When did people start calling the joining link.... a missing link ?

The tool kit of the pliers and punch out link screw is ONLY 12 $ AND SO EASY ONCE YOU GET TOOL. I tried every tip , even the wires cable cross pull didnt work , and the other tricks. Decided to just pay 12 $ for tool kit over 50$ to take in shop to fix. Amazon works best.

worked like nothing. I used some 4 mill wire and it came apart like nothing. NOTHING, easy.

As an alternative, I put a small piece of wood in the cable and just rotated it in circles to tighten the wire.

How to remove KMC latch design missing link (ZL578) ? I can not remove it even with the link removing tool.

I used this technic but with pliers and vice grips. It works. But to be honest, your link is far more loser that it should be and normally cannot be broken by hand.

Thanks for the tip about dirty threads from an unsealed setup. I got a crank removal tool coming in the mail tomorrow that I'm gonna use on an old bike. I'm going to put some CLP on those threads now so they soak overnight. Should clean up nice and in time for tomorrow when the tool comes. I've heard elsewhere that it's crucial (like you said) to make sure the tool is fully threaded/seated so as to not ruin the threads on the crank arms...more threads engaged makes for a better grip for all that force. Having the threads nice and clean will help a lot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! :)

Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

I fashioned my own crimping tool and was still having problems, the hanger wire to relax the chain did the trick! Thanks for posting.

I broke a pair high quality pliers on a new KMC missing link 5mins ago. (I order new set pliers). I tried this trick as i sit here. I had peice of old brake cable and 2 reg pliers. I yanked and sure as shit it popped open! Wasnt easy but worked. I think this link was tougher them normal tho. Bless u brother!

I watched this ,all good but when I opened my pedal it's got bearings in a shell - unserviceable! Careful what you buy ! I had only done maybe a thousand miles and there worn out and unserviceable! Now got a pair of vintage pedals that are easy to service!

This “trick” does NOT work in the slightest bit on a new link. Pulled so hard damn near cut through my fingers and zero movement in the link.

Isn't that still considered a tool.
