      It is actually construction work and restoration of valuable cultural heritage that has been damaged a lot amongst many others in Zagreb and central Croatia as a consequence of two very powerful and devastating earthquakes back in 2020: one in Zagreb that was 5.5 Richter's and Petrinja region one that was even stronger, 6.2 Richter's. Zagreb earthquake was the largest one after notorious major quake from 1880. and second one from the one at the beginning of 20th century.
      Although cathedral has had scaffoldings also for years earlier as part of the restoration efforts on original stone structures and decorations.
      Greetings from Croatia

      Zagreb is not in the Balkan. Balkan is a Turkish name for the mountain in Bulgaria. Calling the region Balkan is derogatory.

      And not only food! Croatia has numerous wineries with huge selection of world class premium vines and centuries old tradition of vine production.
      Did you know that nowadays California famous Zinfandel has it's roots from one of the very old Croatian grape variety?
      Also English royal family had one exquisite white vine from Ilok in Eastern Croatia served at the last two coronations!

    I hope you also were able to see Zagreb's upper town with the Strossmayer Promenade, St. Mark's church and it's colorful tiled roof, the Croatian governmental palace on St. Mark's square, the beautiful overlook towards the cathedral, as well as the outdoor market and series of parks that run south from the Ban Jelačić (main) square towards the train station, including museums and the opera house, etc.. There is so much more to Zagreb than shown, but I know your visit was very brief. On your next visit to Croatia, come visit the region of Istria! We are on the northwestern part of the coast, near Italy, known as Croatia's Tuscany. Amazing beauty, history, food, culture, seashore, and very different from Dalmatia and central Croatia. Full of wonderful pasta, truffles, seafood, excellent wineries, the world's #1 rated olive oil region, green hills, Roman/Venetian/Byzantine/Austro-Hungarian architecture, medieval hilltop villages, and surrounded on 3 sides by the Adriatic Sea...gorgeous.

    Štrukli are not puff pastry, it's more like dumpling consistency dough. Also it's not so popular among locals anymore, but it's one of only few authentic Croatian dishes, that's why we promote it. More as our tradition and culture and something our grandmas used to make, than a meal that local people enjoy in their every-day lives.

    I always find it weird when people are surprised that Croatia has great pizza and see food, I mean we literally border Italy... (Maritime/ Sea border) we've been next to them our entire history since the 7th century, Italy heavily influenced the Croatian coast and vice versa.
    If you visit anywhere on the Croatian coast from Novigrad in the region of Istria down to Dubrovnik in Dalmatia it feels like you're walking through streets in Italy... Venice for example has very similar architecture to Dubrovnik, not to mention that Croats in the region of Dalmatia speak in a different dialect to other Croats. And to foreigners it does sound like an Italian accent.
    Croatia varies drastically form region to region, from dialects and accents to the music and cuisine. You'll find a lot more see food on the coast than lets say the regions of Podravina or Zagorje or Slavonija where most food is meat based, a lot of pork, chicken, duck, beef, viel, potatoes, pasta... ect. And deserts like Mađarica, Čupavci, Štruklji sa sirom ili jabukama (Štruklji with apples or cheese), Krem šnite, Makovnjača (poppy seed risen dough thing) and stuff like that.

      Yeah but it's more of a Croatian style pasta than Italian and it is so delicious! Thank you so much fo all the information! We can't wait to get back to Croatia, one of our favorite countries in Europe! 😍

      @@samandnick You're welcome! And true it is a different kind of pasta, Id say that here in the continental Croatia we mostly eat either gnocchi or a long type pasta similar to Fettuccine or Reginette.

    Croatian food is a bizarre bastardization of Balkan cuisines like Serbian, Romanian and Bulgarian, mixed with bastardized Italian and Hungarian cuisines. Example, sour pickled cabbage with pasta. Croatia always was controlled and ruled over by the Astro-Hungarian Empire and then Italy.

    • @samandnick
      @samandnick  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow that is a very interesting way of looking at it and so true! There dishes were so familiar to cuisine that we knew about but had their own twist in a very interesting way!

      It's true, only without the bastardization part. That's just your personal hate... We love all our eastern and western influencers, being a small nation between Greece and Rome, between Byzantine Empire and Western Roman Empire, between Osman Empire and Habsburg Empire, between Eastern Block and Western Block...
