How to Remove KMC Missing Link - Without The Tool

  • In this video, I'm gonna show you how you can remove a KMC missing link without a tool. First, you will need a wire hanger to select the part where the missing link is. It will release the tension of your chain and make your job easier. After that, hook a cable around the missing link, the way I show you in the video. Pull the cable in the opposite direction. It will release the missing link!

    I fashioned my own crimping tool and was still having problems, the hanger wire to relax the chain did the trick! Thanks for posting.

    I broke a pair high quality pliers on a new KMC missing link 5mins ago. (I order new set pliers).
    I tried this trick as i sit here. I had peice of old brake cable and 2 reg pliers. I yanked and sure as shit it popped open! Wasnt easy but worked. I think this link was tougher them normal tho. Bless u brother!

    Was struggling for ages with this because back in the day the 7 speed ones came off by hand! Can't believe I didn't think of this myself. I didn't have a piece of cable so I just used a bit of string which is probably better actually as doesn't hurt as easier to grip.

  • @sabeblah
    @sabeblah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    For anyone still struggling it's because we're not understanding how a missing link works. It has indents in the side plates that hold the pin in place so no amount of force is going to unlock the pin on a brand new link. What you need to do is gently squash the side plates of the missing link together which pushes the pin out of the indents, then you can uncouple the link halves.

    Had doubts about this method, but.. IT WORKS!!! I have a KMC Z8S chain which has a non resuable quicklink supplied. I dropped the chain on to the smallest cogs on front and rear and used an old brake cable. It didn't want to give at first, but after some elbow grease it popped right off. Thanks for the vid, m8, saved my day :)!!

    • @morosis82
      @morosis82 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point of non-reusable is that you cannot use it across chains, ie. when you change your chain, you should also have a new link.

    Today I tried to replace a chain on my back. The new chain came with a missing link, but this one is different from your example missing link. Mine has 2 pins on one missing link piece and the other has 2 holes; and I never could line up the 2 pieces together; because the 2 pins and 2 holes could never line up so I could press them in together( little short and off-centered at one end/hole). Have you experienced doing this type a missing link?

      Ricardo Zapata Lopera U will find two bigger holes on the link where u can easily fit the two links together and when u're done pull the chain to opposite direction next to the missing link. U will here some click noise and it's done. For the best result u can move ur pedals to higher position when the missing is on the upper part of ur chain (just like when u start riding) and tap ur pedal will cause the missing link to "stick" together perfectly. :)

    very cool trick. now how do i get it back together?

    • @bikehun4843
      @bikehun4843  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should make a video about that but the easiest way is to join the two links together put the bike down to the ground, grab the pedal as it is facing forward and with some power try to pedal it with one fast motion. Make sure the rear wheel is on the ground. It should set the two links the way they should connect to each other correctly. The other method is to join the links with your hand and while you are holding the chain with two hands, try to strech the chain fast. Both method should work but it depends on how stiff your links are. Thanks for watching
