    Fun Fact: Jean Vander Pyl not only provided the voice of Wilma -- she did the vocals for Pebbles Flintstone as well (mostly "wa-wa goo bla-bla"). In that cereal ad which told the entire Christmas Carol story in just under 30 seconds, Pebbles says "Be nice, Daddy -- Santa's watching!" and "Bless us, every one." That was Jean!
    She also continued to voice Wilma in other Pebbles commercials that were made after 1994. But I agree that "A Flintstones Christmas Carol" was the last major role for Wilma.

    I gotta say, I was impressed with the adaptation of the story itself--the way it adapted Dickens' dialogue just enough to make it comprehensible to kids but not so much as to dilute its meaning, much like the very first adaptation I ever read (one of those Great Illustrated Classic editions they gave away at McDonald's for a promotion in 1979). And this family-friendly adaptation actually includes the scene where Scrooge faces his own dead, shrouded body! If they'd left out the framing device (or at least kept it to a minimum, as the Magoo version did), we'd have an impeccable adaptation that bridges the gap between child and adult viewers.

  • @maxpower7113
    @maxpower7113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    First of all, this is my favorite adaptation of a Christmas Carol. Second, what are you taking about before Christ? The Flintstones takes place in a post-apocolyptic future where those who escaped like the Jetsons live high above earth as opposed to those left below like the Flintstones.

  • @parodyerrorfilms7722

    There are at least SEVEN Flintstones Christmas stories.
    Two during the original series.
    A Christmas record.
    Two Cocoa Pebbles ads
    A Flintstone Family Christmas
    A Christmas Carol
    Plus they appear in Yogi's All-Star Comedy Christmas Caper.
    Plus a few comics with new Christmas theme stories.
    And yeah, over on my channel, we covered this movie in depth. We do at least ones Flintstones related video per year.

  • @joshmontemayor1212
    @joshmontemayor1212 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, the Flintstones getting Christmas episodes & specials is where the word "modern" from the show's theme song comes into play. You see, The Flintstones celebrate Christmas the same way that we do.

    This is one version of the story I have yet to watch. This year I decided to marathon every single A Christmas Carol I have and including Scrooged, it totaled 24 versions. I'll have to check out this 'Christmas Carol. By far, my favorite animated version so far is the very dark 24 minute one from 1971 with Alistair Sim voicing Scrooge.

  • @michaelharrington4503

    This was not the only version of the story to be done by Hanna-Barbera. There was another version that also featured the Flintstones' Space Age counterparts, the Jetsons, that you should also review. In 1985, more than twenty years after it was canceled (after only one season), they revived and continued "The Jetsons", producing several more episodes until 1987. Nine years before the Flintstones version, there was produced an episode of "The Jetsons" called "A Jetsons Christmas Carol", which wasn't a special or anything, just a regular episode of the show. As you might expect, George Jetson assumes the role of Bob Cratchit while Mr. Spacely is Scrooge, although no one's names are changed for the story; they just use their own regular names. Of course, Spacely has George and the rest of the Spacely Sprockets staff working Christmas Eve, but of course, also, Spacely is visited by the ghosts of Christmases past, present and future (all futuristic takes, naturally), after which he vows to change his ways. Interestingly, the Jetsons' dog Astro assumes the role of Tiny Tim after accidentally swallowing a gear from chasing and accidentally a robot cat (veterinary care is apparently not available on Christmas). You really should take a look at this episode in the future.

    I have an easier time with the Flintstones celebrating Christmas if I have one of two mindsets. That there was a Bedrock equivalent of Jesus, since they had a Stone Age counterpart to everyone. Apparently even Charles Manson, which Flintstone Family Christmas bafflingly mentions. Or to subscribe to the theory that they aren't really prehistoric cavemen, but rather the attempts to restart society after a nuclear war literally knocks the planet back into the Stone Age, thus giving them reference points to our modern pop culture.

    • @Alejandroigarabide
      @Alejandroigarabide 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "They're a modern stone age family", which means it might be set in modern times, only in a world where prehistoric creatures never went extinct and cave-men fashion never went out of style.

    Setting aside the absurdity of the Flintstones, who live in prehistoric times, celebrating Christmas, let alone knowing what A Christmas Carol is, this adaptation is... alright, I guess. I don't know if I particularly care for it, I'm not a huge fan of Fred's behavior in it, not to mention the contrived scenario of Fred not knowing he had to pick up baby Pebbles, but that aside, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I do like how the "Bedrock Bug" forces Wilma to do a lot of extra roles, and she and Fred do some great improv when Fred tries to make up with her during the play itself.

    There’s a theory that the flinstones actually takes place in the far future- this was coined by the Jetsons crossover where Elroy developed a time machine to take them to the future. It was acceptable to think that there was a mistake and they went back in time- but people began thinking that it actually worked and took them to a post apocalyptic time where things have regressed, but maintained basic commodities. The dinosaurs could be argued as kind of a Jurassic park instance where they are decendents of cloned animals, biologically engineered monsters for the war that caused the situation…. Or simply animals that actually began evolving during the jetsons time (as it’s stated that no one lives on the surface anymore due to pollution.) so with that wild theory in mind, the idea of Christmas is valid as it’s something that has happened, but a very, very long time ago.
