I’m 30 and just started skateboarding yesterday. Got a legit board and started cruising. I love it! It is so much harder than it looks and I’ve been watching and digesting skateboard content for a decade. Finally decided to get off the side lines and become part of it. Excited for daily progress! Love your videos been watching you for years!
If you're new to skateboarding it helps knowing the basics. Stances: Regular Fakie Nollie Switch Ways of pushing with feet: Regular Goofy Mongo Types of skateboarding: Transition/vert Park/bowl Street Freestyle Down hill skating Types of tricks (can be done from all stances): Flip tricks Spins (big spin, bigger spin, shuv it, pop shuv it, 180, 360, full cab, half cab) Grinds and slides (done on rails or ledges) Ollie Old school tricks (usually originating from freestyle skating) Impossible No comply Manual Obviously the list of tricks would be too long but there's usually 2 main types of tricks...tricks that you pop the board and tricks that don't require popping the board on the ground. And then you can add variations of tricks in and out of tricks like for example: switch flip into board slide and big spin out With slide tricks and spins there's also front side and back side which is just the direction the spin is going in or the slide... And you can slide on nose or tail making them either nose slide or tail slide. Nose and tail also apply to grinds you have nose grind and tail grind, a grind is done on the metal trucks and slide is done on the board, nose and tail
Day 3 of skateboarding for at least 1 hour… was able to get half way decent stationary Ollie’s. Started practicing on rubber gym mats (grass wasn’t giving me enough pop). Yesterday barely could get anything going without the mats. Today didn’t use the mats and was able to get some off the ground 😀 man little progress feels so good!!
I view it as different genres. Street, park, vert, contest. Street being the coolest and most prominent as it should be. But they each have their place in skateboarding.
I can honestly see why "normal" people find it weird/boring. Like you said, they see skaters bail or fall and they think "how are these people pro?" because they have NO idea how difficult any of these tricks really are. Plus, tbh, the modern "street" format is...pretty boring, even to me. Back and forth, not much flow to it, maybe one rail trick and one flip trick per pass. I miss pyramid hips and courses where you can come at things from many different directions and find much more interesting lines. The funny thing for me is that my opinion flips 180 when it comes to park being in the Olympics instead of vert. Vert has much higher airs and there's a trick every wall, meanwhile park gives us half the run spent speed carving to hit the next wall, which is also boring. I'll still watch all of it because it's skateboarding, but they really need to get vert in there.
I prefer street as that's what I have always done. But if I am being honest, both park and vert are probably better for the "normal" people viewing audience.
vert is more boring in my opinion because for me its not gonna motivate/captivate how i like to skate. Things that motivate me are gonna be things that are possible. Finding a vert ramp or anything like that in nz is hard to do so I would say street is trillion times better then vert.
Running is in the olympics. Infact it's an og of the "games". Some people run for fitness... Some join running groups to be social doing a physical activity. Some people run because it clears their head, makes them feel good and give them mental well being. And some people run because they are good at it and can do well. Just saying people can enjoy the same thing in different ways
I’ve been skating since I was like 7-8 I’m 25 now, and I’ve gotten 3 of my co workers to start skating and got a whole set up and they love it, love the progression we make together even with the skill gap, we hype each other up and after skating alone for so long having a group of us
The Olympic skateboarding is still in its infancy and figuring out what they really could do with it, but the skaters are dope and it’s impressive they’re able to qualify at young ages. Crushing those back flips my guy! Keep it up! 🫡
Didn't expect to like the vlogs this much, but between the greater perspective, you implementing parkour, and comments like the one at 15:54, I gotta say I was wrong, this is some of the best stuff I've seen in a while.
I think you touched on a few key parts of the larger conversation for sure. The act of finding a spot that’s central to street skating is the most subversive part. It’s what gets you kicked out, accused of loitering and property damage, makes you a nuisance. But it’s a huge part of the creativity that makes some skaters call skateboarding “art.” Contest skating has always been a part of skateboarding, though. Street skaters can act like it’s a less pure version of skateboarding sometimes, but a lot of it predates modern street skating. Where street is often about doing something once to get a clip, and to have a lot of basics tight so you can improvise, contest skating is about consistency, at least until best trick comes along. There’s a lot to say about Skateboarding in the Olympics. One thing that will come from it, though, is progression. Look at gymnastics from early film and compare it to now-it looks almost like average 9 year olds today might have gotten medals in the 1920s. Olympic Skateboarding is at the beginning of that journey.
