The area below the vents are actually teleporters that only the alien can use to get to above the map and down again. The developers just made them look like vents. Even if the alien sees you when going up it won't get you because it has already teleported away

Working Joe's are the nutshell of technology, there sometimes nice, but most of the time they just wanna fucking kill you right when they see you. I had bad experiences with the working Joe's. Fucking bastards won't leave us alone. Exomorphs on the other hand though are just so cute I think personally. The way they just enter and exit the vent is so smooth.
