- Both tools fill the lightweight plier niche in my EDC rotation but they are distinctly different tools. The major points of comparison are the pliers, blades and driving capability.
Pliers:
The larger pliers and much better wire cutting on the skeletool make it the superior option. It can handle some 3/8" fittings with difficulty but 1/4" is a breeze. The mechanics pliers do have better bite when gripping items but the smaller handle makes it difficult to get good leverage.
Blades:
The skeletool's 1-hand accessible 154CM blade around 58HRc is definitely superior on paper. But the thinner and slicier 2-blade setup on the mechanic is more versatile and capable for fine tasks. So for those that want a dedicated pocket knife the skeletool wins but for those that already have a dedicated folder the versatility of the mechanic will likely be preferred.
Driving Capability:
The awkward handles of the skeletool can make using its nice bit exchanger a little tricky. The double sided bits and extra bit storage beat out the mechanic in almost all situations except those when the great Victorinox flat driver can be employed.
