SOIL TYPES AND CAPILLARY ACTION. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR GARDENERS. | Gardening in Canada 👩🏼‍🌾🌿

  • In this video we go over capillary action and why it’s important to gardeners. The level of capillary action you have is dependent on the soil type you have. Clay soils have a higher capillary action and there for retain more salts, more nutrients and more water. This capillary action in soil may cause more harm then good! However in a sandy soil the capillary action is lower. This lower capillary action mean soil holds less nutrients and also less water. This maybe beneficial if you’re growing something with low nutrient and low water needs.

You're videos are so down to earth yet so informative. I delight in learning so much from you and unlearning erroneous misinformation I've been given elsewhere by other "Master" gardeners. Promise us, your audience, you w winter stop!!!!

Due to technical nightmares and a wild week due to the peavey mart sponsorship this video is long overdue! But here is part two, I’m making a follow up to this one explaining the pot and rocks theory that is rocking the internet. Let me know what type of soil you have? I’d be interested to know what the average person in the group has going on. It helps me engineer my videos more so to what you guys are looking for.

It’s intense 😅 but I’m getting better at explaining thing so have one next week that’s really going to bring things together for the soil physics side

Seriously thank you so much for these vids! Been wanting to learn more about soil science to be able to grow better plants and also create long lasting changes to better the soil, and these vids have been the most informative and in depth ive found! Cant wait to learn more!

I am soo happy I found you!! This is so helpful. I have been experimenting with bark, Akadama, and clay. I now have potho cuttings in Haydite and granite chips. It has only been a few weeks so I don’t know how well this will keep water available for the roots.

Make a wicking container this year for my deck tomato plant. That was all capillary action, which worked great. Had 3 gallon reservoir, so we could leave for several days without needing a plant babysitter.

Yes! Fantastic idea. Plants actively growing do great with that design

Did it rely on capillary action of the plant roots as well as of the soil? I'm wondering if this is possible using the soil only so my roots don't rot growing down into a reservoir.

what i did was, i layed a layer of aggregates at the bottom of the soil bed, then placed a layer of porous geotextile on top of the aggregates and then filled the trench with soil and amendments, which keeps my plants from rising capillary action from the clay soil more over, aggregates and geo textiles will act as a capillary action breaker, try it in the garden bed if you have clay soil or highly acidid or alkaline soil.

There are soil psychics? Like people who can use ESP to find good soil?

Hey I have seen your video on clay and sandy soils... I did multiple soil tests and I have a high silt soil? I've never heard of what that is but my test has about 40% silt 50% sand and 10% clay. What are the properties of a high silt soil and how do I go forward in improving it?

For something like that i would aim for more sandy soil management strategies. do you find you soil too hold alot of moisture or no?

You labelled this video incorrectly. Its soil Physics and you labelled it Psychics.

I'm sure you meant Soil Physics and not Soil Psychics being a scientist.
