Seeing Lum's mother with Old Lum VA is such a nostalgia, like goddamn!
Exactly BUT the original series did get a ENGLISH dub just NOT a Canada/USA based one it only aired in the UK in 1981 to 1985 and not as a American/Canada BUT but Sentai filmworks that released this Japanese 2022 reboot DOES have a USA based anime studio so its likely that this reboot will get a 2023 American dub that it finally deserves after 36+ years.

Mah Jongg was created in China- and playing the game became a fad in the U.S. in the mid-1920's (there are still some people who pursue it). For some reason, when Rumiko Takahashi depicted Lum's mother speaking her native "Oniboshigo" language in her manga stories, she decided she'd illustrate them via mah jongg tiles.
Oni she speaks oni. Simply put. Now her husband can speak Japanese.

All new VA cast for the new series and i'd like to think of it as a cameo role. Lum's OG Voice actress voices Lum's mother in this, but also Ataru's OG voice actor voices Ataru's dad as well.
Probably because she’s like 67 and doesn’t sound like a teenager😂
When certain animation is remade, the all VA are sometimes changed in Japan. One of the reason is to catch fan from new generation, but there is no obvious reason. This change is often criticized by fan of original animation😅
