  • Much more rigid that the spring anti-backlash nuts you sometimes see on 3d printers, this nut block is also low friction, making it a great choice for a small CNC machine where you can't justify the cost of ballscrews. You can buy these nut blocks on the openbuilds part store, or make them yourself using the CAD models they supply.

For probing the part, I find a touch probe to be way quicker and simpler than feeler gauges or pins/dowels. You might give one of them a try.

Is there a particular touch probe you recommend?

@@imnoexpertbut I've only ever heard good things from The Maker's Guide's Triple Edge Finder. Dog River Tools makes a clone of the Carbide3D Shapeoko touch probe that would work well too. And the Triquetra touch probe is another great option.

@@imnoexpertbut I personally made my own but will be buying the Dog River Tools one here soon for a higher quality product.

After you flipped it, you probably could've picked up the fixed jaw for the Y-axis (assuming your vise is indicated). I think I would've used a 1-2-3 block (or something) to pick up the machined edge of the X-axis as well. Then in your "bottom" program, set the origin to the upper left of the part instead of the stock.
