Games have taught us that humans have absolutely zero peripheral vision. Also, visual range stops at 15 meters and audition at 5 m (unless scripted otherwise).
This is why this game is amazing. When you play it as it suggests, it punishes you. Play it by hiding in a VERY OBVIOUS PLACE gives the Xeno the big bamboozle. Especially that part in Gemini labs, I've played ring around the boxes so often there tring to save on nightmare that it's not even scary any more.

It still does get you feeling a bit stressed in places but I've played it so much that I don't find it scary most of the time. The exception being when a Xeno without any warning vents right in front of me. THat just qualifies as a jumpscare, lol
Vision works so differently in this game. You can be seen but only get a reaction if you get a certain detection rating which depends on the difficulty mode. And holding your breath damages or kills you like what happened in this video. If the alien gets you in the locker despite leaning back it means you died by holding your breath
Oh, you think of the freezing during loading after death? It loaded after a restart in the story mode, but it made the mode where you can't save impossibile. Fortunately my older PC can run the game in 720p 30 fps and this bug does not occur there, so I made the hardest levels on those.
Honestly, half of the fear effect of the game, is your own fear... o remember a part that i played that i was annoyed by the alien, and start to play exactly like this, without fear of dying and i ended up progressing a lot more faster, but them i start to be more and more careless and start to die a lot more, and i got back by the default of being scared all the time.
I love how the aliens AI is somehow both awful and amazing at the same time
