- "King Kong" made a huge splash when the movie character first appeared on screen back in 1933 and it’s remained a part of global pop culture ever since, showing up in sequels and big-budget remakes over the decades. His latest incarnation puts the giant ape somewhere both new and familiar in New York City. Jamie Wax reports.

King kong for best actor in a musical
YEEEESSSSS
grammy and oscars woooohoo
would that mean that mean they need to split it into 13 awards for the incredible puppeteers?
now for kong on ice
@@type1eagle994 - That is exactly what the Tony's did that year. The musical received a Special Tony Award for Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company to "recognize the achievements of individuals and organizations that do not fit into any of the competitive categories."
That's one of the most impressive puppets / animatronics I've seen since the first Jurassic Park. So amazing.
We need the companies to get together to give audreyll of little shop of horrors this treatment
Warren McFadden I thought the same damn thing. Just imagine.
@@ZoraTheberge I think it would be what thr show need to be a big hit on Broadway because its a great show in itself and the puppetry is what made the movie soo great
Warren McFadden the 2003? Revival had nice puppets but to push this show over the edge, you would need something of this scale. The problem with Kong is they built a musical around a puppet. Little shop is already a great show and deserves a puppet of this scale.
Yesssss
YES
That interview at the end was nice. I’m happy for her
That's just amazing... I love practical effects... And this is an improvement on that. I'd like to see more of this in movies. An improvement on the technology instead of a replacement by computer effects.
Did you guys know that this King Kong puppet was made from the creatures technology company? You guys may know that company from walking with dinosaurs the arena spectacular and also how to train your dragon live spectacular.
Seung Min Yoo you read the New York Times article, too?
agizzy23 no I was actually a big fan of walking with dinosaurs live that I tried to find the company who created these creatures and then soon founded out that they will be making King Kong live. And that’s how l founded out like this.
Seung Min Yoo oh! Cool! I saw that show as a kid and loved it
2:53 Look at the left!
I went and watched it today. When Ann helped him sleep by petting him and singing to him, I cried. HE ONLY WANTED TO PROTECT HER HE WAS TOO PURE IM DYING. but tbh I'd love to make a puppet or robot for Broadway or small plays
No nod to the groundbreaking, inspired 2005 remake by Peter Jackson? He is largely responsible for making the current generation fall in love with King Kong.
I was thinking the *exact* same thing.
Yes
Yea he got no love. Rest well my king
There were several clips of the 2005 King Kong movie. One of them was when he was holding Ann on top of the Empire State building.
@@KJinTX There were not. Rewatch and you'll see.
Technology means nothing without a great script and perfect casting and if it's a musical, the score and songs and choreography have to be outstanding and reflect the time that the story is set in. If all you can talk about is the puppet, then the production has not met the criteria for a great Broadway show.
TheChamCham68 TheChamCham68 It really is. If you just talk about all the behind-the-scenes of the production, and blatantly ignore the script, music, and choreography, then get out of my face.
Agreed. I only saw reviews but if they're true, then it's a shame such a great puppet is wasted on this show.
Shut up all of you! Their not doing this video to review the show, it was to talk about the puppet and the behind the scenes aspect. Your all Asshats.
Sounds like Mr Frisky Whiskers needs his litter box cleaned.
What a shame, you guys sit here and judge the show without even watching it. White people are wack lol
I was really lucky to see this big guy in new york it does no justice seeing him on a screen to be in a theathre with this gentle behemoth is a night that is filled with wonder and fright
Though the puppet is gorgeous and very awe-inspiring to watch, the rest of the show just falls flat. Sure, it's not horrible, the vocalists are all good and the acting is okay, but it just seems so bland. Sure, the puppet is amazing, but what is that without a story and music to match? I've seen community productions of Little Shop of Horrors that inspire more emotion than this show, despite having Audrey II puppets made of cheap foam and leaves from a local craft store, even though the puppets may have been poorly built and barely technically advanced at all, the passion and love that was obviously put into it made the audience forget all about the looks puppets. But with this show it almost feels as though they poured all of their effort into the puppet and then just stopped. It seems like the actual show itself is just an after thought, nothing more than an excuse to display the puppet.
Eliza W. So you dont recommend to watch this? .. since tickets are not so crazy expensive... I’ll give it a try
Eliza W. I just saw the show and thought it was quite good.
