  • Today on Buckle Up, Jasper reviews the 2024 Peugeot 508 SW Plug-In Hybrid. The stylish French station wagon has taken aim at its more premium German rivals like the BMW 3 Series Touring, Mercedes Benz C Class Estate and Audi A4 Avant while still offering the sort of value you would expect from a Volkswagen Passat or Ford Mondeo.
Has it succeeded in punching above its weight (and moving on from Peugeot's poor image) or has it become confused by trying to straddle so many market segments at once? Watch on to find out.

Our fiscal system is totally screwed up when quotes of 200 mpg + translate to 40 mpg in the “real world” … (whatever that may be). These hybrid vehicles USP is to exploit tax breaks, which is both sad and frustrating, when Peugeot now produce some great cars.

If you charge them you do get good economy though, it's just that lots of company car owners don't bother charging them

I wish Peugeot wasn't going for the plug in hybrid. It doesn't do many klms before you have to charge it up. One that charges itself would've been the way to go.

You realise that once a plug in hybrids battery reaches a certain level (they never go truly flat) it just acts like a self charging hybrid right?

45 50 mpg, so it's worse than my 508sw 2lt diesel, absalutley shocking

In the real world on longer journeys a diesel engine like you mention will always outperform a turbo-petrol PHEV in terms of economy. Doesn't mean the powertrain isn't a valid option though.

We've demonstrated a few big hybrid cars now looking at replacing our 508sw 2lt diesel, what all these review videos fail to do is show you real world reviews and conclusions, put 8 bags of shopping in the boot, family of four, go for a day out 100 miles each way, etc etc, all these small engined hybrid big cars fall way short in real world, just facts

I'd argue that a 1.6 Turbo petrol isn't a small engine by today's 1.0 triple petrol standards. This model is no longer available with a diesel engine, as is often the running theme with more and more new cars. A day out in mixed driving circumstances of 100 miles in either direction, depending on the style of driving and traffic conditions may still see a fuel economy figure that allows the total cost to be comparable with a diesel, if you factor in the price difference between the fuel types.

    I wouldn't touch a Peugeot with a barge pole!

Well you're missing out then, they make rather good cars now
