It's such a nice wee soup :) But make sure to add plenty of salt and pepper....this soup has a very mild flavour. I recommend using chicken stock (from a cube) instead of just water to cover the chicken...because you get tons more flavour. But as I wanted to keep this recipe super 'authentic' I just used water :) x

It is nice Rosie :) but very mild in flavour. It was made famous in the UK in the 80's by a Knor stock cube television advert lol....it's always served as a starter for a Burns supper (January the 25th) to celebrate the life and works of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. But also very popular at new year & Christmas :) x

Whoo-Hooo! Cock-a-Leekie Soup! I hear about it on British tv series; there was Hilda Rumpole in Rumpole of the Bailey bringing home a tin of it from Tesco...we’re watching Rosemary and Thyme mysteries right now with Felicity Kendall and Pam FerrisHow’s that for synchronicity?! Now I know it’s a promising version of homemade chicken soup. That sounds very good here in Minnesota now, with night temperatures double digits below zero. Must make this!

That looks lovely. I add onion and potatoes to mine. Did you say prunes? Am asking as have never heard of them being added to soup. Christmas day dinner is just my son and I and we always have his favourite starter of cheesy garlic bread with salad, turkey and all the trimmings for main and whatever takes his fancy for dessert. (He gets to pick it all) Hope you have a very merry cristmas.

Hi Margaret :) Cheesy garlic bread is a fave of mine too!! So I'm with your Son on that one lol. Prunes! Yes I know lol....It's very traditional to add a few prunes to your bowl at the end! We don't like prunes, and I certainly wouldn't like prunes in my savoury soup...but to each his own as they say :) Grilled bacon is also sometimes added too. I hope you and your Son have an amazing christmas....and fabby new year. Take care :) xx

Hello. I've watched your video for this soup which looks so delicious. I have one question....how would it be with a small pasta, such as orzo. I love rice but cannot stand rice in soup.....perhaps as a result of having too much chicken soup made with rice (portuguese canja). If you can give me your opinion I'd be most grateful.

I see from the title that Cock-a-Leekie is a traditional soup recipe, but is it a traditional Christmas dish where you live? I have heard the name many times, and have often wondered what it was,...now I know...and have just GOT to make it sometime. I think it would be absolutely stellar!

I just stopped by to watch this version of cock-a-leekie. Chef John added the prunes to his stick and strained them out. It seemed a good way to get the sweetness and depth of flavour without the unfamiliar addition of rehydrated plums. Your version looks delicious! LOL....Yes, *Cock* is the chicken element of the soup :D If you're going to give it a go....I'd recommend using chicken stock (from a cube or chicken bullion) instead of JUST water to cover the chicken.....you'll get tons more flavour.