Now that coaches are involved, just like other sports... favoritism, MONEY or access to certain things becomes a HUGE advantage in wether or not you can persue skateboarding and that's sort of the opposite reason I started skating.
For the wall ledge push up, it helps to use your feet too! Found that to help me a lot. Exercise wise its great to just focus on your arms but technique wise, if you think about using your feet to push up as well, helps a lot :)
Been watching you since I was a kid learning to skateboard, great to see how your life is progressing and moving in new directions. I hope to see more if your videos in the future 🫶❤️
Your flip tricks are already at near where I was when I was teaching breaking (PS- Breaking is in the Olympics now, that should be interesting). The wall pushups may not look impressive, but they are, they are essentially pushups with ~160 pounds of downward force you're fighting against. I recall reaching the stage of wall pushups when I was looking to apply further and further resistance in my work outs. YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE: Learn how to do gainers. I recommend finding your way into a gymnastics gym and practicing where they do the floor routines, or into foam pits. Gymnastics gyms often have nights open to anyone where you can pitch in $10-15 to support the gym and try out the equipment. Gainers feel amazing, running forward and then jumping and tucking into backflip, and they look great on film, even when you break and accidentally spin sideways it still looks great.
I think some of the issue with the "non-skater" perspective comes down to the format as well BUT i do not want to see it changed. My wife watched the prelims with me and said "man, they fall a lot" and i had to explain that 1) its part of the sport, everyone falls. Its sorta what makes the sport endearing to me and 2) these guys are sending the biggest tricks they have because its a best trick format. They have to go as hard as they can because everyone else is. The other part is that the skill floor for skateboarding is so high to start. Its not swimming, track or biking where the average joe can do the base activity so they have a thing to relate to. 9-10 people will not be able to ride a skateboard if you hand it to them so they dont have that measuring stick for oh what they did is really hard. Hopefully if skateboarding sticks around in the Olympics those things will sort of work themselves out.
This year was the first time i watched the olympic. Didnt expected something, but man it was a blast to watch. I loved it. Normally im also a person who think that Olympic and Skating is do not fit together but i was proven wrong. I love all aspect of skating and Olympic is a part from that. Im also a skater from Germany and skating is kinda niche in here. So im even more excited about all content xD
Nice vid! Try not to burn yourself out like you did in the past with daily videos! Wish I could get back to skating myself, but recovering from a pretty major injury. Thanks for helping pass even just a bit of time.
I love you john, youre my favorite youtube skater and have been for the past 5 years, love the fact that youre still posting just sad to hear youre retiring soon, it was going to happen eventually so couldnt say I didnt see it coming, but at the same time I couldnt have guessed it wouldve been so soon, im going to enjoy every upload as much as possible as after this year ill only be able to look back at your legacy🙏🏽
I really like watching the skating in the olympics.. I like all those good things you said about it, but to me it's also cool that it's part of the olympics and is getting that kind of mainstream recognition. I think the skaters competing are VERY talented despite their young age, so that doesn't detract from it IMHO.
I didn’t see any noobs hating on skating in my feeds. Should I though, I’d keep it casual and say, “no one will tell you this BUT it’s actually pretty easy. That’s why 12 year olds are doing it.Go get a board from Walmart and skate the first rail or stair set you see. Trust me”
Love to see vlogs comming back from you! Loved to watch them back in the day and loved your vibe. Keep the videos up, if the baby time alows it. But most importantly progress daily 🤗
I just think it's weird there's no downhill or slalom in olympics. Like, the 2 categories that non-skateboarders can absolutely understand without any prior knowledge.
