Perennial vegetables - "Under the Oak, Plants of the forest garden"

"Under the Oak - Plants of the forest garden" is a portray of Hanna Jönsson, founder of a perennial vegetables and plant nursery in southern Sweden.
"What was it really like here a few hundred years ago, when all of Skåne was forested? How much water was available before, when there were roots in constant contact with the groundwater, pumping it around? How much more did it rain because the trees were there, emitting substances that bind water molecules and make it rain? What have we really changed for the landscape, for insects, for us and other animals, when it is no longer a connected system?"
This is a film portray of Hanna Jönsson, in collaboration with My Kjellberg, devoted to developing the perennial plant material that could partly replace many of the annual vegetables; scots lovage, a perennial parsley, sea kale, a perennial mix between cale and broccoli, and bunching onion, an early spring substituted for yellow onions, just to mention some.
"There is a big difference between growing in perennial systems and in annual systems. One of the biggest differences is that it is very difficult to create a natural ecosystem, a system that works by itself, when you only work with annuals, because you don't create space for mycorrhizae. In a perennial system, you can really build it up, the way nature works. The more fungi we get, to co-operate with the plants in these systems, the less I have to do. Both in terms of finding water and finding and providing nutrients."

Det här är ett filmporträtt av Hanna Jönsson, som med stort engagemang, tillsammans med My Kjellberg, jobbar med att ta fram ett omfattande växtmaterial av fleråriga grönsaker som skulle kunna ersätta mycket av de ettåriga; strandloka, en perenn persilja, strandkål, en perenn blandning mellan grönkål och broccoli, och piplök, ett tidigt alternativ till gul lök, för att nämna några.
"Det är ju väldigt stor skillnad på att odla i perenna system och i ettåriga system. En av de största skillnaderna är att det är väldigt svårt att få till ett naturligt ekosystem, ett system som funkar av sig själv, när man bara jobbar med ettåriga växter, eftersom man inte skapar rum för mykorrhiza. I ett flerårigt system kan man verkligen bygga upp det, så som naturen jobbar. Ju mer svamp vi får in, för att samarbeta med växterna i de här systemen, desto mindre behöver jag göra. Både när det kommer till att hitta vatten och hitta och ge näring."

I found in a Swedish study of the government allowing the peasants to be summarily kicked off the land starting 1870. Their (those in positions of power) idea was to produce expansive monocultures. The peasants were in the way of these grand schemes it appears!
Now us former peasants are in a pickle as these many corporations behind the food system demand more money for lessor quality production. These investors are very greedy!
Excellent movie quality production packed with hard earned information!

I actually watch the price of m&c in bulk, seems as though this highly processed food is becoming more expensive!
Soon I probably can't get away with saying, "no money no problem, there is always mac & cheese"!

Wonderful! My red valerian is unfortunately very bitter from early on, I'll have to look for more. But orpine in turn is good all the season, never getting bitter, so that I can use from April to October. Working with perennial vegetables is a great experience 🙂 PS: oh yes, one question - does Hanna have some secret recipe for making Good King Henry germinate? This nasty bastard doesn't want to start at all here...