The tap-dance number at the end of Act One was the best part I think. It showed the personal and funny side of Kong.
Saw the show in previews. The puppet was amazing … for about ten minutes. The show as a whole was really quite terrible. The worst show I've seen in New York.
It should have been a play.
Not really surprised. It's Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark all over again, just better quality... Let's face it, it everything is better than the Spider-Man musical though.
😂 for real? Damn that sucks
That's too bad. But that puppet should be used in other Kong plays in fact this technology could be used to even make a Jurassic Park play or a Godzilla vs Kong play. The sky is the limit.
Reminds me of the old animatronic Yeti at Disney... Expedition Everest.
If only they would fix that thing
Mike Wright Beti!! Beti the Yeti!
How did I know the lead singer was gonna be a black girl instead the traditional white blonde girl hahaha
This is war horse on steroids
she seems so honest and light hearted. Im happy for her
6:00 “...racial undertones...” in King Kong? Must everything be a backhanded lecture about how awful America was and is? It didn't occur to me that the actress is black until she went out of her way to point out her race and gender. If that is so important, why hasn't Broadway staged a show about the achievements of Condoleeza Rice twenty years ago?
@@daesgatling1345 yeah, but that kinda stuff doesn't still happen in tribal africa?
My thoughts exactly. I didnt think of race until she brought some BS about seeing racism in the early films, which I dont see that there was. The reason why racism is still real is because people keep pointing out things that arent racist as if they are racist. Staaahhhppp!
Always watching The writers have stated, there was no racial undertones while writing the script/movie
@@daesgatling1345 So? Isolated tribes that avoided modern civilization still exist. There are even some cannibal tribes.
I kind of had more of a problem with the undertones of cruelty to animals. But really why do always bring up race. Cuz I kind of just thought that she was best for the part instead of a stunt.
What a beauty! Gorgeous technology combined with a gorgeous girl.
1:32 I see you drivin' round town with the girl I love and I'm like...
Imagine walking in on the guys in the back room with no context lmfao
I think I might have to plan a trip to broadway to see this for myself
Definitely
So cool the newness of the play and LOVE the puppet.
Really they made King Kong into a musical? Oh God! It doesn't even look scary!
The scary part is reading all the racist comments on this video.
They make everything into a musical I won't be surprised if they made a Friday the 13th one
The black guy looks with glasses looks like son of King Kong.
I'm holding out for 'Car Wash: The Musical'.
???
*Sings* "So basicallyyyyyyy im mONkeyyyyyyy~"
Because if you see King Kong running around you'd start singing and dancing.
great piece on cbs' part, just wish they went more in depth on how they actually manipulate that puppet because those facial expressions are crazy...
@1:32 man Kong looks lifelike!
You wrong for dat
Lol at the end when they made it about them and a person they worked with.
I never really liked theatre but this is something else. Something more. Would definitely check it out if I was in ny
Mo 2k
Don’t, the actual production is bad. The monkey is good yes. But not good enough to sit through the entire thing.
Did you know that king kong is in the public domain and nobody owns the rights to it. Universal has several times tried to say they own it and lost the court case. The story is fascinating and makes copyright law seem interesting, but you can legit make a king kong movie and can't get sued.
Wow, that's very interesting. They had a Futurama episode where Fry couldn't sing Happy Birthday To You cause it's copyrighted by Warner. I was like; really? Come on man.
@@moskalks6447 actually, in 2016, warner brothers sued for copyright and lost. Court ruling found that they only own the specific piano arrangement, but the lyrics and melody are in fact in the public domain and you can't be sued.
@@captaincaptain2128 Really, you don't say. I use to mess around at work with my friends, when ever we would sing it to a coworker on their birthday. "No don't sing that song, do you want to get sued by Warner."Lol. But that's interesting. So it's the piano arrangement that they own? Cool. Thanks for the info.

@@captaincaptain2128 Wow, are you serious? Thanks for telling me that. Did not know that. Had to look that up and you're totally right. Guess copyright is different for trademark. That's crazy never knew that.
This is why Practical effects will always be better than cg. There's more believability and heart that goes into it. There some cg that's fantastic but practical will always be the best
0:35 800 pounds?! Man, you must have King Kong confused with Donkey Kong! King Kong weighs WAY MORE than 800 pounds.