The Olympics are actually great to gather more support for the sport. Because it is now a "legitimate" sport, countries might actually invert more money into it and build parks and other spaces where people can go skate and can safely get into skating. it also makes skating more known to people who would normally not come into contact with it and thus more people might start skating. this is all that matters. it really doesnt matter if olympia represents the culture or whatever.
can't really blame comp skaters for being comp skater. they're comp skaters lol... it's going to be interesting in the future, because that mainstream culture could clash with the counterculture. foam pit kids with dreams of representing and winning gold for their country against PissDrunk Potheads just off a mushroom trip lol! i'm rooting for the one that looks like they had to mark 30 days on the calendar before comp. idc where they're from
Jon, I love what you’re doing! I’ve been challenging myself to draw as well. I’m trying to produce one drawing a day and I’m 30 days in. I know you said you’re doing two today for 100 days. I wish I had the time to do that, but I am meeting you halfway! I love these Vlogs already. You and Garret are my new favorite channels; not news since you guys were always top 5 anyways.
I personally really like watching competition skating. Probably because it seems so different from what I've personally experienced with skating. I can only imagine how cool it must feel to compete at such a high level. 😆
Just don't watch TV. Go outside. I don't care if ppl skate or not. Go outside. Go fishing outside. My son Ollie's first word was "outside". I don't pressure him to skate, we do lots of fishing and time with him so precious, just glad to be OUTSIDE and have loved ones to share that fleeting time.
I like skate vids and skater's vlogs. I don't watch and pay attention to skating just to watch the same three or four guys place each time. Skating is about battling spots with your homies there
Yeah I get it, I am 54 and thought skateboarding was so easy was like why can’t these dudes land anything! Until I started to learn to skate started at 53 and a year later still trying to land an Ollie consistently let alone trying to land it while moving, you really don’t get it until you try it yourself!
That's a very slippery slope. I think there's enough space for everyone to do whatever they want with it. What is the implication is that skateboarding is an anti sport then as soon as you start becoming organized, like with something such as a "skatepark" you begin to 'skate' down that organized sports road... Heck you see a lot less of the streets and downtowns waxed and skated now that there are so many organized areas for people to 'practice' at. But just because some people want to go out and do it as a competition with scoring and judges doesn't stop others from going out and disorganized skating....
You’re a smoker . I’m proud of everyone who’s doing their thing . People hate influencers way more than. You leech on our culture . Yuto, Laesah and Nyjah give their blood sweat and tears
At the end of the day its a board with wheels. And it can be anything you want it to be. Anything from olympics to culture or expression or just as a means of transportation or a fasion accessory. For me its no different than people golfing or bowling
i think street is weird to have at the olympics....even street league contests are kinda weird..vert skating though i think would fit the olympics vert has more or less always been about contests, pro's are super consistent, its cool to watch especially to just average people that don't skate vert has alot of altitude and velocity. anyway just my two cents
Mr hill, I’m the opposite, I need, I’m fact have to stay busy, as soon as I have nothing to do, my anxiety goes crazy, I’ve read that a lot of people have the same thing, but I plan to stay busy as long as I breath 😃
I think it has more to do with how the skateboard Olympic events are set up, rather than the act of skateboard competition itself, because the X-Games aren't really an issue.
The problem with skateboarding in the olympics is very visible when you compare street and park comps. The park comps are fun to watch, similar to a snowboard halfpipe comp. But the street comp is just too much getting on and off the board, too much focus on the best trick, it's just not engaging for someone that doesn't religiously follow it...
What ruined it for me was i couldnt get a viewing experience. It was inbetween ads and swimming etc... I'll just watch it when they eventually release the replays. It was a waste of time trying to watch it on TV. The time zone difference does make a difference though..
It would've been cool if they had each team go do video parts in the city of Paris. Then they could judge the video parts and get some great footage of Paris and skating in general. Get some Olympic approved camera men to film behind the scenes and make sure there is no cheating. Would've been great to see. Kind of like a light weight version of King of the Road.
