  • Amazing this engine runs after lying for years on a farm in the undergrowth, all that was needed to get it running was to clean the spark plugs/ points, free off the siezed carb.

GM 180 Strausberg gearbox was shared with the Trimatic auto from the Holden 3.3 litre, nothing else. The block is deep skirt, not shallow, it has solid lifters, longer 5-5/8 inch rods, four bearing forged steel crank and the block isn't thin wall construction. Each cylinder is pitched 62.5 thou further appart, and the block is 9 inches tall from crank to head gasket face, 0.36 inches taller. It came in 2600 and 2800 cc forms in Belgian Rangers as well as PA's, PB's and PC Crestas.

Sounds like a strong engine . . they performed very well in the '65 Velox/Cresta, right through to the early '70's Ventora, with four on the floor and a zero to sixty of 12.5 seconds . . imagine with better manifolding and three carbs to feed it..!

My understanding of the Vauxhall 3.3 is that its a completely different engine to the Aussie Holden 3.3 witch is a 202 cu inch where as the Vauxhall is a 201 cu inch.

Impressive. Looked more modern than the one I had in a '65 cresta. This one has an Alternator and Pre-engage starter. Possibly from a Ventora?
I remember the old bendix type starter on mine used to make quite a crash as it engaged.

Hi PhaseForth- I too got one hell of a suprise when it fired up so easy, I took a chance and bought 2 engines this one as unknown condition and the other siezed.
These engines have more in common to the red and black Holden engine as they share the same bore / stroke and piston pin size, the cylinder heads are simular design but ports are different shape. I am trying to find out if a Holden performance cam will fit if anybody can help
Both are based on chev but dont think anything will fit

    With the Holden 202 cu. in. (3.3litre), Bore x Stroke; 3.625in. x 3.25in.
I do not know the Bore x Stroke of the Vauxhall engine, but would
suggest it is perhaps undersquare, where the measurement is, say,
    Bore 3.25in. x Stroke 3.6 in.

Holden which is another General Motors company in Australia had their own 3.3 engine from 1971-1986 which looks similar to the Vauxhall engine in the video :- holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/images/4/4c/100_1094.jpg
Except that Holden bolted the oil pump & filter on the other side underneath to the distributor.
I'm assuming it's the same Tri Matic transmission (TH180) which Holden built in Australia & they were also built in Strasbourg in France !

The Holden 3,049cc version (the '186') was the most reliable of all the versions used by Holden - the base engine was a 138 cubic inch Buick-derived engine originally I believe - the same capacity as the '59 PA Vauxhall 2262cc ..possibly the same core engine (??)

Gidday - cool video - I got a heck of a surprise when you started it on the trolley ! I am trying to find out more info on the 3.3L Vauxhall engine - is the same or similar to the Aussie Holden 3.3? Are either of them based on a USA GM engine ? Thanks

No Phase Four , the 1959 2.6 litre and 1963 3.3 litre were 4.125 bore spacing engines, while the 1963 on wards 179/186/202 Holden engine was based on a 4.08 inch bore center spacing engine
..nothing interchanges. The Vauxhall engine doesnt share the Chevy 194/235/250 4.40" bore spacing engine. The Opel OHC cam in head short pushrod engines from the Vauxhall Viceroy/Charlton/Royale/Monza share the same bore spacings; nothing interchanges.

I too was surprised by first turn and it immediatley caught and ran.My second surprise was how long you ran the engine with out coolant for the cylinder head or block,..I was sitting and watching the video clip and mentally cringing thinking of heat transference with no coolant to help. One question;..besides new points, plugs, and carburettor tinkering;did you check or change the engine oil?I was thinking years of sitting the engine oil would have sludged up plus there would be water from years of condesation from temperature changes.Same with the transmission,no drive shaft and any oil would have leaked out.Are you planning on a rebuild and into a car?..."Boomer"...

Hi Noel, Thanks for your reply, there was coolant in the block and fresh oil in the engine and I cranked it long enough to circulate.
I only run it for the length of the video so it did not get chance to overheat.
It is now in my Cresta and running great, I had to change the sump pan so gave the engine a good flush out but it was in great shape inside I also converted it to manual G/Box at the same time.
Will post an update video when I get chance.
      Thanks
      Dave
