After a few years of trying to get into this game and many different TH-camr tutorials I can now say this 7 video playlist is the definitive way for newbs to learn the game. Thank you for uploading this series and covering a wide aspect of knowledge many others haven’t!
I absolutely love this game, and I gotta give credit to your old helper videos to get me into the rhythm of things. As for nowadays, I still put on some of your CoQ playlists for sleep or background noise. Your calm demeanor is a massive draw for me and I'm sure plenty others and I just wanted to give some props :)
My main tip for the early game (which also remains mostly true and useful for the rest of it) is to never fight fair. Be a coward, never fight something you haven’t seen before unless you’re 1 on 1. If you take a big hit from something (1/3 of your health), that’s a sign you should probably not fight this thing yet, and should run. Getting surrounded is the quickest way to die, never let yourself get surrounded by anything that you can’t kill in 1 shot. So if you start to get surrounded, back off, and kite the enemies somewhere you can bottle neck them (a 1 tile wide hallway is ideal). Area control is an important concept to consider. An area you have cleared will remain clear, generally enemies only transition between screens when chasing you. This means that as you clear a structure or a cave level, you want to establish a safe area by clearing the enemies, and push out from that area in a controlled way. This way you are in control of the directions you will be attacked from, and can prevent yourself from being attacked from all directions at once. If you end up in trouble, retreat along your safe path, DO NOT RUN AWAY INTO UNEXPLORED TERRITORY. You might be able to lose the aggro quicker or find a choke point but you can easily run into more trouble or a dead end and death. Finally, never fighting fair also means knowing when to abandon the place you’re exploring. If a big scary enemy is blocking your progress to the next floor, don’t fixate on killing it. If it’s dangerous enough to make you sweat, just leave, and come back with another level or two, or better gear. A very easy way to die is not running away when something is putting up a fair fight. In Qud, you don’t want to be taking a fair fight, that is way too deadly for someone who wants to survive. You want your fights to be as quick and brutal as possible, then you retreat to refill resources and cooldowns. As you level up and get better gear, you’ll continue to gain more enemies that you can easily overpower. There’s a clear inflection point quite early on where snapjaws stop being any threat to you, with them struggling to deal any damage, and your blows taking them out instantly. This means you can recategorize them in your head from threats to obstacles. As you continue to grow, more and more enemies will make that transition. Playing Qud is being aware of what enemies you can take on at any given time. This doesn’t need to be any sort of hard and fast rule, qud tends to be pretty “fair” as far as one shot kills on the player. If you are sticking to the areas appropriate for your level, it’s unlikely a new enemy will kill you immediately. They might chunk you for 50% of your health but that’s just a sign to run. Make a note of that enemy and try to avoid any encounters with that sort of enemy until you have more in your favor (or maybe some resources like grenades).
I have been having quite a bit of trouble surviving the early game, BUT that’s because I’m a bonehead: I’m determined to succeed with an Esper Pilgrim that de-emphasizes Agility and doesn’t have any of the mental mutations you highlighted as being more helpful at the beginning of your video. Good luck, me!
I feel like I need a 'transition from early to mid game' tutorial myself. I have real trouble getting killed by a small mistake when there is a difficultly jump, and I end up doing the first parts of the game again and again.
I agree 100% buddy. I feel like, how to prep for Golgotha and Bethesda are my biggest wall personally. Not sure what you consider the mid game, but to me it starts there.
@@redman0027 i was thinking golgotha, but of course i dont really know. Seems like a jump in difficulty, enemy types, and gear, so i figured it was mid game. Im currently trying to get the hang of the jungle first.
Honestly try roleplay mode, I know people say it will give you lupus and makes you gonads shrivel but I'm learning a lot and it beats seeing the same 4-5 places ad nauseam.
@@Rogue_Rat thank you! Also, I been really loving your content and tutorials on coq. You’re one of the main reasons I bought this game and I’ve been loving it since. Keep it up!
It's funny how every single time I watch a video like this the community always include the sentence "we'll make Joppa start just for the sake of this video..." As if it is something to be ashamed of hahaha It's the default 😆
@@TheLaiKash Joppa start is best start! No need to be ashamed :) the only reason to not take it later on is to avoid the weirdwire counduit quest, which I’ve done to death at this point
@Rogue_Rat absolutely! The difference between newbies and experienced players like you is that you're rid of the normal start, it's pointless to repeat it. Great video! I hope you continue the series in this short format
I cover all that in my beginners guide! This is specifically for the early game rather than game mechanics :) You heal up by waiting, or using witchwood/salve/urberries
heh, i dont need this, i have hundreds of hours! *proceeds to die to salthopper*
lmao you and me both brother

Amazing info! I've learned everything I know about the game from you and the wiki. You've made the game much more fun for me
Thank you so much, and I hope you're smashing chrome pyramids by now!
ty for the tips! books are the best trade good in the game next to the hand-e-nuke tbh

go teleport + light manip and max TOU + EGO and you can snipe everything
Been loving your content man! Convinced me to get CoQ when I was hesitant, but I love the game and all your videos on it!
That's great to hear! hope you're having fun!
Incredible timing, ridiculous really. I beat the notification even. Though I will say, the best way to win Qud is watch your playthroughs!

I love this game, only a few hours in, went with the prebuilt psionic/melee build, it's pretty fun blasting fire at everything.
I like fart turtle, farting and intoxicating my foes to infinity and beyond. 😂
Btw you can read books in Joppa chests. I wonder if game asks you about stealing if you do anything but read a book in other's chests

Yeah I've been thinking about making a Bethesda Susa guide recently, as well as what to do in that weird gap between Golgotha and Besthesda.

that's crazy that you call it a full stop. helpful video tho!
How do you get this "sunset" effect in dunes? That's a mod or you can just toggle it in options? Thanks for answer
It’s a mod, take a look in the description :)
Dude...I've almost given up in this game cause I'm tired of dying I. The early game. Great tips

We need more of these tutorials 😊
Good video
Does flaming ray always burnt loot?
No, it only destroys the corpse - the loot is fine, unless you choose to set it on fire after it drops
