many days in motels, paid camping, wild camping? Getting to the start, getting the bike home, getting you home. Food, gear, motorcycle maintenance, upgrades, luggage. Mosko Moto has the best luggage for those kinds of bikes for sure. You have 2 awesome bikes and they would be perfect for a trip like this! (as long as they are both plated) You have to have 150+ miles range, 200 miles range is much better however. Buy the maps from Sam, digital plus paper maps. Safe travels!
I enjoy watching your videos. But one thing that really bothers me is with all those lakes, rivers and streams your passing. You don't have any fishing gear. Fresh caught Trout oven an open fire. YUM,YUM. and even if you don't like fish just throw them back.

You had lost 1.5 quarts of oil suddenly. Your engine sounded bad. To me, your engine sounded like you might be loosing a rod. Now, with no explanation but telling us about how you "laundered" all of the oil out of your luggage, you pick up as nothing was ever wrong. What has happened to your motorcycle to make it possible for you to continue your journey? Don't you think that is important to us? As of now you have failed all of your followers. We have been faithful to you, please be faithful to us.

Your trip was epic enough for me to purchase an old XR650L myself. One question: did you follow Sam's maps to the letter?

Not too much sand, although I grew it riding in sand. So it wouldn't have stuck out to me unless it was many miles of it.