They’re INDIVIDUAL competitions. No one competes as a team. You want the Olympics to have a video editing contest? The Olympics? What are you talking about?
back in the 60s and 70s skateboarding was a major thing, and competitions were broadcast live, all the olympics did was take it back to that era, just with a lot of hollow generic rubbish, mainly whatever tricks nyjah does for the millionth time
I do not mind Olympic Skateboarding I just hate the way a few countries mainly USA and Germany are picking in USA Nike only sponsored athletes no other sponsor unless a USA Olympic sponsor and in Germany they played favorites for the Adidas athletes at least this go around and 2020 when the USA seemed to have coach bail before the event but then Corona Virus did not help despite most countries being 80% back to normal. I know in past at the X--Games these Skaters some have had a trainer/coach for the really good guys who can afford such a person or companies team has such a person who you see they are consulting.
I think what skaters today might not get is that from it's early days, there's always been competitions in skateboarding. Not only that but skaters were on teams. For a long time, competition was everything to skateboarding. But yes, it's kinda boring compared to contests of yore. If you dig it, fine, if you don't I can see why..
ya I'm excited it's in the Olympics, and it's still represents the rule lessness of skateboardings heart even in the olympics. helmets still being optional and there being no age rules. a 12 year old can be up against a 35 year old. unlike other sports. it's very free even in the olympics I thought. and my dad used to give me hell saying skateboarding isn't a sport when I was in my teens and ive skated now for 30 years. when it got in the olympics I was like ya it's not a sport huh? now he considers it one. 😅
I really wish DIME wouldve been in charge of the competition for the Olympics. 100x more interesting to people that dont skate Check the DIME Glory 2018 challenge for reference
The video of the person complaining popped up earlier an that was really annoying to hear. First time I ever fakie 180 kick flip to 50/50 varial kick flip out an road away...didn't just happen over night.
The reason you have never seen the Zelda design is because Nintendo is notorious for suing anyone that uses their copyright in even the slightest way. I'd heavily advise against selling that as merch if you don't want them to send their lawyers after you.
I’m 30 and just started skateboarding yesterday. Got a legit board and started cruising. I love it! you are awesome sir :) i wish you luck on your journey

Eh, whatever. I don't care what others say or think. I'm going to watch Olympic skateboarding and enjoy it.
facts
Definitely
Big time! Street was DOPE! Cant wait for park.
of course you are.
Same resposne for me with cannabis 😅😆
Ngl the 12 year old had me thinking about quitting fr, I landed my first Ollie off a 4 stair the year that kid was born.

Agree with you, and we need Olympic S.K.A.T.E. games!
I prefer street as that's what I have always done. But if I am being honest, both park and vert are probably better for the "normal" people viewing audience.
Correct. VERT needs to freakin enter these games !!!
THIS is where the true show is 👍
vert is more boring in my opinion because for me its not gonna motivate/captivate how i like to skate. Things that motivate me are gonna be things that are possible. Finding a vert ramp or anything like that in nz is hard to do so I would say street is trillion times better then vert.
i dont watch it because theres no bowls
Running is in the olympics. Infact it's an og of the "games".
Some people run for fitness...
Some join running groups to be social doing a physical activity.
Some people run because it clears their head, makes them feel good and give them mental well being.
And some people run because they are good at it and can do well.

i run because i hate myself

crazy how far you've progressed as a person
But it’s a huge part of the creativity that makes some skaters call skateboarding “art.”
Contest skating has always been a part of skateboarding, though. Street skaters can act like it’s a less pure version of skateboarding sometimes, but a lot of it predates modern street skating. Dude, that handstand push up was sick
Should say, Why SOME people hate....because sadly some just hate on so many things that dont affect them or that they simply dont understand
I think some of the issue with the "non-skater" perspective comes down to the format as well BUT i do not want to see it changed. Been moving the vlogs. Been watching for almost 6 years. Stopped for a bit but I loved that last video, keep it up
Please keep doing these, you seem stoked and I’m here for it!

The “dangerous to go alone” design is 🔥!
VLOG 2 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
For handstand pushups, try to bring your elbows to the front (where you came from) and not the side - the latter is stressful for the shoulder joints.
