    Pretty simple, my answer was 0 - 1 - 2 + 3 - 4 + 5 + 6 - 7 - 8 + 9 = 1
    Don't know what Brian's "elegant" solution was as I haven't seen the full vid yet, but this is pretty damn elegant imo.
    Edit: I feel cheated by the actual answer.

    I came up with (0 x 1 x 2 x 3 x 4) + (5 + 6 + 7) - 8 - 9 = 1 in about 2 minutes. It's a matter of record that I'm mathematically challenged but I've been working on it and these Scam School puzzles have been a real help. The fact that I managed to come up with any answer, especially in so little time shows how much you guys have helped me. Thank you Brian and the good folks who make scam school happen.

    Actual most elegant solution:
    Hold the paper in a cylinder so it reads "10123456789=10123456789=10123456789....."
    No writing or tearing required.

    I thought of 2-9 as pairs that added to 11 (2 and 9, 3 and 8, etc) and I used that to do 0+1+2+3-4-5-6-7+8+9=1
    As long as you add/subtract pairs of 11s (ie +2 and +9 is cancelled out by -5 -6) you’re golden.
    I do like Brian’s answer and the 0! Answer. Good stuff

      +Guideelk If you work out everything inside the parenthesis, that equals 0. However, the ! (factorial) on the outside would make it 1, because 0! = 1.

    I got 0+1+2-3+4-5-6+7-8+9=1
    Basically i just removed the 0 and 1 then split the rest into pairs that add to 11 which cancel each other out:
    (9+2) - (8+3) + (7+4) - (6+5)=0
    Add the 0 and 1 back in and rearrange to get the correct order.

    We can pair numbers like 0 and 1, 2 and 3 etc, the difference between two numbers in each pair is 1, so we can make like (-2+3) or (+2-3) which will lead to adding or subtracting one to result, and we have 5 such pairs of numbers. So let's make 2 pairs subtract 1 and 3 pairs add 1, for instance:
    (0-1) + (2-3) + (-4+5) + (-6+7) + (-8+9) =
    0 - 1 + 2 - 3 - 4 + 5 - 6 + 7 - 8 + 9 = 1
    The puzzle is very easy and it has too many solutions. It's even hard to say which one is "elegant" because a lot of them are elegant and simple.

    I was positive this was the "elegant" solution:You have 0 +1, which obviously equals 1. The rest of the numbers can be paired up to equal positive 11, or negative 11. For example: 2 + 9 = 11, 3 + 8 = 11, -4 - 7 = -11, -5 - 6 = -11. So all you have to do is have the last eight digits cancel each other out by creating an inverted pattern of pluses and minuses starting with 2 (below, I've used + + - - - - + +, but there are several inversions):0 + 1 + 2 + 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 + 8 + 9 = 1

    the sum of 0 to 9 is 45, so if I partition the set into 23 and 22, then put + in front of each number in first set, and - in front of second set, the difference is 1.

    1+2-3+4-5-6+7-8+9 or any variant. For example you could also do
    1+2-3-4+5+6-7-8+9
    1-2+3-4+5+6-7+8-9
    etc. It's pretty easy to rearrange the plus and minus signs. Not sure what the "most elegant" solution will end up being, all of these seem about as simple as it gets.

    my solution before the reveal, if you alternate between add and subtract, 0-1+2-3... = -5, and if you alternate starting with +. 0+1-2+3... = 5 so you can either start with subtract and alter the pattern and adjust it by +6 by adding the 3 instead of subtracting, so
    0-1+2+3+4-5+6-7+-9 = 1
    or you can adjust the other sequence by -4 by flipping the signs of 4 consecutive numbers starting with the 6.
    0+1-2+3-4+5+6-7+8-9
    or maybe create bracketed off 1s multiplied together
    (0+1)(-2+3)(-4+5)(-6+7)(-8+9) = 1

    me and my friend used to use the random integer function on our calculators to generate 4 random integers 0-9. with those numbers you had to to create a true equation without altering the order of the generated numbers. So for example if the calculator generated the number set {6, 3, 3, 8} one solution would be 6/3=|3!-8|. you can use almost any operation as long as the operation doesnt include writing another number (for example a cube root) and the certain operation doesnt break the game (for example derivatives).

    Ah! That truly was elegant. To get the answer I did 0 x (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +5) + (6 - 7) x 8 + 9 = 1. It does not really matter what operations I used inside the first parentheses because I multiplied it by 0 to take those numbers out of the equation, I could just have easily multiplied 1-5 together because it still would have ended up being 0 plus the rest of the solution.

