    I met Carpenter and he was very cool. I actually asked him why he comes off grumpy. He laughed and said, “it’s a huge emotional rollercoaster for me to talk to strangers. I hate praise and ego worship. I hate having my ass kissed. I was a kid who loved making movies. Anything beyond that is a myth”. I’ll never forget that.

If he hates ego worship and having his ass kissed and is just a “regular dude” like Alex Knox up there claims then maybe he should stop doing interviews and stay out of the public eye. John was rude and patronising. I went off him after seeing this interview. I know he is a heavy smoker which can make people overly agitated but he usually controls his mood swings. Maybe because this was for a company in Britain artists often let themselves go as it isn't America. E.G. Robert Mitchum was more mannered in American interviews but when he came to Britain quite a different character was on show.

      We met John and Cody that night, near the tour bus outside the Vicar Street venue. We waved at him like mad to get off the bus (we'd had a few) but he shook his head. When we were halfway up the street, one of the security guys called us back and said "John wants to talk to you". And there he was, climbing down from the bus with his hand outstretched. I don't know why he changed his mind, but I was beside myself. Unforgettable night.

    I really like Carpenter's laidback, pretension-free view of films and his own work. His point about the interviewer trying to intellectualize everything is spot-on -- you can see Carpenter's desire to have a normal conversation when he talks about length of flights etc. This is the first interview I've see with him when he seems snappy, and I don't think it's his fault!

    • @JoKiR90
      @JoKiR90 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s his fault 100%. He’s been in the movie business since the 70’s. He knows what he’s getting with these interviews. Especially at this point in his life and career. He knows they’re not their to have a good old fashioned friendly conversation with him about flights and the weather and what he had for breakfast.
      They didn’t twist his arm to do this interview. At this point John chooses what he wants to do and doesn’t want to do. He chose to be there so his behavior, again, is on him.

    Its just painful to watch. The guy just doesn't set it up to be enjoyable at all, have a bit of energy. Rather than ask questions that we can find anywhere (and ones Carpenter has answered countless times) mix it up, ask some fun questions, what was the hardest shot of this film, what is your favourite shot of that film, if you had to get stuck in a room with one character who would be the best and who would be the worst, I think Carpenter would have enjoyed it more if the interviewer had more charisma and energy it comes off as a stilted nervous wreck and the constant going back to the book....jesus!
    Speak about subjects Carpenter loves and bring it round for the interview. Why ask questions we can find in countless places.

    I had the pleasure of playing drums with the Flamin' Groovies (see Wikipedia) at the production wrap-up party for the movie,
    "The Thing" that year in Hollywood. I met John, his wife Adrienne (both very nice at the time)...and the special joy of meeting Kurt Russell ...who just happened to be a "Flamin' Groovies" Fan (go figure!). It was a fun night. The band members were all given purple, silk team jackets with "John Carpenter's The Thing on the back.....which I lost years ago. We heard that John asked Kurt, "Who would you like to provide music at the wrap party?" Kurt said, "the Flamin' Groovies"....to which John replied, "Who are they?" Always liked that movie!
    It sure was painful to see such a BAD interview! Poor John, having to put up with such shallow questions! Hopefully the interviewer will find an easier profession for himself............maybe Underwater Fingerpainting!!

    When he asked about video games based on his films I was surprised he didn't mention The Thing video game that was released back in the early 2000's. I think it was released as a sequel to Carpenter's 1982 film version so while it's not technically a video game version of the actual film...I still think it would have been worth mentioning.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was even "endorsed" by Carpenter at the time, and was one of the better video game movie tie-in games we've gotten over the years. They tend to be ass, but games like Chronicles of Riddick and The Thing help break that rule occasionally, which is why I feel they deserve mention ;)
