Charge speed matters for road trips. 20-80 might be 30 minutes but how much can you charge in 10-15 minutes at low SoC when other cars may be pulling in 200 kW?
It doesn't matter how fast it gets to 80%, what matters is how much range it has at 80%. In the Solterra/BZ4X, that's only about 160 miles. In the Model Y, that's almost 230 miles (With realistic range, not what the guess-o-meter says).

You said this is a very cheap car to own but what about maintenance costs? Who can repair it? How to repair it? Where to repair it? What to do in case of accident? Can you repair broken parts or replace them totally?
one more point to consider for this car. the 20" tires have displayed faster than mormal wear in the BZ4X and presumably in some solterras but the weight of the car and instant torque contributes to this
charging may be okay on paper but people have been having huge issues with charging their Solterras and bZ4Xs. Sub-50kW especially in the cold. I did like the bZ4X when I test drove it.
I was interested in the Lexus RZ until I found out it was a rebadged Soltera/BZ4x. But as you mentioned the lease deals are great. I just bought a Nissan Ariya.
Is there still a limitation for fast charging for this car and the BZ4X? The initial car was programmed so that you couldn’t fast charge more than twice in a 24 hour period…
It's a good car to lease, especially if you will not road trip it. If you're looking to buy, look elsewhere. This is old tech and pretty much every other competitor has better stuff.
Good, even-keeled review. It’s based on the Toyota Bz4x, which is part of why it has some odd features for a Subaru (eg, the weird, Prius-like driver screen).
These are going pre-owned for low 20s nowadays with not too many miles on them. Depreciation bad for first owners but maybe a decent deal at those prices.
I had to say no to Tesla and other EV’s because I couldn’t get comfortable with their touchscreen/menu-centric controls. I need actual buttons to feel I’m safely interacting with the car while driving. Add current lease low pricing that’s available, default AWD (this is our fourth AWD vehicle), and behind steering wheel instrumentation (which this video’s reviewer didn’t like) and I couldn’t be happier. Yes the range is limited but we needed this other car for getting to work, groceries, hauling the mountain bikes to a trailhead and this car is perfect for us.
The nissan Ariya with E-force is 47k, dual motor and 389 hp with 380 torque. This subie offers a lot less for a lot more money. doesn't make sense. 278 miles per charge on the dual motor. and 300 for the single motor version.
Just get a model Y and get it over with. I would be very reluctant to get anything other than a Tesla. A Nissan electric car is not even close to the top of the list. No other car company really has the technology like Tesla.
How come Tesla is the only normal priced car company that can make a screen that is fast and responsive? Almost every other car is laggy and slow, how can a huge company not do it at least as good as Tesla?
That is one place where some companies will go as cheap as possible , but its a terrible place to go cheap . This is 2024 , with the tech that is available right now there is no excuse to save a couple dollars on slow response screens . No excuse what so ever . At this very high price point the screen should be nearly instant in response . And if the go cheap on that , what else have they gone cheap on .
I am happy with the Solterra. The screen works fine. He admitted that the slow screen was his fault. In normal use, it is quite fast. The car is very comfortable and I can recharge in my garage. Do you in your galaxy brain think Toyota and Subaru have that limited amount of resources that they can't do both? This isn't even about EV's, this is about making better vehicles.
He’s right , the market right now is hybrids . It’s all about making as much money as possible and hybrids is where its at and Toyota knows that very well
I'm waiting for Toyo to make a PHEV Corolla .... I currently have the Hybrid Corolla AWD and it is one fantastic car.
It doesn't have a spare tire. No tow hitch. The battery takes forever to charge. And low range. Interior has plastic that scratches easily. Steering wheel blocks the front console. Back seat not good for tall people. It's a no for me.
First somewhat posotive review I've seen on this or the Toyota variant...
I have looked at all EV’s. All priced $50,000 on up. I need an AWD because of snow. Not many can afford any EV’s. The car dealerships are limiting EV’s and hybrid so they can ask $50,000 on up!!
Appreciate the dictionary 6:19
Is he not aware that this is just a BZ4X with Subaru badges?
