    Wow, that's genius.... usually people cut a hole in the side and connect tunnel which doesnt equal to floorspace. And sometimes bins in stores aint big enough. So this is amazing!!! You can connect however many bins for it to be as big as you want. Than you for this sir anazing tutorial

    I’d like some opinions. I have a project in mind for my local shelter. They have an older building and not many supplies and they keep their younger kittens in large dog carriers. They don’t adopt out their animals until they are fixed so the kittens have to stay there or be fostered until they’re at least two pounds. They don’t use the wire crates to keep the those kittens in because More wire means more chances for injury and also the solid sides of the carriers act as a sneeze guard for everyone. That’s all good reasoning and logic but the problem is that the carriers are cumbersome and large, but even though they are large, they do not provide much floor space for the kittens. So it’s a lot of pointless/useless space and weight. Also, those are expensive and the ones they have are very old and the doors are rusty (not safe) and the patches are broken so they have to Jerry rig most of them. So I’m trying to figure out a solution for them that’s cheap, easy to clean/sanitize/least chances of kitten injury/light weight/good use of space/enough floor space for the kittens/etc. I WAS looking at fish tanks but the only ones that would provide enough floor space (I’m wanting at least 20”x30”) are super expensive and you have to buy the lid separate. I stumbled across this bin cage idea today and I think this may be my solution as it checks ALL of my boxes! I’m thinking a clear 200 quart tote Would be a good size. Walmart has one for about $25 that’s 38”x20” (which is way more room than those carriers provide). I don’t want to put a door on the sides because they’re supposed to act as sneeze guards so the top is my only option. I’m thinking that two wire grid panels (like the kind the cube and chloroplast guinea pig cages are made out of) would be good in stead of using mesh. There’s a size that’s about 14”x14” with the grid being 9 squares by 9 squares which is plenty small enough for kittens. So I figure I can cut TWO square holes in the lid at 12”x12” each (that way the plastic would over lap the wire grid panels on the under side) and zip tie just one side of the panels to the lid, tight enough to not slid but loose enough to act as a hinge. So then all I would need is a way to easily but securely latch the panels to “close” them on the lid. Remember, this is for a shelter environment with lots of cleaning and stuff going on. What’s everyone’s opinions? Does this sound like a feasible plan for weaned kittens under 8 weeks old? They’re about the size of guinea pigs or less. And constructive criticism? Anyone use bin cages for kittens before? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    • @Steve-op9sd
      @Steve-op9sd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds freaking awesome. Easy cleanup and fast installation. My only concern is how flimsy the plastic might be. Other than that it seems like a solid plan!!! Please give us updates :D

    • @xradelox
      @xradelox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks :) I haven’t been able to try it yet. I mentioned the idea to the director at the shelter and he seemed to like the smaller rolling ferret cages for them better. I found one second hand and used one of those C and C grid panels to add a large middle shelf. The staff and director loved it so much that he order a new one off Amazon so we can have two! They’re much smaller than the typical three tier cat cages but it’s the same layout. The smaller size is better for those young kitten so they won’t get hurt as easily. I still want to try out the bin cage idea but it looks like I’m going to have to wait until I can *hopefully* move to a different apartment soon where the landlord will allow me to foster. I’ll get the supplies and make my own bin cages for the kittens and see how they work. Then I can take videos and pictures and show them to the director and have personal experiences with it to tell him about. But in the meantime, I’ve used those C and C grids to add large middle shelves to the seven larger three tier cat cages that they have and the cats and staff LOVE them. It’s amazing how one small change can make such a huge difference. I just zip tied four of those grids along the horizontal bar that’s in between the top and bottom doors. I just leave a gap from the edge of the shelf to the side of the cage that’s large enough for the cats to pass through. I like taking a floor mat or something else that’s soft but stiff that can cover that whole middle shelf and I wrap it in a sheet to keep it cleaner. Then I put a pillow or bed in a pillow case and put it on that shelf. I’ve posted images on my IG account adoptable.fur.babies if anyone wants to see them. You’re welcome to follow me, if I can eventually foster and use the bin cage idea then I’ll be posting updates on there :)

    • @xradelox

      @Kitten Mimi: Thanks! I actually finally got to move a few weeks ago and immediately got my first foster mom! I use that 200 quart bin that I mentioned as the nest and I keep a step on the outside so she can safely jump in and out. Those things really do have tons of room and the plastic is pretty durable if you don’t man handle it. Once this mom and her kittens are taken back to the shelter to be fixed and adopted then I’ll get some weaned kittens that don’t have a mom and try out the bin cage idea with them. I don’t know if this particular shelter will go for it at the actual shelter because they don’t really have a space to place them where they can easily access the top to reach in, but I really believe this will be a great option for foster parents who don’t have a lot of space and want a cage that’s easy to clean and sanitize.

      it could but you will be having a hard time reaching out for the stuffs inside the cage. since the orientation of this is side by side, is is a lot easier for me to arrange stuffs. You also have to consider ergonomics when making your cage, what would be more convenient for you. :)

      It would work for a while, but you would need to check them often. Hamsters are rodents and love to chew on stuff. Plus, most are escape artists. If they find a weak spot in their cage, they will work at it until they have a hole big enough to pass through. You would be surprised to know how little time that would take them.

      Please upgrade to 70 gallons. Hamsters need a lot of space to run around.