This reminds me of War Horse. Love that they're using puppets.
"I think it's a new York love story" says local pervert.
3:00 lmao "16 micro processors that give kong life like motion" you mean the 16 stage hands moving his body and hands around?
wiidiwii the microprocessors are for his face. Along with 15 servo motors.
Aldo Guadarrama Make that 30 dumb people
This looks like a Macy's parade balloon.
$3,500 a ticket for That????
No way
The kong animatronic was awesome
The ensemble and set and even some of the choreography looks just like Newsies omg
I wish they would have showed a little more behind the scenes of how the puppet moves and operates while also talking about the show.
Oh how I wish I could see that show, I've always loved King Kong! Too bad I live thousands of miles away 😔
@Nitro YT 😁
It’s like pepper’s ghost,
the performer is under the stage where a glass screen is showing on stage of the image, like the haunted mansion ghost
Wow what an amazing puppet.
Yeah!! I love Donkey Kong!
This guy looks himself like KING KONG
Wow that is absolutely amazing, I can't imagine how would it feel to see in live :O
...I still can’t believe this and shrek are actual musicals...
I had never seen a musical I didn’t like until I saw King Kong
Good God.. I was not expecting something so incredible.
You know what will be funny, if That thing said “Ello,Love”
1:19 they acknowledged Godzilla!!!!
Harambee would be proud, RIP great ape👏🏾☝🏾
My dad and uncle worked on this! My uncle was in charge of the hydrological part.
This animatronic has more animations than most of (R.I.P) Telltale games I've ever seen
Wow this is truly incredible!
3:30 OMG THEY HAVE WII NUNCHUCKS SIGN ME UP
I always feel sad for Kong. The poor guy shouldn't have to die. I always want it to change.. Skull Island is the only one that keeps him alive.
Unfortunately King-Kong couldn't be reached for interviewing.
I didn’t even know there was a King Kong broadway show lol
I actually saw this during my senior trip
6:35 she could very well just be acting , but none of us could tell . That's just how good of an actress she is !
Can we put a camera in the glass booth lol 😂
I want to see him fight a huge Godzilla puppet.
This is definitely a show I would pay to see....although I feel sorry for those 2 guys in the glass box with the other guy who’s constantly making gorilla sounds.
did they forget kong has hair
This is what you call a marvel of technology... Lmao!!
So cool
That woman is insane
Conservative Hamster so what
@Conservative Hamster You're the first hamster I've ever wanted to step on
I wanna see this show so bad
Wow, I really want to go to this show!
That guy talking looks like king kong.
Wow!i wonder what they'll have 10 years from now
How amazing is this! 😍
Remember when John Malkovich got really famous for giant puppets? But the only reason he did it was because John Cusack crawled in a little door and took over his brain? So the giant puppet was a metaphor for how John Malkovich was a giant puppet? Is that what this is???
I wanna root for this show just for the puppet and Christiani. They deserve good things.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand here comes race.
1:32 Mini Kong!
That's one giant Muppet...
Well I hope the guy that provides Kong’s voice has really good dental habits...
Wow, dude looks like K.K.
Saw this show twice amazing
Headass ... “I wanted to cry when I saw him”
The only show I’ll see at broadway
isn’t the entire point of Anne Darrow, is that she’s this different looking woman on an island of dark skinned people?
Ever since Mighty Joe young and the 1970’s remake the story has made Ann relate to Kong.
When did King Kong want a Black Girl?
7:00 i teared up
Black dude look like king Kong lmao
😂😂
1:31 THE *SON* OF KING KONG!
So Loki went into producing Broadway.
I wonder if this gets any records for worlds largest puppet?
How did they get the Kong himself to do an interview. Didn’t know he wears glasses.
I love it!..still dont understand the black eyes though,it could of been more life like if they made the eyes more realistic..the emotion in the face looks very real, puppeteers are killing it lately!
Lol so this is like that musical with reptar from rugrats in Paris
Seriously, a King Kong musical? It wouldn’t surprise me if we get a 1984 musical, or a Pet Sematary musical.
I probably shouldn’t give them ideas.
impressive
Did they not learn anything from Spider-Man on Broadway
great poster too....
