    It's tough for me, because I have to remember these "greatest" of all time lists are going to stick to the mainstream. Because I'm always going through these things like "Where's DOOM? Where's Billy Woods? Where's Aesop Rock? Where's Jean Grey? Blu? Rapsody?" Because many of the BEST rappers of all time (at the skill of rapping) aren't the "Greatest" in terms of public influence and notable impact.

      @righteouslioncomedian1069 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I get irritated with "Greatest Of All Time" lists because the criterion of what constitutes "the goat" is always vague. And then when you dig in, there's so many different, sometimes conflicting criteria to consider.
      Plus, don't forget, this IS a *Billboard* list, they ain't doing no real cultural deep dive.

    It feels like people have gotten terminology mixed, like people will talk about a rappers lyricism and what they actually mean is wordplay. Being able to rhyme shit or make an interesting pun doesn't make you a lyricist. in order to be a good lyricist youve actually got to be saying something. thats what makes the spiritual miricale people so funny, they're obsessed with the idea of people being better lyricists but basially none of them are saying anything at all, they're the opposite of lyrical, somehow far less eloquent and coherent than the "mumble rappers" they contrast themselves with

    • @FoxMulder-gq4kt
      @FoxMulder-gq4kt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Lyricism in Hip-Hop IS Wordplay. This is why we herald “battle style” rappers, the cypher and “freestyling” as part of the art. The mastery of simlie, metaphor, satire, hyperbole, and many other literary devices are what makes a rapper lyrical hence the choke hold Biggie had had on the game forever. Very few stand up to him “lyrically” and this almost always is in relation to technique. Same thing from Rakim to now guys like Lil Wayne.
      Hip-hop in terms of a genre is MOSTLY spoken in the 2nd person unlike most other genres and is very limited in dimension. Rappers are always talking about some phantom “you” (2nd person) and typically that “you” is other rappers or other “gangsters” in the street. If we limited lyricism to being able to be eloquent on a wide range of topics there would be almost no genre whatsoever.
      Think of some of the greatest rappers and now eliminate the 2nd person/wordplay based content, there’s almost nothing left for MOST rappers after that. So no wordplay is absolutely core to lyricism in the hip-hop genre and it’s the observation of this in its meager attempts most times these days, is the only reason why some of these new artists even get any recognition whatsoever.

    The problem with these lists is the criteria by which the rappers are rated.
    What is their placement on these lists based on?
    Flow?
    Lyrics?
    Commercial success?
    Longevity?
    Impact?
    Discography?
    Name recognition?
    For example, it's difficult to imagine any top 50 list of rappers in which both Gucci Mane and Eminem both belong wherever they may be placed.
    So, any list of rappers NEEDS to have sensible and clearly defined criteria that determines the placement of the people on it.

    Music being ranked like a competition is always messy, but I personally think if you're going to rank MCs, the best way to do it is by being specific about what you're ranking them on. An example would be to me, MC Ren is far and away the better lyricist between him and Cube. It's not a competition. But Cube is the better storyteller, and that makes his verses/songs/albums stick with you more. That's part of what made them such a great duo in NWA.

    I feel like a Greatest Rappers list should prioritize artists who are great at rapping among other things, so spitters like RA The Rugged Man and Tech N9ne should definitely get some shine here, I know there are other intangible variables like legacy, repertoire, style, relevance, musicality, influence, etc. but lyrical miracle skillset is still the name of the game to me when you talk about "rap" (not just "hip hop", "artistry", "songwriting", "content", "culture", and "impact", but RAP = rhyming and flowing)

    It would be interesting to see a video about eminem's role in and contribution to hiphop, and how different it was for a white rapper to come up back then vs now.
    I feel like so much nuance is lost in that conversation because of the stereotype that his white fans/imitators (and to an extent, himself) created
    It was wild to see so many cringey chuds saying eminem sold out to the woke crowd when he went against trump, because you'd think that songs like 'White America' completely went over these mega stans heads. They never cared about his content, they just wanted him to be their self-insert into black culture

    • @MechAdv

    From the perspective of someone who is only a casual listener of rap: all the people you called out as being too high on the list (or on the list at all when they shouldn't be) are people I've heard of.
    Many of the people you said should be higher on the list are people I've either never heard of, or barely so. Those I have heard of, I liked their music.
    So clearly this list is more about widespread appeal and market value than it is about talent. Which kind of make sense, given what Billboard is.
    But I've put all those artists you mentioned favorably on my list of artists to check out.

    • @anotherguy3082
      @anotherguy3082 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thats what the problem with lists like these is. How do you quantify success? Drake barely even writes his own stuff, but is a more influential and successful rapper than about 80% of this list. 50 cent was very 1 note, but that one note made him one of the biggest rappers of the 2000's. You can be a massively talented artist, but if you are only known by purists, how can you be argued as the "greater" rapper?

When you look at the whole scope of that G-Unit era…the mixtapes that got him a name before Get Rich (the mixtapes that caught Eminem’s ear, mind you), the fact that he essentially revolutionized the mixtape game, the success of Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, and Game’s solo projects (not to say he did all the work but you can’t deny his influence was there), and all the absolute heat that came out of that G-Unit camp for like 5 years consistently, man.

    To call biggie overrated, when so many rappers have copied his lyrics and his cadence, is wild af.

    I agree with your 50 take but I feel the same way about Jay-Z. he's got a better body of work than 50 for sure but without his money and empire, Jay-Z wouldn't be the icon he is. he's closer to #10 for me

      On a personal level, I agree about Jay Z. He is probably the biggest rapper that never really clicked with me that much. I do like Reasonable Doubt but I struggle to enjoy much else. On the other hand, I have no problem putting him top 3 in an all time list because it's not just about me and what I like.

    Mr Morale is up there with TPAB. Shame people don’t see it yet. It’ll take time to digest, just like all K Dot albums. But as of now, it’s criminally underrated

      The first 3rd wasn't that great. It really wasn't. But the rest.... was crazy! Damn is easily his worst project. I got friends who haven't listened to Big Steppers and that's crazy. Big Steppers was better than a lot of rappers whole careers.

      @Adam Castagnetti just because MMTBS is less replayable than his commerical albums like DAMN don't mean it's bad ☠️. Literally the same argument when TPAB came out and was compared to the various hits off of GKMC

      @@londobellace Fr? First 3rd has some of my favorites on it. United in Grief, N95, Die Hard, and Father Time are all great songs

      @@joaquinmcgee9901 I don't agree. I was not a fan of Kendrick taking the nas production approach. Father Time was the first solid song I heard on the project. It's not too much to ask for nice beats with nice songs. And the second cd had nice beats and really heavy topics Kendrick explored well. I think the fact so many listeners bounced off the first cd speaks to my point.

    Last thing: if we were doing albums the infamous is definitely on here, but nobody from mobb deep is winning best rapper. Which again I think is super interesting and says something about the focus on the solo artist over collaboration. Part of the lingering Kayfabe of performing ‘mc’?

    • @hjblacdes61
      @hjblacdes61 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kinda agree with you here. The Infamous is a top 5 hiphop album imo. There was once upon a time where i considered it number 1. That album really has it all start to finish. But it doesn't get em ranked super high. Just an inspired stroke of fuckin genius. any artist as talented as to be in breath of this conversation is capable of putting out an album like that.

    gucci should be on the list for outsized influence he is why 'mumble rap' came to dominate the genres. i love him but get he's not everyone's taste, but the last couple crops of up and coming rappers owe everything to him.