    How about 0+1+2-3-4+5+6-7-8+9=1? Also, if you continue the + + - - pattern onward you will get 1 if you stop at 1+4n (1,5,9,13,17,21... etc). Ex (0+1+2-3-4+5+6-7-8+9+10-11-12+13+14-15-16+17=1). Not only is this elegant, it's a pattern that repeats itself forever.

    paused at 3:37 I got two answers, one is a lot more forced than the other:
    First was: 0+1-(23+(4+5))+(6+7+8+9)=-1
    Second was: 0*(1234567)-8+9 = 1
    Now to continue watching to see if that was the most eloquent way of solving it.

    He combined numbers... This is elegance. All I used were parentheses and subtraction.
    ((0-1)-(2-3))-((4-5)-(6-7))-(8-9)=1
    Or to simplify...
    ((-1)-(-1))-((-1)-(-1))-(-1)=1
    ((-1)+1)-((-1)+1)+1=1
    0-0+1=1

    Surely the most simple LOGICAL way is to note that the sum of the digits = 45 = 23 + 22.
    Therefore just find any digits which when added = 23 ( e.g. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 8)
    Then the other digits when minused = - 22 (in this case - 6 - 7 - 9)
    No tricks, no complicated algebra, just logic and primary school math

    Another easy solution to this is multiplying each of the numbers together to get 0 and then using the factorial symbol to make it equal 1

    I did (0+1)*(2-3)*(4-5)*(6-7)*(8-9)=1. The first term is 1, and the other four are -1, so the quadruple negative cancels out. I thought my solution was pretty elegant.

    If u want a proper puzzle u should try einsteins riddle. Kind of different but it is still a logic thing. Finally finished it today. The person in the yellow house owns the cat, the person who drinks tea smokes blends and the German owns the fish. I know those first two weren't asked in the riddle but I just gave them to show I had done it.

    Let's define "elegance" here. The "preferred" solution has two real funcions (addition and exponentiation) and one "pseudofunction" (converting 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 into 23.456,789). For me, that's a count of 2.5 functions. The factorial solutions are also at 2.5, as they use the factorial function and either multiplication or exponentiation on a converted number. I can get it down to 1.5 functions by writing ┌0.123456789┐=1, where ┌x┐ is the ceiling function (which gives the smallest integer greater than or equal to x). Not only does it have fewer functions, it also obviates the need for parentheses, only adds three symbols to the original setup, and doesn't require rewriting the numbers or adding an exponential carat.

      So you're down to a function count of 2.0 (one full function plus two half functions) and you have to rewrite the numbers so as to convey the intended operation without markings. "I geef you draw."

    (in case you didn't know, when deriving, constants become 0) (And yes, I did it off the top of my head just after they were written out and didn't see another solution)
    I don't see anyone else with my solution. I must have the best solution here then! NOBODY EXPECTS CALCULUS!!!

    Elegant is such a subjective term though. My answer was
    1+ (-2+3) - (-4+5) + (-6+7) - (-8+9) =1. Which I thought it was pretty nice. It turned it into a 1+1-1+1-1 which is a super easy problem. And It's not like that was crazy hard to figure out, I wouldn't say that someone is "incredibly good at puzzles" if they had trouble solving that one.

    How about 0+1+2+3-(square root)4-5+6+7-8-(square root)9? That woulb be 0+1+2-2(root of 4)+3-3(root of 9)+6+7(which is plus 13)-5-8(which is minus 13) and after you sort everyhitng out you end up with 0+1=1 which seems quite elegant to me.

      However... Mine appears more elegant to me, because I do not need an extra "+" for the 0.
      Great riddle, I will turn it into a challenge for my students. :D

    hmm.. when he drew the "barriers" in I thought that it meant you had to use each number on it's own and not as a combined number, so I went with
    0 + 1 - 2 + 3 + 4 - 5 + 6 - 7 - 8 + 9 = 1

    Why wouldn't you just raise it to the zero-th power? Add them up, multiply them, do anything but if you raise it to the zero-th it'll always equal 1

    Honestly, there's a ton of solutions that look elegant. Its hard to say one solution is more elegant than all the others. Also I like that Allison(I dunno what spelling she uses) tries to solve the puzzle while Sarah tries to cheat. I approve of Sarah's methods because cheating is good. Just remember Allison got nothing, Sarah got water. Cheating 1 Puzzle Solving 0.
