Excellent video. I was just at WalMart buying True Oil for my knife scales and the gun bluing was right next to it. I'm just learning so I'm using blades from a kit right now but I really appreciate your sharing of knowledge.
genius. have never thought or heard of that way of doing it. awesome. since I have the setup but messing around with the chlorid shit always was a pain. have to give your way a try. thx for sharing. new to your channel n l oving it. take care. greetings from Austria
I think you're getting a more consistent/even finish with that super blue than I'm getting with ferric chloride. I've been meaning to give super blue a shot, but wanted to experiment with the acid more. I use ferric chloride in a strong 1:1 ratio with water & it only takes 5 minutes to get a dark finish comparable to the super blue. I can get an even finish w/ the ferric but things have to be just right---and, at least it's an easy process to redo if it doesn't work out. Stone washing can be forgiving too it seems and able to turn a pretty good patina into a bonafide finished look depending on how it turns out. It helps a lot to compare knife-making practices with some pros. Still keeping my day job 😊. Beautiful work sir 🤙
Nice tutorial on stone washing!!! Can you share a video on how you do the angled plunge grind on the knife blade? I struggle with that. As always great work and thanks for sharing!
When your finished putting the handle on how do you tout how up or continue the stone wash finish down the edge of the tang between the scales. Hope that made sense. Thanks
Any chance you would have a video on making plunge lines like that? I have the straight lines down to a science but having trouble with those since you have to hold the blade at an angle.
Does just stonewashing add protection from possible rust? I've heard that acid stonewashing is bad and will cause the blade to erode due to the acid. But just stonewashing it without acid will be better and will protect it without the acid.
I was wondering which size tumbler did you get, is it the 5lb or 18lb one from Harbor Freight? Also, how long of a knife can you put in the one you have?
If you want a longer lasting blue. Blue the knife rinse, then 0000 steel wool and repeat 6 to 8 times. This will add a deeper bluing and last much longer and also protects from rust. I do this then tubble in my homemade tumbler and it comes out awesome.
I'm trying to get a good stonewash on mine to prevent rust. I heard using acid is bad for the steel. Do you have a video or something I can watch explaining what you're talking about? Thanks
Tried the Super Blue + stone washing today on two knives. Turned out fantastic. Will use more often. THANKS!!
Very nice!!
Thanks Matt! Now I have an idea to start with stone washing some blades.👏👏👏
Looks amazing!!!! Thanks for the lesson!!!
Thanks for watching!!!

Glad I could help out!

Will the gun blue work on maxamet steel?

Yes there’s a video up on that!
Can you send me the link to it please.. I’m having trouble finding it. Thanks for the reply!
Great vid. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!!!

So I take a q tip with a dab of gun blue and lightly go over the sanded area with that. It looks pretty good!
@@gentrycustomknives8008 thanks 👍

I definitely need to make a video on that!
Can you also blue mirror polished blades?
I’ve never tried that!
A great video! Are you using a case tumbler that is made for wet tumbling?
Yes!
@@gentrycustomknives8008 thank you 😊🙏
Can you do it on aluminum? I was just wondering it on Hammond cast aluminum enclosure.
I’ve never tried 🤔
Should you put on a maker's mark before bluing and stone washing or doesn't it matter?
I do them after
Great video
Thank you !

It provides protection
I've seen other guys say that if your going to use gun blue on a knife that you can't use it to cut food with it. What is your opinion on this?
I wouldn’t use it much for food prep personally.
When you etch your logo after the stone wash does the finish smear when cleaning up your etch? I clean my etch up with mother’s mag polish.
I don’t really have that problem much.
Does this also work on stainless steel?
Bluing does not work on stainless steel
Do you know how civivi does a really black stone washed finish?
And do you think it's safe to cut food with the black stonewash finish by Civivi ?
I do not know
@@gentrycustomknives8008 👍

It’s the larger size and you can do a 10” knife
@@gentrycustomknives8008 Thanks for confirming and all your great videos...love them!
What knife is that on the thumbnail?
That’s my EDC cleaver
Break cleaner works great for cleaning it
Good to know! Thank you 👊
This looks really nice and thanks for the video. One question however. Will this type finish give a steel like O1 any protection against rust?
Yes it helps A lot with that! Still need to keep a light coat of oil on it but it won’t stain like a satin finish would .
@@gentrycustomknives8008 Thank you very much!
How many blades would you be comfortable putting in the tumbler at one time?
I only do one at a time now
Is super blue or ferric chloride finish food safe? I made some steak and kitchen knives I want to protect from rusting…thanks for another good video
Supposedly it is not food safe. Technically
I assume the knife will need to be sharpened after this?
Correct!
I'm asking me if it's toxic or not
Yes

I’ll give that a try 👊👊

i do my ferric in 5 minutes mix half ferric the other half apple cider vinegar
Nice!