Yep , one and the same . Toyota and Subaru worked together on this project . Joint effort
Dude, soy based protein? Seriously? I would think someone like you would not go for soy 🤣
He’s testing a Soyterra…
@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck 😂 that’s funny, i mean Soy products go well with Subaru 🤣
Subaru have always been crap at anything that isn’t a standard boxer engine. I’m not surprised that the Soltera is a Lemon
I bought model Y instead this one . model Y awd costs me 40k .
This car is beyond FUGLY inside and out! I wouldn't drive it if it were free. I mean, it's almost like they were deliberately trying to make this thing ugly. The Pontiac Aztek lives again!
This looks like a 38K vehicle as spec’d, just no where near what they are asking.
Way too expensive. Since it is really a Toyota and Toyota is not committed to EV’s, I have no confidence in the car being improved very much.
its just bz4x under different skin, don't expect too much
Toyota better take notice. The model Y is far better in almost every way and is cheaper.
People who like Toyota they don’t care about Tesla. Tesla can’t even sell cars at this moment
@@amrindersingh3949 the most traded in cars for Teslas are... Toyotas.
I had a similar situation. A chick once gave me something for a week. It wasn't a great experience.
Horrible EV. Mine is gone, thank goodness, terrible charging and only 62 kWh of that battery is usable. Try DCFC above 50% SOC and it charges at 16 kW, yes 16 KW! Cold weather it’s a terrible road tripper,, 2 hours to charge at a 200 kW charger. I do not know anyone who has ever got 100 KWh DCFC either. Avoid this car. No illuminated window switches either. Nav does do any charging or trip planning. It’s the worst I have experienced and it costs $15 per month.
It’s hard to compete with the Model Y.
Gee, my wireless charging in my '21 Model Y has always worked great!
If you do local commutes around town, like soccer mom or retired, where can you drive a new 2024 EV for low 200's per month with zero down? Or any vehicle gas for that matter? End argument, Mike drop...
I don’t understand all the apologists for Legacy auto. Oh they need time to do it cheaply. Oh the govt is forcing them to do it too fast. EVs are not ready for prime time and they’re too expensive. Well the govt is trying to get Big auto to play catch-up, as China is going to be eating our lunch. The rest of the world outside of the Oil belt don’t want to be beholden to Big oil anymore, don’t want the pollution anymore and don’t want to be spending their nation budgets to make Exxon and BP execs rich while their countries stay in poverty. That is why China will dominate!
A box that has been "styled" with little regard to its basic function or user. Its sharp angled contrasting insets have as much utility as the fake boobs that Cadillac once had on their fronts. and can't distract attention from the price tag.
That Soylent Green crap you’re hawking tastes terrible. Maybe it’s the rotting corpses they used for flavor…🤣🤢
The review here applies to a Toyota bZ4X.
shiny black plastic is always a no no
Kia EV9-$80,000 and up. No one can afford that!!
I know this not what this video is about, but ummmm…. don’t think I’d be comfortable consuming Soylent. Especially the Green variant. 🤦♀️Wonder who approved that name.
wonder how much they are losing on that, probably less than ford 132k loss per vehicle
A subaru without a boxer engine is not a Subaru.
Toyota built compliance car!😅
😂 what a joke , revisit it in 2 years, will be able to pick it up for $2999.
What a name .... why .... why ... would you buy this and not a Tesla .... I am on my 4th Forester !
The Tesla Y lease is over $550 where I am and this is $380 lease for the loaded version,0 down . So it comes down to cost savings. For Purchasing the Y comes out cheaper with the rebates
See, EV's suck, so now that you are at our dealers, check out this ICE car......
I got spoiled by Tesla with the frunk… Can’t look at EV the same way without a frunk…and they want 50k for it.. just doesn’t make sense to buy anything else but Tesla
This is the worst car! And the drivers screen is so stupid!
Hey Subaru, why does the range suck?
Things to love about EVs:
1. Child battery labor
2. Range anxiety
3. Risk of garage fires
4. Paying 20k more than a comparable vehicle
5. Battery degredation
6. Poor resale value
7. Reduced performance in cold, highway
8. Higher repair costs
9. Awful charging network experiences in the weather without restrooms
10. Higher insurance rates
11. Replacing tires more frequently
But hey theres a tax credit!
