Hear his solo from Close to You from the same concert... I was there and it was the peak of the performance imo. That or his improvised version of You and I.
@Hybo last time I checked reading notes wasn't really a requirement for musicians. Meanwhile your comment imply that you have some capacity to read notes, which isn't something most non-musicians can say
I don't think "there's no reason for you to be alive" is the same as "life has no meaning". I understand the former more as "there is nothing concrete thing whose consequence is that you are alive".
@@viktorajstein he meant that there is no objective, given, pre-outlined meaning; you create your own meaning in life, and you can make it be whatever you want.
anyone knows how Jacob Collier played the drum/percussion at 6:48 ? Need to know the theory or technique, or just some explanation of it. It seems like duplet but also off the tempo, idk..(sorry bad english)
He was doing a tuplet swing, which is referred to as "drunken rhythm". Jacob uses a lot of these drunken rhythms - check out Close to You and With the Love in My Heart.
@@grudman7885 Ohh thankyouu man, i finally got it, after re watch this in 0,5x speed. The capital Rs are accents, the small r's are ghost notes (soft) and obviously he's got a groove going between the floor Tom and the Snare. If you spend some time practicing it slowly, you can get it- the pattern is pretty simple actually, it's just the shock and sudden spastic contrast of throwing that in there when he did that made it so exciting musically. And he's playing it as he says in the intro, with the enthusiasm and playfulness of a child (and the timing and finesse of a professional musician as well, of course).
I was trying to figure this out the other day and all i can say is the main sound engineer i think the Spaniard just improvised and dampened Jacobs voice at that moment he says underneath the surface. i cant see any thing in Jacobs hand and hes sitting so no pedals...i think it was preplanned when he brings up funk thats the cue
I listened to it again and I think the cameraman just adjusted his grip and muffled the microphone since the ambient sound of the room sounded different too
@@magicomerv i was at the show it happened in real time u can also hear the crowd react. I can only figure it was choreographed in his banter about new material
I'm assuming this recording doesn't do the song justice, but I appreciate you recording this regardless. Jacob and the band are amazing! Can't help but be drawn to his creations.
the words aren’t the point of his music. the instrumentals alone tell their own story. the lyrics are kind of an afterthought when listening to his music.
Marino Scarpa I just don’t agree with the view that there’s no meaning in life that he expressed before the tune. Especially from a person like Jacob who creates such rich meaning in his own music.
@@purringcamel567 i don't think he mean it in a nihilistic way, i think he meant that we should live life like kids do: without intellectualizing everything but instead just living each moment as it is. Basically in a playful way not taking It too seriously
Unfortunately, his music lacks emotional depth. People are impressed by his skills just like they are impressed by fireworks. He doesn't show any true personality, any vulnerability, he doesn't even sing with his own authentic voice. There is no narrative, no story that touches you, that you would carry in your heart after listening, that teaches you about yourself, and helps you to grow. With his extremely high level of technicality, he manages to distract people from his and their own emptiness.
wow. you really aren't hearing it are you. have you listened to Home? or Overture? His arrangement of All Night Long? if you have and this is what you take away then I genuinely feel sorry for you.
I almost agree that in this case. Maybe this performance is more "showman" look a like, but not in the entire song, there is sweet moments of truly explorations, or at least a reflect of his days in privacy, explorating. And totally not in all of his songs, check more and listen care.
And this is highly subjective, maybe your brain identify "feeling" with diferents kind of gestures, colours, timbres, etc, who knows, that man make me cry and feel joy some times with his music, so at least for me this don't lack emotional depth, not at all.
That talkbox solo is from another plane of existence... what an amazingly talented dude.

This guy has so much confidence. I love it. He can sit on his grand piano.
Man - I hope he releases a live version of this song some day. This is more epic than the album version. (And the album version is pretty darn epic)
Mississippi Dave experienced it live and I can‘t agree more!
So excited for volumes 2 3 and 4

@Hybo fair enough. Anyway my point was that it was a silly thing to ask since overwhelming majority of his fan base are musicians
god I love this guy. What a genuine, outwardly and effortlessly genius person
Thank you for capturing all of Jacob’s LA shows! It’s wonderful to have a memento of each concert.
Yooooooo, I was no where ready for that talk box. I feel like the song “djesse” is a little underrated, and hearing it done like this was just amazing

This is a Collier line train to Djesse volumes 2, 3 & 4.