I like this style of video for you.
vlog 2 had so much old john hill nostalgia in it! loveed it
I’m waiting for Uganda to compete those guys are fearless and have a bag of tricks , I enjoy every skate league
And the rollerbladers too, big respect for them
Anxiety is tough but you need to be more gentle towards yourself. Your doing great❤
Love the Vlogs, but anything you do is amazing lol, Keep Killin IT!
Dude heck ya! I've been trying out handstand push-ups to and they are challenging! Keep it up!
12:25 oh Fuck yea. I know that’s your signature font, but i would recommend, something, Sharper, for the font? Harder edges maybe

It’s cool to see you doing Parkour. I hope to see you getting into Martial arts tricking at some point.
Jon, I love what you’re doing! I’ve been challenging myself to draw as well. I’m trying to produce one drawing a day and I’m 30 days in. I know you said you’re doing two today for 100 days. Do not let GiftedHater see this
for handstand pushups try lookin straight ahead… capoeira trick 😉
Your climb us is looking lovely John! Keep at it!
I personally really like watching competition skating. Probably because it seems so different from what I've personally experienced with skating. I can only imagine how cool it must feel to compete at such a high level. 😆

At the end of the day its a board with wheels. And it can be anything you want it to be. Anything from olympics to culture or expression or just as a means of transportation or a fasion accessory. For me its no different than people golfing or bowling
May seem crazy, but talking to a therapist about some of the existential dread your feeling helps a ton.
Peterson museum is awesome
Loving the vlogs!
I love olympic skateboarding!!!
i think street is weird to have at the olympics....even street league contests are kinda weird..vert skating though i think would fit the olympics vert has more or less always been about contests, pro's are super consistent, its cool to watch especially to just average people that don't skate vert has alot of altitude and velocity. anyway just my two cents
2 to make it true, let's go!
Careful with your shoulders, doing handstand push ups everyday. That will be very taxing - personal trainer
More exposure does not hurt imo. If olympics helps skate get more popular, skateparks will get fundings easier and skate shops will sell more items
4:08 Karen just mad that there’s no casserole competition in the Olympics
The time zone difference does make a difference though..
have full momentum during the pull up because if you hang its harder
but the hang does make you stronger so it'll make it easier once you try it all in one motion
❤ Sketching is life!
How do you start learning flips? Also, do you go to a regular gym or just do stuff outside?
Facts! It about the deep purpose
I wasn’t even aware there was hate towards it lol
I only watch the olympics for the skateboarding and went off to buy a new board. :D
Lets goo new vlog
Rooftop footage. Storror boys would be proud.
keep at it man vlog 2
back in the 60s and 70s skateboarding was a major thing, and competitions were broadcast live, all the olympics did was take it back to that era, just with a lot of hollow generic rubbish, mainly whatever tricks nyjah does for the millionth time
I do not mind Olympic Skateboarding I just hate the way a few countries mainly USA and Germany are picking in USA Nike only sponsored athletes no other sponsor unless a USA Olympic sponsor and in Germany they played favorites for the Adidas athletes at least this go around and 2020 when the USA seemed to have coach bail before the event but then Corona Virus did not help despite most countries being 80% back to normal.
How can you edit so fast? Id would be nice if you make a video about your workflow!
ya I'm excited it's in the Olympics, and it's still represents the rule lessness of skateboardings heart even in the olympics. helmets still being optional and there being no age rules. a 12 year old can be up against a 35 year old. unlike other sports. it's very free even in the olympics I thought. and my dad used to give me hell saying skateboarding isn't a sport when I was in my teens and ive skated now for 30 years. when it got in the olympics I was like ya it's not a sport huh? now he considers it one. 😅
Hell yeah J- Dawgg 🤘🏼
I really wish DIME wouldve been in charge of the competition for the Olympics.
100x more interesting to people that dont skate
Check the DIME Glory 2018 challenge for reference
dude goated vlog
Thank you for uploading!
Nah I'll watch the Olympics when they can tell the difference between a nose grind and overcrook. 🤣🤣🤣
Very inspiring! I really wish to vlog again but I don't have a decent camera... 😂
I wanted skateboarding in the Olympics in the beginning. Then I felt like they was trying to make money of skateboarding I didn't want it.
