John Carpenter was always at his best doing low budget films. Hes in a class of his own. Extremely influential and transcendent.

John Carpenter's the man. Love the 'Making of Halloween' special feature on the anniversary Blu-Ray/DVD in which they talk about how they lit The Shape's mask with a blue-light in dark rooms to add that crazy eerie effect. They also discuss what the film was like prior to adding the original music... how much scarier it got with addition of a few keys... shows you how far that Casio keyboard can go. Wasn't aware it was all shot in Pasadena, CA and not in "Haddonfield," IL until I was much older, though I lived near Pasadena... he creates amazing worlds within worlds, and on a shoestring budget. Amazing man. Thanks for this Sareesh.

John Carpenter is one of my idols - Love all his stuff - THEY LIVE has one of the most unbeatable fight scenes ever because he just let the two guys carry on and on, and made the scene longer - It was very thrilling and exhausting in a dramatic way. Thank you for making this awesome video Sareesh. John Carpenter, is truly one of the most inspiring and greatest filmmakers ever.

Mike what’s wrong with dark star?? That was his first and done on extremely low budget which has always been his staple. That’s brilliant and talented filmmaking.

Also all his shots are just perfectly composed from the framing to the mise en scene down to the lighting. You can tell at least some thought went into every shot.

Videos like this always talk about "simple smooth camera moves" these are the most expensive and time consuming to get on a true shoe-string budget. The equipment and crew required to pull off a tracking shot compared with handheld or locked off can easily double or more than triple your budget for that day, not to mention how much less material you'll be able to count on covering. I agree that they add production value, immersion and excitement but its important if you are really working with no money to understand how much more work and planning they require.
