  • You may know that I get great enjoyment out of finding new brands to bring to your attention. Alternatives to the status quo which may be a better fit for your needs. After all, most small brands wont be found in department stores or even at small boutiques, so they tend to get overshadowed by companies with a larger budget and more market share.
    Tom Beckbe is a perfect example of this, offering a competitive option to Barbour and Filson with their excellent Tensaw waxed jacket.

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

    I was looking for a nice waxed jacket as an outer layer. Something I could ware out clearing brush or hunting, but nice enough to ware into town if my wife wanted to go out for the evening. One of your other videos convinced me that Tom Beckbe was the way to go. A few months owning it and I couldn't thank you enough. I love it. Fantastic outdoor work jacket, and whenever I'm out and about I've had multiple people comment and ask what brand it was. Thanks again for recommending this wonderful jacket.

    I love my Tensaw jacket! I’ve had it a few years and originally used it as a casual jacket. Eventually I got it out in the woods as a hunting jacket and love it even more. The more it wears in the better it looks. It handles the briars and brush awesome and keeps light rain, mist, and the spray from the boat at bay nicely!

    In this day and age, I know a subscription to a paper magazine is crazy. However, I smile every time Garden and Gun hits my mailbox. It’s here that I learned about TB a few years ago. At the time they had one item...this jacket. Maybe a hat too. Great company. Appears to have a great culture to go along with it.

      That's the thing about Barbour. They build to last & their repair & maintenance service will keep a jacket going for decades. The company is still family owned & they haven't changed their high quality ethos when other brands have become a bit "fast fashion". One of the few genuine Buy It For Life brands out there. Although I like the look of this Tensaw style Carl is reviewing. It looks sophisticated with impressive detailing.

      I’m a Barbour man. When I see Tom Beckbe, their style and marketing depictions, they appear to be trying way too hard to achieve a quintessentially British look. The Beckbe Tensaw jacket looks like it was taken straight from Barbour’s design book.

It's been on my short list past 2 years, but have a chance to get a new Mackinaw Lined Cruiser in Black that is calling my name. I can justify purchase easier by getting more months out of it per season.

    I have something like this I purchased from Or is about a year ago. Except it has a nice hood attached. I think it was called the Wescox Price was about $549 it was a Collaboration made with Barbour and Orvis Jacket, I inded up paying about $178 with all the Discount and discount code added, I thought it was an error from $549. Purchase went through and Jacket "Wescox" is now in my Arsenal.
    Ar almost same price as the Jacket your are reviewing $495.

    For a small company trying to build up its brand, Tom Beckbe somehow has the worst customer service I've yet to experience.
    Never did I have an address not lighting up as green on someone's computer lead to two weeks of no communication despite e-mails, phone calls and reaching out via social media on a paid for order.
    To keep it short, a discrepancy between GIS and physical addresses not being updated there yet in my rural international location has halted an order, with no further communication past the initial request for an updated address some two weeks ago. Somehow this was never an unresolvable issue with dozens of prior orders from the US, some of which for more valuable goods than the Tensaw jacket I have ordered as a birthday present for my father.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Damn, that’s really disappointing to hear.

    • @gunailabai
      @gunailabai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarlMurawski kudos for checking in on comments this long into a video's lifespan.
      Most certainly. I've been eying the jacket ever since you've posted this detailed video, and ordered it for my father with a future one for myself certain in mind as well.
      Alas, even if by some miracle they actually do get back to me within the next day or two, before I make up my mind to ask for a refund, the experience has soured my perception of the brand a fair amount. I ordered a twill shirt for myself alongside the to-be-gifted jacket, and I simply don't see myself wearing it with how things stand. Naturally my dad is unaware of this all so if the order does end up being fulfilled he'll get to enjoy the jacket, and I'll gift the shirt elsewhere.
      In contrast, a recent order of boots from Parkhurst had a similar discrepancy (I assume this is to do with both using Shopify), but that was resolved with an e-mail exchange within that very day followed by expedited processing on their end seeing how it was a Friday. While I did not expect this extent of excellent customer support from Tom Becke, I also didn't expect them to 'ghost' me in a manner akin to a teenager avoiding their boyfriend or girlfriend in hopes that they'd pick up on the signs and break up with them (i.e. I suspect that they'd rather I just cancelled my order altogether).
      I'll likely have to end up getting him one of the British jackets instead, even though I'm quite certain he'd have enjoyed the Tensaw a great deal more.

      The Northern European brand Fjallraven waterproofs some products with Greenland wax. They're a famously durable & expensive brand & the stores will vary the wax by season. You can see people bringing in their jackets and pants to get the thickness of the wax coating reduced during the coldest months and thickened for autumn.

    Barbour, lol. Such a rip off. Bad cuts sleeves are always too short. The canvas is too thin too. Rubbish for hunting if it gets cold.

    to be honest wax is crap and actually dangerous,,,,they are not water proof, dont breath,,,they just get wet and stiff and take ages to dry out thus promoting hypothermia,,,,ive had more than a few top brands ,,,certainly moved on now
